Maybe not but still, it may not take long to jump start Vinny and Alex. I honestly think that a goal or two between them and they’ll stop gripping the stick so hard and relax a bit.

what we have to wonder about is
Mark parrish in Norfolk. Or perhaps Dana Tyrell or another forward. The Bolts have got to clear roster space soon if the RW offensive output just isn’t working with who is here.
Downie’s done EVERYTHING asked of him. But the Bolts need a spark…

Downie has surprised a lot of people this season so far. With his ability to keep his cool and he’s playing better. But have to admit he’s not top 6 material, at least not at this point in his career. Somebody’s gotta go somewhere and I’m thinking one of the spare Dmen. They really could get rid of Kraijek (sp?) and we wouldn’t miss him.

They had Marty in the lineup but Downie started the game with VL and Tangs.

I’m getting the Pens broadcast of the game instead of Sunsports. Well, shouldn’t complain though, at least it’s on where I can watch it.

If I can get the radio and video synchronized I’ll do that. I’d rather listen to Mish than these Pit announcers. Don’t really feel like listening to them harp on how good Malkin, Crosby and others are.

Even with that somewhat soft goal, I still feel more confident with Frank in goal as opposed to Smitty.
That’s pretty sad.
Smith should be sent on a conditioning stint. Call up Helenius
Give Mike some starts for the next two weeks. Go with Frank and Riku in goal over the next four games. Mike needs to play and build up confidence.

Not just you. Seems to be the consensus opinion on the blogs I’ve read. folks seem to think he’s got a confidence problem. He’s healthy, just not mentally in the game. That’s a bad situation for a goalie…

I think the fact that Niittymaki came in ready to play really threw him off. I’m not sure he came into the season thinking that he’d have to fight to keep the number one designation. So when Niitty showed that he was more than competent, that probably threw Smitty for a loop.

you think the refs know how badly they have screwed the Lightning in this game? or do you think they even care?
by Tina Robinson on Oct 17, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions
They don't care. They think they are doing their job
and they are justified with any screw-ups because it’s such a TOUGH job. Blah Blah Blah.
They have this sense of superiority, this wreckless entitlement and this dominant arrogance…. “We ARE the law. Do not question us.”

I agree.
There are times I’d love to just slap them silly… They need some sort of way to grade the refs and penalize the bad ones. But then again, they’d be penalizing most of them so I guess that wouldn’t work either. It would mean they had to actually admit that they made a mistake!! god forbid.
by Tina Robinson on Oct 17, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s also a hockey culture thing. Good players are given the benefit of the doubt, while the rest aren’t. And god forbid if you’ve got a reputation for being a troublemaker. And goes with teams, too. Good teams are given the breaks.

sorry, Cassie

by Tina Robinson on Oct 17, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Let’s see. No Goals for Vinny (AGAIN). No goals for Alex (AGAIN). Bad penalties. Bad officiating. Not shooting the puck. Standing around watching the Pens skate out of the zone unmolested. Not skating. Getting beat to the loose pucks. Chasing the puck carrier instead of being proactive…. Um, hang on, I’m sure I can think of a few more….
Oh – I wasn’t talking about the game. I was talking about the team. What’s the fundamental problem? They’ve got a good mix of talent, and enough chemistry to get them by until they sort the rest out. But why aren’t they winning like they had during preseason?

The big picture.
They need to shake the culture of losing that team has right now. That’s following them around like the tail on a dog. “Oh, it’s just the Lightning”. Don’t think you can blame it on the ownership squabbles, that’s been pretty quiet. I’m not sure what the problem is. Unless it’s just that they need Torts back to give them all a kick in the a$$ and make ’em skate til they puke.

I had two thoughts
I thought there is a very obvious hole on the PP that people are seeing in video…
And then the other thing that gives you a “Toldja so” — coaching. It ultimately comes back to coaching when things do not come together.

So can we say Tocchet is not the answer? I mean, he’s had almost a whole year (since he took over 16 games into the season last year). When is the honeymoon over and they start thinking about somebody else? Where is that line in the sand drawn?

His seat isn't even hot
We’re preliminarily grumbling right now. It’s very early. I don’t think Lawton will switch direction mid-season. I could be wrong though.

