The Newest Member of the Lightning (Probably): Alex Tanguay

The likelihood of Alex Tanguay joining the Tampa Bay Lightning has just gone up.

Here's some comments from Lightning general manager Brian Lawton about the team agreeing to a deal with wing Alex Tanguay from the team's Fan Fest.

On when the deal will be finalized:
"We have to go through the process of doing our due diligence. We're hoping to announce a completed signing early in the week."

As was posted previously, all that's left to be done is Tanguay passing a physical. His agent seems pretty positive that things will move along smoothly, however.

More after the break.

Star-divide

The agent for free-agent wing Alex Tanguay said his client will sign a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning after he passes a physical that will occur in Tampa on Monday or Tuesday.

"We have an agreement in principal," agent David Ettedgui said Saturday. "We're pretty happy he is with the Lightning and he's looking forward to giving his best."

Rick Tocchet  was also an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche while Tanguay still played in Denver. So Tanguay knows what he's getting in to in that way as well. With some help from Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis, Tanguay decided to play for the Lightning - and Vinny seems very pleased with the decision

"He asked me about Tampa and I told him about coming to the team and the direction it is going," Lecavalier said, and added, "Anybody that plays with a guy like Tanguay, he's such a great passer and can score. He brings a lot to the team, so I'm excited."

So, there you go. While it might not officially be a done deal, it's pretty much as good as. Welcome to the Lightning, Alex.

Now all they need is a second line right winger and they should be all set.

Anyone want to wager if Dana Tyrell will get a shot?

It’s going to be…
Tanguay – Vinny – Tyrell
Malone – Stamkos – Marty

I'd rather have Tyrell with Stamkos...

Though he will certainly get a chace to learn from the rest of the roster…

My reasoning is… well, put the two young guys together to form chemistry.

You guys are getting a high quality hockey player. He’ll make anyone he plays with better, especially at even strength.

I've always wanted to see Tanguay on the Bolts

Never thought it would happen… Even if there was opportunity this year.

Love his skill, love his passing ability. Pretty aware defensively. Great player. He’s going to piss you the hell off though when he gets into a great shooting position, only to pass off to someone.

I used to watch him when he played for Colorado – so I’m fully aware of that. I think he played on the same team with Forsberg for too long. It set a bad example to follow. ;o)

Been dealing with that for a while in TB

at least from 2005-2007.

Also aware he doesn’t shoot too much, that IS something that might need to be stressed to fans. He’s a passer.

Vinny likes passers

I can't help that I make some things look easier than they really are.

Solid veteran experience and solid player.

Glad to see the Lightning signed Tangs. I was hoping he’d end up on either of the Florida teams. Having followed Tanguay with the Flames for two years, I like what the guy brings to the game. Unfortunately things didnt work out in Calgary because he had a falling out with Mike Keenan when he was asked to be the Flames top penalty killer. He’s going to be a valuable compliment to the two two French Canadian players in the game. Love the move.

He probably won’t play that much with both Lecavalier and St. Louis, tho. During the last half of last season, Tocchet put St. Louis with Stamkos, and that seemed to have worked pretty well. So I’m not sure who’d be playing right wing on that link with Vinny and Tanguay. Or maybe Stamkos would be centering that line instead of Vinny. It’s hard to say right now.
