What they're saying about Jeffrey Vinik and Lightning ownership

Here's a collection of quotes from sources around the net and in the press regarding the Lightning sale to Jeff Vinik.  Most fo the common reactiosn that were found were mostly about the departure of OK Hockey, and less so about the private man that is Jeffrey Vinik.

If you have otehr thoughts, or have other sources of note, feel free to post them in the comments

Vinik was rather adamant in what he wants to accomplish here, and it's easy to sit behind a computer and tell you to take him at his word when he ultimately will be judged by his actions. But his words are all we have to go by now, and as far as first impressions go, you have to like what he is saying.

-- Erik Erlendsson, Tampa Tribune

So now the pre-judgment of Vinik begins, with noted Lightning booster (/snark) Ken Campbell of The Hockey News saying that "by all accounts, Vinik is not a hockey guy" before Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune shot back with "he is a big hockey fan, contrary to earlier reports. Thinking this is good news for fans."

Time will tell ... but give him time. The Lightning are right on the playoff bubble, but there's a long road ahead to mending what the previous owners broke. Meanwhile, here's Vinik:

-- Greg Wyshynski, Puck Daddy

As for the Lightning under Vinik, we don't know, not for sure anyway. Look, I just found out it was Vinik, not Vinick. The jury is still out. Heck, the jurors haven't even sat down.

What we know is that the Unknown is better than the Known, and one Known is that Koules and Barrie were going to have trouble meeting payroll.

-- Martin Fennelly, Tampa Tribune

Will Jeff Vinik be any better? Only time will tell, but it's difficult to think how it could be worse than Koules/Barrie. The biggest issue in the Koules/Barrie regime (outside of that whole money issue) is that the two owners wanted to also be coaches and GMs, like they were involved in some sort fantasy league.

-- Mike Chen, From The Rink

Vinik may not know anything about hockey, and that may be a good thing. Unlike OK Hockey who professed to be hockey fans and ended up pissing away the team, if Vinik has no interest in hockey I could care less. As long as Vinik hires the right people who knows how to run a hockey club, what we will see as an end product on the ice will be a good product. Unlike OK Hockey who took the reigns over the team, I doubt Vinik will make any hockey related decision and that really is the way to go.

-- Sha-Sha Toth, The Hockey Bay Blog

In total seriousness, just do what you just told us you were going to do.  Create a winning environment that players want to be apart of, and fans can enjoy.

-- Don't Trade Vinny

Are you going to do some sort of writeup like: “OK Hockey What Went Wrong”? The whole saga of Oren Koules being the owner of the Lightning was very intriguing to me and I would love to know what exactly went wrong. Bettman’s done a good job keeping this stuff under wraps, all we’ve ever really heard was that Koules/Barrie had private meetings with the NHL, deadlines to purchase, etc…and then bang a new owner comes in… and OK’s out. Fortunately for Lightning fans, the financial trouble details didn’t really become public like in Phoenix and Jim Ballsile really never showed up to the party. Does the fact that Palace Sports had so much skin in the game the reason? I’d love for Raw Charge to eventually spotlight how the OK Hockey sandcastle came crashing down in less than 3 years.

"Where do you go from here, Dion?" "I go to Toronto."
Spreading that Calgary Flames, Montreal Expos, The U, and Orlando Magic love.

That's a pretty big story to write up...

It’s been vented on, piece by piece, the past few weeks with the ownership change in the spotlight… A what-went-wrong post might indeed be forthcoming, but not immediately.

Not a Big Mystery

Davidson’s widow was so desperate to sell that Bettmen (the league) did not properly vet the prospective owners. One was a con man who used other people’s money for his investments; The other was less of a con man that used other people’s money for his investments/projects. A background check would have revealed that is the way the pair have historically done business. Declining attendance (already a given) and the dramatic decrease in the value of the land involved in the transaction made meeting expenses and paying debt service a pipe dream. Biggest loser was Palace who lost at least $64M in the deal. The SPT, who has been behind the curve on anything that occurs off the ice, reported Koules as the big loser. That shows a complete lack of understanding of what happened. Barrie put up nothing and Koules put up next to nothing to acquire the Lightning. Palace held most of the paper to float the transaction. The Times also reported that the recession was to blame. That’s hogwash. The recession was clearly upon us when OK came on board. Bettman’s main interest was to perpetuate the illusion of the high worth of NHL franchises and to placate the widow Davidson. If the self-described “cautious” new owner does not jettison the GM and head coach by draft day, the fans will be subject to the same crappy product.

