Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Ottawa Senators at Regina, Sk. Game Thread
Ottawa Senators at Tampa Bay Lightning, Sep 21, 2009 9:00 PM EDT
Game one of this week's Exhibition Gauntlet is tonight: Starting in Regina against the Senators, this Lightning team transverses the continent this week, playing back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back games. The Bolts will be facing Brian Elliot in net who will be playing the entire game. They'll also be facing many of Ottawa's regulars as well as 1st round draft pick Jared Cowen, who is playing in his first professional (albeit preseason) game this evening.
Radio coverage will be back on the Lightning's flagship station, 620AM WDAE
And for the curious, those who want to check out what's going on in Sensville tonight, head over to Silver Seven's game thread.

Okay, so who’s going to listen to this whole thing? (Keeping up with sports on the East Coast so sucks!)

And I get weird looks anytime it’s played at a hockey game and I sing it. I don’t know if that’s because I know the words or because of my singing. Probably the latter. I can’t carry a note in a paper bag…..

No French though.
I don’t do the first part in French thing. Don’t speak French. I had three years of Spanish and three years of Latin in High School. French with a southern accent just doesn’t sound right…

Prospects and third liners again. Interested to see how Matt Walker does in his first action of the year after a minor “lower body injury”. (I hate those vague references to injuries. I understand why, just don’t like them).

The fact that they can’t come right out and say what the injury is tells you right there that there’s no honor in hockey anymore.

Maybe it’s because they’re playing in Regina, and I started watching hockey with the WHL, but this just strikes me as a major junior game so far. It’s probably just an association thing, but is that bad?

No, not bad at all. I got started with the hockey thing late in life (for me) so I’ve only seen NHL hockey and ECHL hockey. Not seen any juniors or major juniors games. Go to a lot of ECHL games since Charlotte has a team and that’s only about 45 miles away.

It just shows a lack of confidence. Confident players shoots. An insecure player doesn’t. Insecure teams don’t typically win a lot of games. And, sadly, it’s the one thing that teams can deliberately control.

Speaking of shootingq
I asked a friend what they would ask Ryan Malone if they had a chance to interview him. “Why don’t you shoot more often?” wa what he came up with…

by John Fontana on Sep 21, 2009 9:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Good question.
He had a really good shooting percentage last year. He’s got a good shot. And I think he does need to shoot more.
by TB_hockey_fan on Sep 21, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Then again?
Tanguay’s in the same boat… Freddie Modin was in the same boat too in TB.
Someone DOES need to take the shot but I don’t think it’s as big a deal with some players with high shooting percentage. If they shot more, they’d miss more. A smart player picks and chooses his shots.
Though, as the comment above suggests, avoiding shots all together suggests insecurity.
To strive, to seek, to find, and to forever keep it Raw. Raw Charge.
by John Fontana on Sep 21, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But sometimes avoiding shots doesn’t mean insecurity as much as trying to set up a linemate for a perfect play or scoring chance. Sometimes you just gotta take the shot and hope for a tip in or rebound or something. Shooting percentage is good, but it’s not always the best judge of how good a shooter actually is.
by TB_hockey_fan on Sep 21, 2009 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If a guy is in a better position for a shot than you are, then you should pass. However, it’s not situational that I’m talking about, but over the course of the game(s). If a player would rather pass than shoot – consistently throughout the game – then that’s a problem.

Su never answered me because – I finally realized – that I never sent her that text. Bad me. Do you want to come up with some questions anyhow? She’s hoping to interview Malone (mostly because she’s a Pens fan), and Tokarski, and Helenius (because they played in the WHL in Washington State).

They are going to have to be a little more greedy…shoot instead of trying to pass and set up the “perfect shot”. That’s the MSL-Stammer-Bugsy line as well as VL and Alex and whoever they get to play on the right side. Really hard to score when you don’t shoot the puck.

I really don’t know. It almost seems like they are pushing for him to make it, but honestly I think another year in junior might do him some good. He’s go the body for it, just not sure the mentality is there yet.
