That Bettman is scheduled to update the Tampa Bay media on the Lightning ownership situation. The “Window” period closes on November 23rd — if it still exists at all.

Okay. The Lightning are being outshot 11-8. Of course. Four different players each have two hits each. Faceoffs are miserable, tho. Konopka’s 1-3 (25%), and Stamkos is 1-5 (17%). Lecavalier has won half of his faceoffs, and has two shots on goal – not to mention two blocked shots. And Meszaros has the only giveaway.
Still 2-1 Lightning, tho, after one.

thats a bit topys turvy. I woudl have expected 2 goals for Malone and an assist for Vinny and Tanguay.
As a question, how many assists does Malone have this year? He seems to me to be the one that is shooting the puck the most for Tampa Bay.
Before this game? Five assists – to go with his 12 goals on the season. It’s because he’s willing to camp out in front of the net and get garbage goals. Not a lot of guys will do that anymore.
Raw Charge, an SBN Tampa Bay Lightning Blog. Calling shotgun in the clown car.
by Cassie McClellan on Nov 16, 2009 10:03 PM EST up reply actions
Any reason why? Camping’s a valid tactic (ok gamers may get that joke) and if you are a professional I would expect palyers to be willing and able play most aspect/positions of the game.
You take a lot of physical abuse when you camp out in front of the net. The goalie is hacking on your ankles, calves, and backs of your knees while the defensemen are trying to not get caught cross checking you. It takes a pretty special person to just take it and not start throwing punches.

No. He did put his forearm right in St. Louis’ chest but I’m not sure what the alternative is. If he leads with the shoulder it’s a head shot and I heard the NHL doesn’t want that.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
didn't watch the replay
on first look the forearm/elbow looked to hit st. louis up high near the head.

Personally, I prefer to show up unexpectedly rather than lurk. I’d have been here sooner but, y’know, sushi. Can’t turn down sushi. Except if you’re in Phoenix. You might want to avoid sushi in Phoenix.

We passed a new sushi place with having its grand opening on the way home. It’s literally the 5th or 6th place on this 5-block strip, and at least two more are hidden a few blocks east.
But tasty and cheap. 12 pieces of tuna roll, 6 of salmon, 6 of cucumber (so 4 rolls total), and miso soup: $9. Canadian.

I’ve found him to be a turnover machine. I’m not convinced he and Ohlund are a great pair on the ice. As a teacher, Matti’s probably great. I’ve not been too impressed with his play.

Raw Charge, an SBN Tampa Bay Lightning Blog. Calling shotgun in the clown car.
by Cassie McClellan on Nov 16, 2009 10:29 PM EST up reply actions
He seems to cut into Ohlund’s position a lot. Suddenly there’s two defencemen going the same way on the rush, a turnover occurs, and there’s nobody where Hedman should be. Boom, instant scoring chance.

Most of the time, yeah. He gets a ton of ice time – he averages 24 minutes a night. He has his rookie moments, of course, but they’re few and far between. He did play two years professionally with the big boys in the Swedish Elite League, tho. So he’s not exactly your average rookie.
Raw Charge, an SBN Tampa Bay Lightning Blog. Calling shotgun in the clown car.
by Cassie McClellan on Nov 16, 2009 10:28 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah definitely. I think the SEL boys are somehow underrated at draft time. It should say a lot more that you are playing in the SEL than doing well in the CHL.

The SEL does have its junior league. But Hedman was playing with the top club. He didn’t play junior hockey – at all.

Right. It’ll be interesting to see how the last couple drafts play out with all the SEL players picked.

Which also means the Swedish WJC team is at least half from the SEL, which is pretty ridiculous.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
True, but NHL players are still eligible until they’re 20. Luke Schenn’s played about 100 NHL games and he could, in theory, play in the World Juniors. The difference is that SEL teams tend to let their players go to the WJC, and NHL teams don’t.
But yes, Hedman and Karlsson (who were a pair, incidentally) were both SEL top tier pros while at the WJC last year.
ryanclassic.net
by Ryan Classic on Nov 16, 2009 10:39 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah. Nobody leaves the NHL to go play but the guys from basically every other league get to. Canada is deep enough as is so I don’t think they need to worry.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
They still take a lot of time to adjust to smaller ice and more physical play. I’ve seen Hedman get rocked pretty hard more than a few times. Erik Karlsson in Ottawa also came over after two years of SEL-2 junior experience and a full year in the SEL, and now he’s in the AHL. It takes time.
It’s too bad that Tampa has so few defencemen that they’re forced to play Hedman all the… oh wait. Nevermind.
ryanclassic.net
by Ryan Classic on Nov 16, 2009 10:35 PM EST up reply actions
Right, but I’m talking specifically about guys that played in the SEL-1 for their draft year. If you are 17-18 and playing with professional men that is more impressive than putting up points in the CHL to me. You know they aren’t producing because they are physically more mature.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Fair enough. Almost all draftees from the SEL-1 end up playing another year in Europe before coming over, too. Hedman’s an obvious exception.
Meanwhile Robin Lehner is playing goal in the OHL for the Soo straight out of his draft year rather than staying in Sweden trying to crack Frolunda SEL-1.
ryanclassic.net
by Ryan Classic on Nov 16, 2009 10:42 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah Nick Backstrom stayed another year and turned out ok. This last draft the Caps drafted Marcus Johansson from the SEL and he’s playing another year there too.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
And that doesn’t make much sense about the goalie. Who owns his rights?

I guess so. I don’t know what Frolunda’s goaltender depth chart was like, but he seemed pretty intent on learning the North American game. Sounds like he has really good English. He was also coached in Sweden by Henrik Lundqvist’s dad (if I’m remembering it right), so maybe there’s a push for him to go to North America now if he really wants to play in the NHL.

To strive, to seek, to find, and to forever keep it Raw. Raw Charge.
Alrighty then. After two periods, it’s 3-1 Lightning – the only numbers that really count. Lecavalier, Tanguay, and St. Louis have the goals, while Malone assisted on the first two.
The Lightning are being outshot 24-11, and Lecavalier has three of those shots. Faceoffs are still bad overall, with the team having won only 36%. Stamkos is 1-8 (11%). Although, both Szczechura (2-1) and Wright (4-2) have each won 67% of their faceoffs. Veilleux and Meszaros both have three hits each. Lecavalier and Malone each have two blocked shots.

All I know for sure is they are hanging smith out to dry with how they performed last period — allowing as many shot sas they did. Smith finishes poorly and if they allow another high total of shots through the 3rd… Well, they’re snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

With how Smith’s been playing, they put the game at risk by giving him a ton of shots to face. Last month and earlier this month the game would be in doubt
The win matters, 2 points matters, but that’s one area they have to improve on – get the puck out of the zone and not let the goalie hang out to dry.