We now have hope

I’m seriously excited about our new boss…….and I think the team is too (there’s a fresh step lately. I love this team !!! We have the nuclious with Vinny, Marty &(have u seen) Steven to be competitive with any other teams stars. I haven’t heard a lot from Phil & his thoughts, but I hope Vinik keeps the teams daddy & his experience on board. YEP, I’m excited,,,,,,,I think the fans are gonna be happy. my one complaint that needs fixin is change the name of the forum back to thunder sumptin,,, I’m tired of directing people back to tampa from st pete.

I am excited too

Sounds like we finally have a solid owner who cares about hockey contrary to the early reports.
Time will tell though.

Times Palace was never named "Thunder something". Different venue

…And in the day of corporate sponsorships, there is little chance that the venue ever simply gets renamed something not tied to a company or business. “Ice Palace” was classy. SPTF? Not at all.

Jay Feaster is still unemployed...

Note to the new owner: Brian Lawton sucks. Especially in the draft. Meanwhile, Jay Feaster is still unemployed, still in town, and has a Cup on his resume. Please give him a call.

What do you mean he sucks in the draft?

And what did Jay Feaster produce in the draft? Mike Egener? Retired. Andy Rodgers? Out of the Tampa Bay organization. Riku Helenius? Sweden. Vlad Mihalik? Still in the AHL…

Brian Lawton has had ONE draft, and by all accounts, it was a success. Alex Hutchings is tearing it up in the OHL, Jaroslav Janus earned a pro contract only months after being drafted — and pushed out Helenius. Hedman? Panik? Carter?

Explain WHY he sucks in the draft, I’m VERY curious… ESPECIALLY when you lobby for Feaster with his track and lack of results at the draft…

Oh, and the "Cup on his resume"

…with a team assembled largely by Rick Dudley. What did Feaster do? Sydor, Lukowich and Chris Dingman, signed Eric Perrin…

Four players, one being a minor leaguer… And yet it’s HIS built winner? No.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

god, not another dudley lover!

Dudley may have brought in some of the pieces (blind squirrels, etc) but he would’ve traded them all away before the team won a damn thing. What did Feaster do? Not trade Vinny, that’s what. Granted, I don’t buy the Lawton hate (especially not for his drafting skills) but Dudley doesn’t deserve the credit you seem to be giving him.

Be fair, that's not true

I’ve seen him on NHL On-the-Fly……..

I should be sound asleep... but it's more fun to watch the Hockey!

...As a GM

To cover those bases.

Clarifying

One, Feaster is not unemployed. He has a personal services contract with Palace through the end of this season. Two, The Lightning won a Stanley Cup under his stewardship, something the pseudo cognoscenti refuse to give him credit for. He supplied the missing pieces that put the Lightning over the top. Three, where is Dudley? Associate GM of the Thrashers. "Nuff said.

Fontana’s defense of Lawton is mystifying. He drafted second. The player he drafted in the first round is ranked 14th among rookies by The Fourth Period. As for the other rounds, he should have done fairly decently getting the jump on 28 other teams. All his trades have been horrible. The Lightning did not receive even the same value in any of them for what they gave up. He signed some good free agents…but anyone on this blog could have replicated that or done better. (Actually, he overpaid for two or three of them). Lastly, GMs throughout the league don’t want to do business with someone having a history of untrustworthiness unless, of course, they clearly get the upper hand in a deal. So far, their strategy has succeeded 100 percent of the time.

I predict Tocchet will never be a head coach at the NHL level after the Bolts let him go. He would have a tough time being hired as an AC. No one will hire Lawon as GM. No one.
