Habs won 5-3 today

for those who were unaware…

Also, I feel it’s noteworthy to point out that the Capitals and Senators are 2 games away each, from a matchup where there could be a winner of 15 straight games (WSH) and a winner of 13 straight games (OTT) playing each other. Caps have the Pens and Habs to play; Sens play the Leafs and Flames.

It’s very possible.

And in the southeast

WHoever wins, we all lose: Florida and the Thrashers set to square off.

So as I pointed out the other night

the last two encounters between these two teams have produced a 9-6 Flames victory, and an 8-6 Bolts victory.

I would anticipate a high scoring game, just as a preparation thing.

Singing "O Canda" is SO much easier than the "Star Spangled Banner"...

You don’t hafta be an opera singer to sing the Canadian anthem…

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Feb 6, 2010 7:15 PM EST reply actions

I love “O Canada”. It’s such a nice song. And hard to butcher when singing it. So unlike our anthem. But that’s what happens when you take a poem and put it to the tune of an English drinking song, I guess.

I can't carry a tune in a paper sack, but I can manage O Canada without too much trouble.

I’ll sing it at any game I go to that they play it. (and get strange looks from folks around me a lot of the time…)

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Feb 6, 2010 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

It seems weird when it’s not sung to me. But then, I watched hockey in Vancouver for years and years. Seems like both anthems should always be sung no matter what.

When it’s sung right, it does for me, too. But when it’s sung badly, then it just makes me cringe.

GO BOLTS! lovingthelightning.wordpress.com

Do no accuse Roseann Barr of being southern. She is not.

And that is an insult to those of us that ARE Southern.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Feb 6, 2010 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

was refering to the “cringe-factor,” not rosanne barr. sorry though, for the southern comment.

GO BOLTS! lovingthelightning.wordpress.com

by Meredith Qualls on Feb 6, 2010 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

Not a problem.

I have heard a few Southerners butcher the anthem too. My “cringe factor” is when somebody tries to put their own “spin” on it. Just sing the damn song like it was supposed to be and stop trying to turn it into a top 10 hit.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Feb 6, 2010 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

oh man, that kills me too! just sing the song and let it be.

GO BOLTS! lovingthelightning.wordpress.com

by Meredith Qualls on Feb 6, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

And that happens at almost every major sporting event in the US.

People think they have to do something special. Just sing the song property and that IS special. Beautiful when done right.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Feb 6, 2010 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not against new arrangements

A fresh take on a traditional british bar song (which is the basis for the Anthem) isn’t something to get riled up over. Embellishing the hell out of the song, however, is.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Feb 6, 2010 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

And that embellishment is the "cringe factor".

It can be tastefully done and I have no problem with it.

After one, the Lightning are down 1-0.

They’re being out-shot 11-5; five different players have a SOG each. They’re also doing well in the circle, having won 54% of the faceoffs; Lecavalier is 5-3 (63%). And the Lightning are out-hitting Calgary, tho, 7-4; seven different players have a hit each. Three players have a giveaway, Hedman has the lone steal, and Lundin has blocked four (four?!) shots already.

They’re now being out-shot 20-10; Malone has two shots. The Lightning are still dominating faceoffs, winning 59%; Lecavalier is 7-3 (70%). They’re out-hitting the Flames 18-9; Ohlund has four hits. Stamkos has three turnovers, Thompson & Meszaros each have a steal, and Lundin still has four blocked shots.

So, to those Lightning players who happen to peruse this game thread, I have one thought for you:

Don’t wait for the top guys to put you over the top, don’t wait for Niittymaki to bail you out – take control of this game and win it. Because it’s totally winnable, but only if you take control. You can’t slack off, you can’t cruise on by. Buckle down, pull down your helmet, make sure your fighting straps tied down, and run them over. Carry the rest of the team on your back and give it your best shot.

That is all.

just curious – why is nashville in the western conference?

"they’re big. they’ve got big man bodies." lovingthelightning.wordpress.com

by Meredith Qualls on Feb 6, 2010 9:00 PM EST reply actions

The stupidity of NHL alignment...

