Hello? Is there an echo in here or is that just in my head? It’s so hard to tell sometimes.

An injured player starting instead of scratched.

Though blaming the coach for ego doesn’t do any good. But Tocchet should have said “You’re sitting” and rested his star.

Leadership is not worsening an injury

That’s foolishness. Case in point – Mike Smith, 2008-09. “If you’re able to go, you’re going.” only made him worse.

by John Fontana on Dec 11, 2009 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Any player will downplay his/her injury in order to stay in the lineup. You can’t trust athletes to gauge their injuries – I should know because I totally did that, too. Look at the NFL and the players who deliberately choose to not report their concussions for that very reason – because they didn’t want to not play.

So you can shoot the puck well on an injured wrist?

Or is that something to blame Vinny for? Making injured wrists out to be something major?

Stamkos didn’t take shots during warmup. What is Stamkos’ job? Score goals. What is he going to do out on ice besides throw checks?

Gotta see the deal for Smith first if it were to happen

Tokariski is getting the majority of starts in Norfolk, so you gotta assume that’s who the Bolts would recall. Helenius has more experience though. They lack another body to back up in Norfolk this season, the team would have to sign someone to back up the odd-man-out goalie still in norfolk.

by John Fontana on Dec 11, 2009 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

I still don’t completely get why they would trade Smith. He’s not a terrible goal tender, its just Nitty has been playing better this year.

Having said this, has Nitty had any shut-outs this year? I know Smith has.

by Sidicus on Dec 11, 2009 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

Depends on how the trade is structured. They could end up with another backup goaltender. You just never know what they’ll be trading for.

by John Fontana on Dec 11, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

The veterans and the guys wearing letters. If Tocchet is still looking for leaders then maybe he ought to try trusting the ones he’s got instead of trying to undermine them by encouraging others to take their places. Not that I think he has been, necessarily, but that’s the message a player gets in that situation.

Tocchet is looking for clones

“Scrapy, dog the puck guys who go to the puck.”

A team of third liners isn’t about leadership. It’s about Tocchet seeing guys like himself – throwbacks to pre-lockout hockey.

It ain’t the stone age anymore.

by Tina Robinson on Dec 11, 2009 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

Like Wayne Gretzky? or Steve Yzerman?

Don’t exactly fit the “rough and tumble” model…

by Tina Robinson on Dec 11, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree a little

Gretzky was the greatest ever and was obviously the choice for captain Stevie didn’t win until he became that type of player. He played through more severe, brutal injuries than anyone else on those teams.

WB Philp

by LightningShout on Dec 11, 2009 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

Gretzky was a sniper who didn’t hit and couldn’t play defense to save his life. He just hung around the net and potted in the loose pucks that other people worked hard to get to him. Yeah, he made some nice passes, but more often than not he was just hanging around the side of the net – not even out front.

The Great One was a fantastic goal scorer, but did little else – except whine to the referees constantly during any break in play.

by Cassie McClellan on Dec 11, 2009 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

Playing hurt when games matter is leadership. Playing hurt before games matter is dumb. All that does is take guys out of the games that matter.

A real leader picks their spots. Look at Konopka – he’s a natural-born leader. Sure, he fights a lot, but he’s very careful to make sure he doesn’t leave his team shorthanded when he does. But he’s doing what he can with the ability that he has, and he’s fully aware of that.

That doesn’t mean Lecavalier isn’t a leader. He’s a leader in a different way. Sure, he’s no Mark Messier, but he does what he can with the ability that he has – just like Konopka.

Raw Charge, an SBN Tampa Bay Lightning community. Calling shotgun in the clown car.

by Cassie McClellan on Dec 11, 2009 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

Being a leader is realizing that every game counts!

Before games matter? WTF? Please pick out the games on the schedule that don’t matter. I want a refund on those games.

WB Philp

by LightningShout on Dec 11, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

Being a leader means doing anything you can for your team within the abilities that you have.

And not every game counts. Preseason? Games in October and November against the other Conference? Yeah, those don’t carry as much weight as division games in March.

Raw Charge, an SBN Tampa Bay Lightning community. Calling shotgun in the clown car.

by Cassie McClellan on Dec 11, 2009 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

Another weak comeback

What’s the truth? You think third line grinders are the team leaders? Lets trade 14 guys on the Lightning and call up the AHL team because they better fit Tocchet’s model — desperate to stay in the league?

by John Fontana on Dec 11, 2009 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

Tocchets Model

I’m not agreeing to “tocchet’s model” whatever that is…but teams can’t win without that kind of player/leader.

WB Philp

by LightningShout on Dec 11, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yes that kind of player is needed. All the good teams and great teams have/had them. But again, that doesn’t make them a leader either.

by Tina Robinson on Dec 11, 2009 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

There is a whole lot more to it that just “dog the puck” and score goals…. That is important, but that’s just part of it.

Interesting article, John.

About the potential Smith trade. Personally, I believe if Helenius and Tokarski keep developing they way they are in Norfolk, Smith’s days in Tampa are numbered. If he’s not gone at the trade deadline, then possibly over the summer. Don’t think Lawton will want to lose him as a UFA and not get something back.

by Tina Robinson on Dec 11, 2009 9:48 PM EST reply actions

It's an interesting situation regardless

But one thing I did not mention in the piece si that the goalie market is saturated right now. Vokoun is supposedly available, as is Biron, and now Smith, and Legace… And others…

Which is why I would be not so surprised for any trade to take place in the summer. When the market stabilizes (if you can ever consider the goalie market “stable”)

Okay, here’s what we’ve missed. The Lightning are up 1-0. Downie has the only goal, assisted by Lecavalier and St. Louis.

They’ve got the edge in shots 10-8; St. Louis and Szczechura each have two shots. The also have the lead in faceoffs, having won 53%; Wright is 2-0 (100%) while Lecavalier is 4-2 (67%) and Konopka is 2-1 (67%). The Lightning is being out-hit 7-6. Meszaros and Ohlund each have two turnovers.

They haven’t played as much as they usually do…. Not sure how much shooting Stamkos can actually do with that injured wrist. It was the right one. The left one is the one he had jammed several weeks back in practice, so he may be playing double injured….

by Tina Robinson on Dec 11, 2009 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

I know there has been a debate during the first period, and I am not trying to beat that dead horse, but if Stamkos is injured (or double injured) what are they thinking playing him? As many commentators seem to point out; … he’s only 19!

I thought teams would want to develop a future franchise all-star, not a future Forsberg.

Stil 1-0 after two.

Shots are 17-14 Lightning; St. Louis and Szczechura each have three shots. The Lightning just barely have the edge in faceoffs, having won 51% of them; Lecavalier is dominating the faceoff circle winning 75% (9-3). They’re still out-hitting the Avs, now 13-10; Smaby has three hits. The Lightning have actually fewer turnovers than the Avs: 3-6, but one fewer steal as well: 6-7.
