Lightning make a slew of roster moves, roster finalized? [UPDATED]

TSN's Bob Mackenzie reports Mattias Ritola, center, has been claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning from the Detroit Red Wings.  While this is Yzerman taking hand-me-downs from his old team, this is certainly going to make the roster reduction tomorrow even more interesting.

And it has.

Eric Perrin, who was in camp on a tryout basis, has been released from his tryout.  That puts us right back at square one regarding the roster.  The Lightning need to reduce the number of forwards on the team.  Chris Durno seems like a candidate to be sent down (as he has cleared waivers) but there is also a chance Johan Harju may end up being demoted to the Norfolk Admirals.

Perrin is now a free agent and could end up anywhere.  Including Norfolk.  We'll keep you posted.

But hold on here kids!  We ain't done yet!  The Lightning ahve also placed defeneman Mathieu Roy on waivers.  That settles the defensive battle once and for all if Roy is headed for Norfolk.  If Mattias Ohlund is placed on IR, that lowers the number of defensemen to 7.  If he's not, the Bolts carry 8 defensemen.

Ritola, 23, has played in a total of 7 NHL games.  Registering a single point in that span.  He had 42 points (19 g, 23a) for Grand Rapids last season.

[Note by John Fontana, 10/05/10 3:09 PM EDT ] Damian Cristodero is reporting things are done -- the Bolts are getting under the roster limit a day before the deadline.  We'll have more ont hat after the jump.

Star-divide

Damian speculates, and there is a degree of certainty to everything, that Dana Tyrell will make the roster and Johan Harju will be sent to the Norfolk Admirals.  Harju is making the transition to the North American game this year and could use more time on a smaller ice surface.

Cedrick Desjardins and Chris Durno will be sent to Norfolk.  Desjardins being demoted was a certainty to begin with -- it was just a matter of time and the health of Mike Smith that kept him in Tampa.

Of course, there is also the chance the Lightning don't re-assign Harju.  Cristordero talks about Mattias Ohlund's situation and the fact he could be headed to IR.  The Harju move ((if he was indeed sent to Norfolk) coupled with the Ohlund move would give the bolts 22 players on the roster.  My thinking is -- why send Harju down now if Ohlund going on IR creates roster space?  Give him a taste of the NHL level before he does get sent down (when Ohlund is healthy again).

[Note by John Fontana, 10/05/10 4:43 PM EDT ] Johan Harju has indeed been reassigned to the AHL, per the team.

Hmm

Interesting move by Yzerman in getting Mattias.

Perrin

Didn’t Perrin say he wouldn’t be willing to accept a two-way contract? I hope his outlook changed—I’m sure the Ads could use more veteran leadership.

Does anyone know anything about Ritola? Yzerman apparently likes him…

Get this

Immediately after the expiration of his ELC with the Wings, they re-signed him to a 3 year deal. no qualifying offer. Just outright resigned him.

According to Bolts fans

he is definitely NHL ready just didn’t make the team due to their offensive depth

That was so odd

“What is he doing talking about Bolts fans in a third-person tense on a Lightning site?” :-)

Ritola was a highly regarded prospect

Though I hate to see Perrin go, you have to like Yzerman getting a 23yo with a great upside in exchange for a 34yo undersized overachiever. I like the mix on the d and forward corps now.

I would not pencil in any line combo

That’s the impression I am getting from Boucher. But personnel wise — unless something changes, that pretty much reflects who is going to be available on opening night.

Boucher has said that in post-game interviews, so I would expect a lot of line changes.

Norfolk is going to be stacked!

Hat’s off to Steve Yzerman for giving the Admirals a chance to be a Calder Cup Contender, allowing our young players to develop in a winning environment. Hershey will still be the team to beat but I think Norfolk should be in the mix all season.

The one wild card that remains in Norfolk

Is Jon Cooper.

a friend of mine who used to play with me here in tampa is the goalie for the souix falls stampede in the USHL, i could ask him how green bay was as an opponent for him last year.

by TomK91 on Oct 5, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

scratch that

WAS the stampede goalie. he committed to playing for northeastern this year.

Cooper has a learning curve, no doubt

However, I’m not sure Yzerman and Brisebois would have fired Jimmy Johnson if they didn’t think Cooper was better. Norfolk should have a great team. I came up with the following line combos.

Durno-Szczechura-Fornataro
Simek-Wright-Harju
Angelidis-Jones- Giliati
Marks-Pouliot-Berry
Fritz

Wishart Roy
Jackson Mihalik
Barberio Gudas
Quick

Tokarski
Desjardins

I wouldn’t be surprised if Desjardins gets the nod for the starting job. I have them as Desjardins #1 Tokarski #1A.

The only thing stopping Ced from starting

Would be injury. The abdominal/groin strain that he aggravated in Calgary