And I’m not sure you can put it all on the coach either. I mean he can preach to ’em, skate ’em and scream and throw things, but it comes down to the players gotta get it done. Nobody else is gonna bail them out. Or feel sorry for them.
by Tina Robinson on Oct 17, 2009 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Tocchet had 66 games last season to prove himself. Sure, it was a rough season, and personnel were being moved all over the place, but still. There’s a lot more stabilty now, and the players have been upgraded in most positions, but the style of play remains the same. And they’re losing in the exact same manner.

And that comes back to that culture of losing the Lightning have developed over the last 2 years. They got to shake that. If they don’t it won’t matter WHO is on the ice. The game goes the same way.
by Tina Robinson on Oct 17, 2009 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the real problem is that Tocchet (and Walz, and Oates) still thinks like players. They don’t have a coach’s mentality or perspective on the game. They’re still too close – it still means too much to them.

It’s like trying to be your children’s friend. Children have friends, but they need parents. In this case, the players already have teammates, but they need coaches.

Seeing that right now in football locally with the Buccaneers. 32 year old head coach — younger than some of the players. That’s all right and good but young players leadershipp – not friendship. Tough love, not pal-antics.

That coaching mentality does take a while to develop. How often does someone come in with no experience and take a team to the playoffs? Not too often I’d bet.

But the looked pretty good in the pre-season. I’m not sure how it goes south so fast. With the same personnel that looked good earlier. Lazy? I don’t think so. I think it’s getting to be a mental thing with the whole team now.
by Tina Robinson on Oct 17, 2009 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Mental preparation – that starts with the team leadership (Lecavalier, St. Louis, Halpern, Ohlund, etc.), and ends with the coaches.

They’re playing just as distractedly as they were last season. They need to either deal with the distractions, or learn to ignore them. Whatever they may be. And while I like and respect Tocchet, I’m not sure he’s the right coach for this team.

Then is the right coach (whoever that may be) already on the staff? Rick Wilson maybe? or should they look somewhere else?
by Tina Robinson on Oct 17, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions
If that were to happen, which it won’t any time soon, I’d go with Rick Wilson – if they were to promote from within. He’s the only one with any head coaching experience. Not at an NHL level, tho, but at a major junior level. The rest of the coaches are fresh off of NHL careers. I think they’re too close to the game still.

From what I understand, he either doesn’t want to be head coach, or he’s being extremely picky about the job he takes. The fact that he came to Tampa Bay after being in Dallas for so long is interesting. Makes me wonder what his motivation for that was.

Maybe he sees the opportunity for moving up the ladder (coaching, not front office) here as opposed to Dallas. Fresh start in a different organization.
by Tina Robinson on Oct 17, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions
The only NHL coaching experience Rick Wilson has at the head coaching level is 32 games as a mid season replacement in Dallas in 2001-02. Then he went right back to associate coach.
by Tina Robinson on Oct 17, 2009 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, according to Lawton, this team seems to be tighter than last year’s team. That should make dealing with distractions easier, shouldn’t it? Bond together and have that “us against the world” mentality. They need to play with a huge chip on their shoulder and dare someone to knock it off. I just don’t see that attitude with the team right now.
by Tina Robinson on Oct 17, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Whatever it is, they need to get it figured out in a hurry. Not sure the fan base can (or will) put up with another season like last year. You have to admit the game were hard to watch last season. Not too many bright spots.
If they don’t figure things out sooner rather than later, we’ll be looking at another Phoenix. Literally. The fact is, most of an NHL team’s revenue comes from the gate. And no one wants to go see a losing team. As shown by the Coyotes not making playoffs for six years straight.

Purchase the team in full than Basille getting a shot. Koules and Barrie both want the Lightning, and they’ve talked big money men into exploring things.

And it's quiet on the ownership front.
That usually means something’s afoot in the background. From what I understand, Greene has already applied to be an owner, or whatever the heck it is they do. The NHL is doing their “due diligence” (whatever the heck that is) and checking him good. Never heard any confirmation that Sansone had even applied. Haven’t heard much about him after that initial article or 2 saying Barrie was trying to recruit him.
