One down, 81 Tampa Bay Lightning games to go....
Some thoughts about last night's season opener....
- Good for Steve Downie that he wouldn't let himself be baited into taking a penalty. Two years ago, he would've gone there. It's great that he plays with an edge, but let's hope he continues to stay on the edge and doesn't go over it too often.
- Speaking of Downie, how long will it be before he's not given a penalty purely based on his reputation? That sort of looked to be the case last night when he ended up with an unsportsmanlike. However, he may have deserved it simply because of him talking to the official afterwards. Still, will he ever get the benefit of the doubt? Probably not, and that's too bad.
- What was up with that phantom goaltender interference call against Dominic Moore? Did the official see something I didn't? Or did he think he saw something I didn't? Guess the officiating sort of picked up where it left off from last season.
- I thought that Vincent Lecavalier had a good game. It was nice to see him get his first goal of the season in Game 1, but I don't have any expectations that he'll score every game just because he scored in the first one. Still, it looks promising that he's gotten back to form after a couple of off-seasons for him.
- Vinny, by the way, was outstanding in the faceoff circle. He ended up winning 60% of his faceoffs for the entire game, but the first period he won 86%. Dominic Moore won 62% of his faceoffs, and Adam Hall won all four of the faceoffs he took during the game.
- Steven Stamkos scored two goals in his first game of the season. There's been some question as to whether he can duplicate the goal totals from last season, particularly when everyone knows where he's going to shoot from. Well, it looks possible, but it is still early. Time will tell with that.
- The unheralded player of the night was unquestionably Nate Thompson. The guy was everywhere, doing everything he was supposed to and more. He had four shots on goal, two hits, and was 50% in the faceoff circle. He may not be the impact player that people expect someone like Stamkos to be, but he's definitely a key cog in the works.
- Mike Smith looked solid in net. He wasn't shaky like he was at times last season, nor was he the flamboyant stickhandling goaltender from the season before. He was quietly competent, did his job well, and that was definitely a good thing.
- Guy Boucher's system is definitely fast-paced and fluid. But my question is, will the players be able to play like that for all 82 games this season? It seems like a style that's going to be wearing people down awfully fast if they're not careful about pacing themselves.
- The top power play unit is as scary as advertised. But the second power play unit is probably just as scary - only in a different way. Teams will probably take a breather after the first unit leaves the ice, and that's when that second unit will take advantage of the opposing team's lapse. We saw that last night with the first goal of the game:
- If the first game is anything to go by, and it may not be, the second period may again be the Lightning's worst period of play.
- Was it just me, or was Mike Lundin the best defenseman on the ice? Pavel Kubina and Victor Hedman were both quietly competent, but they really just stuck to keeping things simple and doing their jobs - not that there's anything wrong with that. Lundin, on the other hand, made a big play or two. He's someone to keep an eye on this season, I think.

Totally agree on several points.
First, there were a bunch of “wow” moments from Nate Thompson — his wrap around attempt in the first, and then watching him take several pucks during the 5-on-3.
And Mike Lundin as well. Solid defense.

Mike Lundin is a star in the making, largely because Boucher’s system seems to be tailored to his game. As for Hedman, I would like to see him play the body more. He gets there and makes contact but doesn’t complete the play. That led to his man getting back into the play on a couple of occassions last night and that shouldn’t happen. Finish the check Victor.
Great points on Thompson, too. He really came on late last year and it is great to see him continuing his solid play. Perfect grinder for this team.
Good to see Smitty playing well again. Maybe getting married settled him down. :)
Hes never been a physical being, and probably will not be for a few more years.
Especially with a system that favors his proper positioning and speed over taking the body.

Some questionable calls
A few of the penalty calls in the second period were borderline, but once we committed a couple we didn’t do ourselves any favors. Thompson is a great role player. Last year as a 3rd line center he was in over his head but is the pefect 4th line center and penalty killer. Lundin was solid during the last 2 periods, though he made a few gaffes in the first. I thought Hedman and Kubina both played well. Jones, Clark and Vernace were all pretty soft, though they moved the puck well and played decent in the offensive zone. I worry what some of the bigger and more skilled guys will do against these 3. Smitty was solid and that was probably the biggest plus of the game. I think we missed the physical play of Ohlund in the second period. Smaby may also have been a better choice against the Trash with their big forwards. We should probably see the same lineup against the smaller and faster sHABS,
Don in St Pete
ell of a game!
my thoughts were tyrell played fantastic, really portrayed what I think Boucher wanted to see….and Purcell was very impressive with the puck, a few times he carried the puck up the ice all alone, and to me Moore’s goal was just as much Ted’s goal as it was Moore’s
I pretty much agree. As for the Boucher’s system though… I still think the players need to get used to it, need to see what 60 mins of this style of play do to their bodies and how to stay in a good shape for the whole, or at least most of the game. It’s still too early for judgements, I think.
I really liked what I saw, there was no one who would stand out in a bad way (as Meszaros used to). All players did their job well or amazingly well. Hope they can keep at it.
I love the Lightning AND the Flyers... go ahead, preach me!

Good start
Only thing I didnt like, was the three unanswered goals. Lightning did jump right back after the third goal, mut we almost let Atlanta take all the momentum and the lead late in the game. Solid play from Vinny, its a good start to a long season.
By the way, where was Gagne? Didn’t hear him much, except for a play or two. We need him to be a bit more explosive, more shots on goal.
He was good. I watch him every game (especially him) and he played well. I don’t like when people think player had a bad game when “you didn’t hear him much”. He was doing great job on the PP, PK as well and screened Atlanta’s goalie when Vinny scored his goal.

As I joked on the game thread
With the secondary scoring (Moore) and the second-unit-power-play goal (Downie), The Lightning already have more offensive offensive production out of lower line guys than they had all last season.

Raw Charge.
You saw the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows with this game.
It was nice in a way, because it makes you realize how dependent it is on the two aspects of a player – playing within yourself, and operating as a whole. When this team came out firing on all cylinders, they put it on Atlanta, and boy did they do it in a hurry.
But, when the wheels fell off in the second and a few forwards found themselves getting out of position, it showed in a very significant way (and yes, there were a LOT of bad calls there). Maintain the pace. That’ll define our season.
