Unprecedented

I scanned through the local rags this morning and hadn't seen anything that captivated me to post in here....

I stumbled onto SunSportstv's message forums and the natives were getting anxious over something Cousin Larry Brooks muttered this morning... Yet it's Kuklas Korner who had the fortitude enough to include the major meat of the rumor that Brooks was reporting...

A 10 year deal?!?!

Every year I look at the FA signings and I am confused why the NHL signs players to such short contracts... 3-5 year deals are the norm when it comes to "long term" contracts. I can understand a bit that with guaranteed money, you don't want to invest in a player too long or you may get screwed if he goes bust....

A $20.5 million dollar, 3-year deal is also on the table and was at the forefront of the report by Cousin Larry... Which seems to drop the entirety of the "home town discount" talk Kent Hughes was throwing out.

Edit: Thanks to Lyle Richardson of Spectors's Hockey for reminding me of the last lump-sum contracts that were unprecedented and foolish at the same time: Jaromir Jagr and Alexi Yashin.

Two examples of the folly of contract terms beyond five years in length are Alexei Yashin and Jaromir Jagr. The Caps at least managed to dump half of Jagr’s salary, but the Isles are stuck with Yashin because of that ridiculously high salary. It wasn’t even worth their while to buy him out.

You knew one or both of these guys (St. Louis or Lecavalier) were going to ask for close to the max. The team won’t turn both of them down, and since Lecavalier seems to be a little more cooperative at the negotiating table, it looks more like he is going to be the big winner.

Well, that and of the two, Lecavalier is worth it.