They set a precedent of putting east teams in the west long ago and they don’t really give a damn about having a true alignment that makes sense.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Feb 6, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

…Since it’s only a four-hour drive between Nashville and Atlanta, you mean? (Which I know because I’ve done that drive.) Because they want the conferences to be spit evenly down the middle: 15 for each conference, five for each of the three divisions per conference. There aren’t a lot of options otherwise.

"...And he's only NINETEEN!!!"

Raw Charge, an SBN Tampa Bay Lightning community.

by Cassie McClellan on Feb 6, 2010 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

The "East/West" divide causes that complication

Detroit is not in the west, neither is Columbus. Heck, Dallas is not a western city but becasue the west is not filled with teams, it has to be placed there. That one I can get.

The others I can’t.

The alignment is stupid — the eastern conference and western conference. That regional alignment complicates things.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

Sweet.

They needed that 2nd point.

GREAT win.

by FloridaownsFSU on Feb 6, 2010 9:41 PM EST reply actions

We stole that

Give the Flames a ton of credit for playing a well paced game in short order with their recent schedule. They could have easily taken this one.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Feb 6, 2010 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I was expecting the kind of overtime / shoot out that was common during the first half of this season. Good to still be standing heading towards the rush to the play-offs.

by Sidicus on Feb 6, 2010 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Mez needed it too.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Feb 6, 2010 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Has Mez not been playing / scoring too well?

by Sidicus on Feb 6, 2010 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

Not really. He's taken a lot of crap from bloggers about his fat contract and not so great play.

And to be honest, he’s made quite a few defensive booboos that cost goals…

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Feb 6, 2010 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

Well, well, well…an actual OT win. Doesn’t happen too often, does it. Good for them.

That’s what he should’ve been doing in that situation.

Vancouver on Tuesday – in Tampa.

So the Bolts now have a streak of 1 against Canadian teams? Could go to 2??

by Sidicus on Feb 6, 2010 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Unfortunately, they’ve got to try to contain the Sedin twins. No easy task. Hopefully, Ohlund will be able to help with pointers.

28 wins by the break

and I’d be content.

The schedule isn’t all that scary.

by FloridaownsFSU on Feb 6, 2010 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

That Vancouver game could be a little difficult

so the Lightning are gonna need to bring their A game for that affair. Tonight was not an “A” effort.

by FloridaownsFSU on Feb 6, 2010 9:46 PM EST reply actions

Intimidates me

But they aren’t Washingotn… And we paced with Washingotn. They do need to bring their A game to that one

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Feb 6, 2010 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

The Lightning are familiar with Washington. They aren’t so familiar with Vancouver. Could be a problem if they decide to not take the game seriously.

by Cassie McClellan on Feb 6, 2010 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

But they will Tuesday if they follow the pattern..

They tend to bring their A game when the opponent also has an A game…(most of the time, anyway)

Atlanta

and still 15 minutes left.

by FloridaownsFSU on Feb 6, 2010 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Late start because Atlanta played the Caps last. I’ve heard they had to drive down to Richmond from DC to fly out. They got into Florida late because of the weather, regardless.

Florida / Atlanta. Who do we want to win? (though a tie game would probably be worse as both get points)

by Sidicus on Feb 6, 2010 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

Wait a minute

was there a delay or something in that game? It started at 7, and there’s still nearly a full period left, around 10:00.

no, it started at 7:30

by Tina Robinson on Feb 6, 2010 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

Frankly, so am I. Although, Richmond didn’t get as much snow as we did. I guess Pittsburgh, who’s supposed to play the Caps tomorrow, are flying into Newark and busing it down to DC. In good weather and without traffic, that’s a 5-hour drive.

I'm turning out the lights

Bolts persevere a snoozer at Times Palace. Were they bright and shiny? No… But they outlasted the Flames and won in OT — 2-1 the final. Steven “Birthay Boy” Stamkos notched #32 on the season.

Next game is Tuesday versus Vancouver. See you then!
