Lightning Shopping Lecavalier?
Although they deny it, speculation continues that the Lightning are shopping Vincent Lecavalier.
Here we go again...Time to sit through more talks about Vincent Lecavalier being traded. Yet again, the Montreal Canadiens are involved.
We all know that Vinny isn't having the greatest of seasons so far. But what people fail to realize is that his play has gotten consistently better and he does have 24 points in 29 games. As a side note, did anyone see him play the Caps last night? He was the Lightning's best player!

Speculation still surrounds the Canadiens that they are involved with the Lightning in trade talks for Lecavalier. It's no secret that the Habs would love to have him. Think about it, Vinny is a French-Canadien player who is 6'4 and 223 pounds. The Canadiens are an unbelievably small team (especially up front) who don't have many players with French-Canadien roots. Plus, Vinny grew up a Montreal fan! It all makes complete sense. Except for one major detail:
Vinny is signed to a long term,11 year deal worth about $7.7 million a year! Could Montreal inherit a cap hit like that? Sources believe that if they could, the deal would be made ASAP.
So What's The Bottom Line?
If the right package of players could be set up and money wasn't a problem, the deal WILL happen. Honestly, I know Vinny loves playing in Tampa Bay and he has done so much for the community, but I don't think he would be complaining too much about being traded to his "childhood" team. Pretty much, there would be celebration and rejoice in Montreal, and chaos and aggravation in Tampa (at least from me).
The only thing that would make me be somewhat okay with this going down is if the Lightning get a hell of a package of players, and we win! Winning makes everything better. Other than that...Don't trade Vinny!

There's blood in the water
It’s an annual thing but this time it’s local-fueled. HockeyBuzz.com writer Jon Jordan has taken up the charge of simply putting down Vincent at every turn and when rumors pop up — he spreads them. And like a fart, it drifts in the breeze. And other farts coming from other people who are making it up as they go, are speculating where Vinny wants to be traded to (Philly! Montreal! New York! LA!)…
And suddenly, it stinks, because all of these farts fogging the air.
Vincent Lecavalier is in the drivers seat with anything regarding a trade — remember that. The Lightning can’t shop him, the Lightning can’t deal him outright. Vinny has a no-movement clause and that says any trade has to be initiated by him. Not by the Lightning.
Trade speculation is fan-frustration fueled. Lecavalier is under-performing and they aren’t happy with it. Of course, Marty is under-performing but no one thinks to say anything about that because it’s Marty. Marty’s blue-collar and yada-yada-yada while Vincent is high and mighty

Unless, of course, Vinny wants out and is trying to keep it quiet. I can’t quite believe that, tho. He’s invested in the community, and loves the Tampa area.

And part of marketing Vincent would require it in the press
Other teams couldn’t keep hush-hush. That’s impossible. Look at what happened last winter in Montreal. The leak supposedly came out of Tampa of course, but the Montreal press still went crazy, as did the rest of the media.

As I watched...
the 2009 NHL entry draft I was sure it was going to happen. I envisioned Gary Bettman announcing the trade at the podium and everyone in the Belle Center going crazy. Then, it didn’t happen. It seemed to be over but i guess not. People wonder why Vinny hasn’t scored more. Maybe he’s still getting over the fact that his own team was trying to trade him!
If Vinny really wanted to be a Montreal Canadien...
He’d already be one. He would never have signed that long term deal to keep him in Tampa; he’d have taken a 1 yr deal instead and become a free agent (RFA) at the end of this season and went to Montreal and there wouldn’t be a thing the Lightning could do to stop him.
Or he could have made it know to Brian Lawton (either privately or publicly) that he wanted the trade to go down (that ALMOST did, if you believe what some circles say) and NO ONE in Tampa would have thought less of Vinny.
But here’s the rub…HE DIDN’T.
So you’ll never convince me that he would ever want to play in that French Canadian fishbowl that is Montreal. He’s not happy, true. He’s frustrated, true. But I just can’t see him coming up and saying “I can’t take this anymore, I want out.”
UFA, not RFA
And he’s been a UFA before — or avoided becoming one and signed a four year deal (2005) when he could have signed a one year deal and become a UFA in 2006.
So yes, he would have already become a member of the Blanc Bleu and Rouge if had wanted to. He chose not to.
And here’s a fact being overlooked: If he DID request a trade, he’d be abandoning a team that is just as frustrated as he is. Marty is not happy, Tanguay is not happy… Halpern? The only guys having big seasons had been Malone and Stamkos and the only guys getting praise were those on the bubble of being in the minors or in the NHL… The blue-collar types who are not scoring just the same as the top guys aren’t.

