Tampa is also out-hitting the Pens 12-5; Downie & Thompson have three hits each. Pittsburgh is out-shooting the Lightning 23-17; Tanguay has three shots on goal. The Lightning have won 71% of the faceoffs – yes, that’s 71% – Lecavalier is a whopping 8-1 (89%) in the circle! Tampa is out-hitting the Pens 18-10; Thompson has five hits. Tanguay & Hedman have two turnovers each, five different players have a steal each, and three different players have two blocked shots each.

I always thought that
the way this was supposed to work was that the overall top seed had the “weakest” bracket.
Kansas’ bracket is brutal. Ohio State, Georgetown, Maryland, Michigan State, and Tennessee (who beat Kansas earlier this year) the 2-6 seeds? Yikes.

It's funny...I'm sitting here yelling at those stupid announcers every time the mispronounce Purcell's name
and that is only EVERY single time…

That’s how I would say it. Which is why I brought that up a couple of games ago. The way the Lightning announcers say it, which is probably the way Purcell himself says it so it’s right, really grates on me.

The only time I've used that tactic
was back on New Years’ Eve 2003, when the Lightning had a matinee against the Panthers.
It was a bit unusual hearing Mishkin call a Panthers goal a couple of seconds before the puck went in the net.

no but I'm sorry, the officials made sure the Lightning got no chance at a comeback.
4 straight penalties. The total missed tripping call where they wimped out and called both players at the end of the game, the screwed up call where Hedman got the extra 2 when it was clearly Fedotenko that high sticked Hedman? No, that was the officials.

They’ve overcome penalties before to win games. No, I think some of the blame rests on the players. They had control of this game until they let the Pens take it from them in the third.

Fleury made some good saves when the Lightning had that late PP.
But it never should have come to that. The Lightning didn’t even have a shot on goal until almost 7 minutes left in the period.

Stammer's had nothing for the past 2 games.
That is unusual for him this year. But he’s entitled to have a “bad game”. This is what happens this year when Marty and Stammer are not scoring. It’s hard to win with only 1 goal.

Teams are starting to arrange their defense to stop those two.
And when they do, it makes things really hard when there is no secondary scoring. That is part of the problem that needs to be addressed in the off season.

There’s no question that the officiating wasn’t the best, and that the Pens definitely got the benefit of the doubt. But the players needed to maintain what they were doing the first two periods. And they didn’t. They got discouraged and let the game slip away from them.

I’m sorry, but I will not change my opinion of the officials. Yes, the Lightning could have been a lot better in that 3rd period. But I will not absolve the officials from doing their part to contribute to it.
