Raw Charge Presents: Nickname That Player!

[Note by John Fontana, 03/05/10 5:21 PM EST ] late in the season but re-opened just for fun.  --JPF

The headline pretty much speaks for itself. During game threads we've bandied around nicknames for various players, but I haven't seen an easy reference guide for readers - particularly the quiet lurkers - of player nicknames. That's why I'm starting this. What nicknames do you have for Lightning players? Add your own in the comments below let's get this guide going.

We have so far:

Let the naming begin.

Players currently without nicknames: David HaleLukas Krajicek, Mike Lundin, Matt Smaby

Maybe not the best for Ashton, but when he is promoted...

“Get Carter”. One of my favorite Stallone films. Everytime he scores post “Get Carter”

I’ve also posted N.V.P for Niitty. Vorants. Pucks.

I leave this one for the great judges, the masters of Raw Charge, to decide.

Also because I don’t have a jersey number for Ashton. There’s order and all that. Can it be Wednesday yet?

Wait, wait, wait...

Get Carter — you associate as a STALLONE movie? Sorry, don’t mean to come off uber-critical, but the film was a remake of a Michael Caine movie from the 70’s and by all accounts, far superior than the remake.

But I digress. I personally think of Carter by what Cassie described him as durign the pre-season (which would never work as a nickname): Lollipop boy :-p

After you had left the thread on Sunday to catch the ferry....

in addition to christening “Killer” I also have dubbed Zenon Konopka “Zeke” (like saying Z-K together…)

My longstanding nickname for Martin St Louis (besides the ever present “Marty” and “MSL”) is “Mighty Mite”.

Jeff Halpern is “Halpy” or as I seem to remember in an article last season about nicknames and locker room names that he also has 2 that I do not understand but will go with them anyhow… “Bob” and “pigpen”… (I’m afraid to ask)

Alex Tanguay is “Tangs”

by Tina Robinson on Nov 24, 2009 11:23 AM EST reply actions

Added!

by Ryan Classic on Nov 24, 2009 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

Tanguay is also nicknamed Tangers

To add another one – Stamkos is usually referred to by the fans as Stammer (but really, the -er or -y ending nicknames are just a little too plain). Some of us (me, and fans) still use the “Seen” moniker when he scores. So Seen Stamkos….

Paul Szczchura is nicknamed “Chewie”. Downie has been reffered to in the press as “Downs” or “Downer”. I don’t think that does him a lick of justice though.

And added. Also included Fozzie Bear. I like that one.

Victor Hedman

Den Yxa: Swedish for “The Axe”

by Danny180 on Nov 25, 2009 11:17 PM EST reply actions

Judges?

What say you to:

Fedoruk: T-Fed
Hedman: Den Yxa/The Axe
Konopka: Dr. K
Meszaros: Mojo

TB_Fan has a different nickname for Fedoruk

I’m not sure what it is. Meszaros has been referred to in short as Mes or Mez…. Ryan, you are an Ottawa fan, did Andrej have a nickname there?

Now that’s a loaded question….

Fedoruk is know as “Fridge”. Saw that online somewhere, so I’m not the only one that refers to him as such. Not sure if that’s an “official” nickname or not.

by Tina Robinson on Nov 27, 2009 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll add Fridge (because I like that one – Dustin Penner is sometimes called The Flying Fridge). Meszaros was usually just Mesz. He had a great rookie year and then regressed, in large part because he played with an even more rapidly regressing Wade Redden. Too bad. Ottawa’s got some fun nicknames, but none for Meszaros.

Personally, I like The Pride of Moose Factory (our local moniker for one Jonathan Cheechoo), A-Train (Volchenkov), or the absolute best: Giggles (Jason Spezza).

My cousin’s last name is Meszaros (took it on when she got married last year) and Meszaros is Hungarian for “the butcher” which I think is one of the best names EVER. It’s just so hardcore.

As for Hedman, well I will never remember Den Yxa (no offense or anything), it’s just so out there.

by Dani Toth on Nov 29, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

Personally I call Hedman my Swedish Stud….but hey….I don’t expect Ryan or John to be doing the same…

by Dani Toth on Nov 29, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

I can’t imagine Andrej doing any butchering. At least Killer took a stick to Kovalev’s head (okay, so he was skating back to the bench and he wasn’t paying attention to his stick and caught Kovalev’s eyebrow, but still). But you could have The Butcher and The Axe as a pairing, and that’s kind of badass.

I’ll add both.

Mesz is a bit "true Grit"

…with the stories of what he has gone through and still played

As for Victor…. Big Vic works for me…

Change it up to the Swedish spelling, Big Vik, and we’ve got a deal, mister.

And the arena is TImes Palace

And I’ve alluded to this twice in the game threads, I have another name/word for Foster but it doesn’t work as a nickname really but it was something I wanted to utter if he scored… It’s reaching.

“Rosebud”

Why? His last name made me think of another Foster — Charles Foster Kane, the lead character of the film “Citizen Kane”.

It’s reaching, I know… The Foster is the only tie in…

by John Fontana on Dec 1, 2009 1:04 PM EST reply actions

Hmm. Rosebud. Foster’s definitely the only tie-in, unless he’s got some childhood toy he’s missing so much. If that would kick him into high gear, let me know what it is and I’ll go find it over Christmas. I think I know the place to check.

For my two cents, I liked Cassie McClellans suggestion of “Odin” for Ohlund. Mostly because it sounds cool.

Also grasping at more straws could suggest:

“Steph” for Stephane Veilleux,
“George” for Lukas Krajicek (as in George Lucas, thinking about it, its probably a bit of a strech).

Hopefully there are some better ideas out there though.

by Sidicus on Dec 1, 2009 7:05 PM EST reply actions

Yeah I like Odin as well. Putting that up as well as changing c to k on Big Vic/k.

I think I need to see Veilleux do something memorable before I can apply anything to his name. Same with Krajicek.

by Ryan Classic on Dec 2, 2009 4:33 AM EST up reply actions

I think Minnesota fans referred to Veilleux as “Red” or “Big Red” (in tribute to his hair color.)

I checked on that one and added Carrot to his list as well. Thanks to WildIowaFan.

Figure it's time to revisit this

Just because some people haven’t caught on to all of the names. And there is new stuff that has come up since we last had open comments here.

Like, my new nickname for Stamkos — Spicolli

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

Guess we need to come up with a nickname for Teddy Purcell now.

Or maybe we need to wait and see if he sticks around first…

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 6, 2010 1:47 PM EST reply actions

There are a few to discuss

Nate Thompson – we never agreed on a nickname. Teddy (waaaaay early to do that but lets kick it around anyway). Lundin? Smaby?

I know what I say when Lundin scores but that’s not a good nickname…

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

What exactly do you say when he scores? Not that he’s done that too often, but still….

We need to ask Ryan to post an updated list. This one’s old. Time to clean it up and try it again!