Thanks John.
Yep, thought about that about 1 minute after I posted. Sorry about that. And for all the rest of you out there that read this post, yes, I do know the difference between an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) and a Restricted Free Agent (RFA). And John is correct, I should have posted him as taking a one year deal and becoming a UFA at the end of the season.
The facts are still the same. He didn’t do it and that says a lot about where Vinny wants to play, even if he is too polite to tell Montreal to “go take a hike”….

Valid points...
and all very true. Yet, I didn’t say he would RATHER be a Canadien than a Bolt, but I don’t think he would complain too much if he was. The contract point you made is very true though. i like it!
Those who know me...
(Cassie, John)… they know what these stupid rumors do to me. I hate them. Hate them with passion. People get used to Vinny as a scorer but it’s not the only thing he does. He’s the captain, leader, mentor and of coures… face of the franchise. There are many thing I’d like to say but I will say only one – I can’t believe 8 people voted for answer “yes” in the poll… I can’t believe there are some fans who want to get rid of their captain :/
I completely agree with you. Some may argue that Stamkos is now the “face of the franchise”. I disagree. He is only in his 2nd year! Vinny will come out of the slump soon enough, we just have to stick with him.

Kat, remember out-of-towners who want Vinny on their own team (read: Montreal) can vote too
…that can be an influence as well on who voted “Yes”

What they should do is get a new coach. This team looks like they are lost out there. The talent is there. I’m watching the Bolts play the Hawks and the Hawks are making them look like a ECHL or IHL team. Vinny is overpaid, but moving him won’t do anything. Someone needs to motivate him, and Tocchet ain’t doing it. This franchise can’t handle another horrible season, or next summer we will be hearing about the Bolts moving instead of the Coyotes.
i agree...
I originally liked Tocchet. He was a major improvement over Barry Smell…i mean Melrose. Looking back on it, management decides to hire a virtually inexperienced coach over a stanley cup winning Peter Laviollette. I say, Tocchet out and John Stevens in.
I'm not of of those...
who call for coach changes every time the team is doing badly… but this time, I wouldn’t mind if Tocchet left the Lightning.
Here's putting it into perspective
This team has more talent than the 2000-2001 team that saw Steve Ludzik fired. He has not displayed the past results of Terry Crisp who was fired by the Lightning in 1997-98 (in part for losing, in part for losing the players, in part because Espo needed a sacrificial lamp and in part because of cost cutting moves).
What and where have the Lightning improved under Rick Tocchet besides conditioning compared to Barry Melrose’s team? And where have they regressed. Odds are people can name regression points but not improvement points despite the number of specialist coaches.

trading vinnie
trading vinnie would be a big mistake by the lightning, first of all;who would take his place? marty st louis is too short and steve stamcos is too new,it would have to be ryan malone,ok i’ll admit it appears as thought vinnie would like a trade to a good team and sometimes he plays like he doesnt care anymore, second who would you get for him? if i had my way i would accept no less than a player like rob blake and a draft pick or maybe get dan boyle back and bring joe thornton with him, well the sharks will never go for that nor would most teams in a transaction like that,i say the GM should have a long talk with coach toccet and tell him start antero ninimakki 8 of every 10 starts and if he cant get this team fired up they will replace him with someone who can !
Would the Lightning do anything for money?
Without Vinny the Lightning may as well roll into bankruptcy court and get this over with. They cannot even make employee payroll – although the players are being paid. It’s no wonder they are looking to trade Vinny. Maybe it will help them pay their bills. How sad.
