2010 Vancouver Olympic Hockey Game Thread: USA vs Russia (Women)

Who: USA (1-0) vs Russia (0-1), women's ice hockey

Where: Thunderbird Stadium, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

When: 5:30 pm Eastern / 2:30 pm Pacific

How: MSNBC (US TV) / SB Nation (online only) / CTVOlympics.ca (Canada - online only)

This isn't going to be a truly competitive game between equals, but it ought to be a spirited match up all the same. The American women are currently ranked number one in the world going into this tournament. The Russian women are ranked number six. This will be the second game for both teams in this round robin portion of the tournament.

SB Nation will have a game thread as well. Details will be posted when they become available.

I don’t expect there to be much action here – not after the US men’s team won, and it being a bit early still. But, we’ll give this a shot, anyways.

Russia’s acutally pretty good. They do a great job clogging up the neutral zone.

The Russian goalie is pretty good as well. She plays her angles well and moves great laterally. Very quick on her feet.

Thanks for the commentary (am lurking), I was going to ask if there was a live-score but looks like you are giving one.

Poor Russians, am cheering for them to make a comeback (and avoid a shutout).

No problem. Do appreciate all the commentary, so want to encourage those willing to take the time to provide updates and scores.

My day is not too bad so far, though busy at work (thus lurking rather than making smart comments about games I don’t know too much about).

How is your day going? Also which team you cheering for (or is it both of them)?

by Sidicus on Feb 16, 2010 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

The US. Although, I’d like to see Russia get a goal or two.

Yeah, don’t like shut-outs in most sports (unless its the Bolts getting them).

Have a friend who is watching the game at home (we actually gets Olympic Ice Hockey over here). He has just described it as boring, probably because its a very one-sided game.

Are there different rules for international hockey (such as the checking etc?), or is it as physical as in the NHL?

by Sidicus on Feb 16, 2010 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

The only major rule is that there’s no body checking in women’s hockey – which women who play hockey hate. That’s what happens when old men make up the rules to women’s sports. But despite that, it’s still a very physical game. Full-out body checking is actually a two-minute penalty, but the officials let a lot of incidental contact go.

by Cassie McClellan on Feb 16, 2010 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I will stay sitting on the fence on this issue but have heard of similar problems in other sports where rules and games are split along gender lines (in some sports probably so the women don’t show the men up).

by Sidicus on Feb 16, 2010 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

US and Canada are the best two women’s national teams. Finland and Sweden come in close second tier. Everyone else’s programs are about ten years behind those four countries. Which is why you get these blowouts.

This game is being played a lot more competitively than it appears. Actually, Russia’s doing it to themselves in. They keep taking penalties that they don’t have to, and the US keeps scoring on those power plays

Six power play goals, two shorthanded goals, 12-0 after two periods. I think I’m going to call this a game thread. I was hoping that this game would’ve been more competitive. Oh well. Enjoy the drubbing Canada will give Norway later. Have a good night, everybody.
