The CLS Re-Draft - So Far....
There is no set schedule as of yet for when people have to pick - that's still being figured out. The Lightning's second round pick is at 58 - followed by the third round pick at 63 - which I'm sure will garner me even more grief for who I chose. But that's alright. I was pretty sure going in that most people wouldn't like my decision.
So here's what we have so far, with the rest of the order after the break.
- Alexander Ovechkin, Calgary Flames
- Sidney Crosby, Vancouver Canucks
- Henrik Lundqvist, Tampa Bay Lightning
- Evgeni Malkin, Dallas Stars
- Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks
- Nicklas Lidstrom, New York Islanders
- Pavel Datsyuk, Philadelphia Flyers
- Zach Parise, Edmonton Oilers
- Ryan Getzlaf, Nashville Predators
- Vincent Lecavalier, Atlanta Thrashers
Vinny ended up going in the top ten after all. Good for him. I was wondering about that.
As mentioned previously, this is a snake order draft. Odd numbered rounds go 1-30; even numbered rounds go 30-1. At least, that's what they tell me. Since this is the first time at this, we're sort of making things up as we go along, at this point. The process of drafting will go much faster once we figure out a more efficient way of how to do things, though.
This is not a typical fantasy draft. This is an offseason exercise only. The winner will be determined by an NHL '10 simulation.
As more picks are made, I will update this list. For more information on picks, please visit the Cycle like the Sedins blog. They will also update the terms of the draft as we go along.

Parise and Getzlaf
Top ten? Before Nash? Before Luongo? Brodeur? Before Ignilia?
The Raw Charge -- the Tampa Bay Lightning weblog at SB Nation.
It's an NHL 10 Simulation
So taking Parise over Nash and Iginla is understandable since he had a hell of a year.
Parise: 45-49-94 and +30
Getzlaf: 25-66-91 and +5
Iginla: 35-54-89 and -2
Nash: 40-39-79 and +11
Which means Parise is going to be very well rated even though he already was. Nash shouldn’t even be in the discussion of top 10, IMO, while Parise and Iginla both could be taken understandably. I would always choose a goal scorer over a playmaker in the first round when selecting a forward, but if you wanted a playmaker, then Getzlaf would be a good choice. Only Malkin and Crosby had more assists than he did.
As far as goaltending goes. In the NHL series, you don’t really have to have the best goaltender to win big. I’ve simmed through a season having a goaltender that was 82 OV and made it to the playoffs without a problem.
Zach Parise has only been playing in the League since 2005
Same with Getzlaf. Riddle me this, when did the National Hockey League become a singular season league?

In this little exercise, it is only a one season league – that’s all that matters.

Did you not see the stipulations?
It’s going to be simmed in NHL 10, which means it will be based on the ratings EA gives. Those ratings are based around how well a player did the year prior.
As far as outside the simulation in regards to the NHL, Parise and Getzlaf have both been steadily improving since they came into the league in the 2005-06 season. In fact, Parise’s point production from last year to this year went up 31 points.
Iginla is great and I probably would’ve picked him over a couple of those guys based on his rating in the game alone, but if I was building a real team for the NHL I would choose Parise or Getzlaf simply because you can sign them for one of those ridiculously long term contracts and put together a core that can improve together for a longer amount of time. Nash just doesn’t have the playoff experience that Getzlaf (who also has a Cup) and Parise do.
This league needs help!!
I want to play in this league! Where is Jarome Iginla? Why has Brodeur not been drafted? As JPF said…what about Rick Nash? Why has only one defenseman gone so far? It is the position with the biggest drop off! Dion Phaneuf anyone? Chara? Green?Even Pronger! The only goalies worth taking this early are Brodeur and Luongo. The first three to four picks must be made using the numbers (the head) not gut feelings (the heart).
