Open Mouth, Insert Foot

From 620 WDAE

In an effort to try and create even more atmosphere at the St. Pete Times Forum, and maybe to try and trump the sea of red at Calgary's Saddledome, the Lightning announced on Wednesday that Game 5 will be a "White Out" at the Forum. Every fan attending the game will receive a "White Out" T-shirt compliments of Bright House Networks.

All right, I admit it - I've stuck my foot in my mouth and of course Keith is already giving me shit with regards to this.

You see, a couple of weeks ago for all you non-regular readers, Keith had brought up the un-originality of the "Orange Crush" that Philadelphia employed during games at the Wachovia Center.

I went along with it, in fact I ridiculed Philly pretty bad for lack of support of the Orange Crush concept and how the team had to give out shirts.

Now the Lightning are doing it -- which is imitating countless franchises before us that have imitated Calgary's "C of Red". That's pretty sad. :mad I apologize for criticizing Philly - as we have now sunk to your level :-p ;-)

I was talking about this dumbass concept w/ people at work yesterday morning. They thought Calgary was copying from Philly (foolish mortals) when they saw the C of Red in highlight footage. Needless to say, not a whole lot of hockey fans there at the plant.

Is it completely gay? Yes. Did you see it coming a mile away? Yes. Is there any way to make it less gay? Yes: the “Black Out” where black tshirts are handed out to match the home (nee road) black jerseys. Afterthought: why don’t the Bolts have a lightning-generating machine in the scoreboard? Imagine the promotional weight behind that one: “Get struck, free beer all game!” Oh, yeah, right…

Then again, black tshirts in Tampa… in June… probably isn’t a good idea with the higher concentration of potential stroke victims.

P.S. Never apologize for criticizing Philly fans. They’re all tools anyway (well, with a few expatriated exceptions). :)

Screw the white t-shirt. I’ll be kickin’ it way old school in my white (former home) jersey emblazoned LECAVALIER 8. Who wears a plain white shirt to a hockey game, anyway? Except for the wife-beater tanks, of course… those are just plain cool.

When I saw this on the news last night, I thought of your previous post – that I agree with, by the way… It’s amazing that we/they can’t come up with something original, you know like throw an octopu… uh, no. We need something that says “Tampa.” How about everyone bring their own stripper to the game…?
