Tomas Vokoun has agreed to waive his NTC

…to certain teams, at least. So the Panthers will be sellers at the deadline, potentially. How far the sale goes remains to be seen.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

Do you make a concentrated push for the playoffs

Or do you play this deadline realistically — building long term by dealing rental players you have on the roster?

As I said in the game thread last night, this season is down the sewer, we need to plan for next year.

I just realised that probably / possibly means losing Halpern… I don’t like that thought :¬(

Bob Mackenzie reporting

Tampa Bay Lightning players have been notified their flight out-of-town has been moved back to post-deadline 3:30 PM and not to be surprised if moves are made.

Prime time, lovely

Skoula was loved by Lemaire in Minnesota, so not totally surprising on that one.

When you get home...

…free live streaming is available for TSN’s deadline broadcast. Dunno if you’ll have accesss in the UK but worth trying

I’ve been following the audio stream from tsn.ca, which hasn’t been distracting at all, honestly!

I would not be surprised

…if we do see a junk-for-junk swap with some Lightning AHL players changing teams.

by John Fontana on Mar 3, 2010 12:51 PM EST reply actions

Hopefully it all works out for the Ads though, they’ve been on an impressive run since ditching Rumble (a player I still have no idea why he was engraved on the Cup with us!)

Talk has been about unloading Mike Smith

…at least from Damian Cristodero. Smith will get the start in Washington tomorrow per the team

checking in...

I’m at work and having to do this “on the sly” but just wanted to check in with the gang. Following as close as possible; sounds like Bolts aren’t going to be doing much of anything. Not sure if that’s good or bad….

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 3, 2010 1:17 PM EST reply actions

hi Tina

been slow, just speculation… Nothing tangible. But we will keep eyes peeled

Halpy traded...

to LA. Just announced on TSN

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 3, 2010 1:31 PM EST reply actions

Don’t know what’s coming back out way. Bummer. Didn’t want Halpy traded… oh well.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

Also a possible deal for Smitty in the works.

by Tina Robinson on Mar 3, 2010 1:34 PM EST reply actions

Hello, just seen this thread. How long until the deadline hits?

Sounds like things are just starting to happen.

I would have guessed the three big players to move would have been Halpern, Tanguay and Nitty. Really thought Smith would be the main guy in the net for the next couple of years so rumours somthing is happening is a suprise.

by Sidicus on Mar 3, 2010 1:39 PM EST reply actions

deadline is 3pm eastern time Jon.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 3, 2010 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks Tina, much appreciated.

If I am doing my numbers right (and I don’t always) that means another 7 1/2 hours of trading left? Looks like its going to be a long day.

by Sidicus on Mar 3, 2010 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

Lets make that just over an hour (when I look at the right clock). Silly me.

by Sidicus on Mar 3, 2010 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

Bolts get Ted Purcell and a 3rd round pick for Halpy.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 3, 2010 1:45 PM EST reply actions

Purcell is apparently a player along the lines of Bochenski

No idea why Bolts wanted him, unless to flip in another deal. They cleared 2M in cap space (prorated) with Halpy out. This guy has 600K (prorated) cap hit. I can see Halpy for the 3rd, but no idea why this guy is a throw in…

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 3, 2010 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

AHL, maybe

does he have options. This may be for Norfolk specifically.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 3, 2010 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Found this info on Purcell...

Per Hockey’s Future (updated Dec 2009): "Purcell is a tall, lanky forward who is blessed with great hands. While he is better known as a playmaker, Purcell has also demonstrated that he can be a terrific goal scorer as well. He is very deft in his stick-work and has the ability to make things happen every time he is on the ice…. Purcell’s most glaring weakness his is lack of size and strength, which should increase with continued development. "

Semi-related question for anyone who knows:

What is the difference betwen RFA and UFA. I know UFA is “can deal with whoever they want” but what rules stop an RFA doing the same?

Also how many trades generally occur on trade day? Is this year higher or lower than previous years? Are we still expecting a flurry of activity?

by Sidicus on Mar 3, 2010 2:35 PM EST reply actions

UFA can sign with anyone, anywhere

RFA means that the guy is property of the team he was last signed with. He COULD be signed by another franchise, but there would be a necessity for compensation on the signing. Usually draft picks.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 3, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks John, so basically he can only sign with his current team unless another team is willing to compensate the players current team.

by Sidicus on Mar 3, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

Yes

Here’s a quirk though, an RFA may become a UFA if the team does not make a “Qualifying offer” to that player. Usually it’s just a 10 percent increase from the last season salary.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 3, 2010 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

That could quickly get confusing, but guess these are the reasons some offers go to arbitration in the off-season.

by Sidicus on Mar 3, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

There may be a late flurry (like in the next 10 min) and a few trades will show up after the deadline because they can’t make them public until AFTER the trade call, but it’s been slow. Most of what has moved so far this year has been third line, support guys. Nothing other than the Dion Phaneuf blockbuster and that trade with Cal/NYR for Joikinen et al. But I think a slow day was actually anticipated because so many teams are still “in the hunt”.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 3, 2010 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I am off now...

headed home and will check in after I get logged on at home to see if there were any late deals. I don’t expect any though. If nobody is here, I’ll talk to you guys tomorrow night for the Caps game.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...
