That’s one of my favourite stories. It didn’t get as many hits as my Nik Zherdev trade fail story, but Janik fascinated me. He actually was put on waivers this year right after camp. Nobody wanted him.

After one, the Wing lead 1-0. The Lightning start the second on the power play, tho.
Tampa Bay has the edge in shots, 10-9; Stamkos has four shots in that one period. Faceoffs are atrocious, tho, with the Lightning only winning 38% overall; Lecavalier is 2-5 (29%). Jones has three hits, Halpern & Krajicek each have a turnover, three different players have one steal each, and Walker has two blocked shots.

get really frustrated with Oates apparent PP philosophy? It all just seems so stagnant to me compared to other teams. No movement hardly, only trying to set up that one timer in the slot (that almost never comes/gets blocked/scuff the shot). hardly ever see any backdoor cuts and such

Well, the good news is that it’s still 1-0 Detroit after two.
The Lightning are still out-shooting the Wings, now 20-17; Stamkos has has five shots & Foster has three. Faceoffs have gotten much better, with the team winning 52%; Lecavalier worked himself up to 50% while Konopka has won three and lost two for 60%. Krajicek has two turnovers, five different players have one steal each, Malone has four hits, and Walker still has two blocked shots.

This team has fallen into the same rut as they were in last year. Can’t blame it on the coaching change (the coaching staff, maybe) but the same mistakes are being made as last season.

So which is the problem? The players or the system? Or is it just the wrong system for the players we have? Then what does it become? a player problem for failing to adjust or a coaching problem for failing to adjust the system?

It's coaching
Tocchet wants gritty players and wants to change his players to fit the system. The players aren’t adapting and the entir eteam is suffering. Even those who ARE playing well (by Rick’s regard) aren’t doing ANYTHING major to help the team win. Who is scoring goals of the Wright/Chewie/Downie/Konopka group?

You either commence a fire sale at the deadline...
….to bring in players that fit Tocchet’s “system” of grit-over-anything-else, or you change coaching and try to better utilize the strengths of the team.
