Tampa Bay Lightning Game 68: versus the Pittsburgh Penguins
The Tampa Bay Lightning lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1.
The game started out well enough. They had picked up where they'd left off the last game against the Washington Capitals. Everything was running smoothly, and Antero Niittymaki was playing well.
Actually, Niittymaki played well the entire game. It really looks like he's back to form from earlier in the season. Without Niittymaki, the third period might've been very ugly.
There was some ugliness in the first when Brooks Orpik landed a hard but legal hit on Steven Stamkos. It knocked Stamkos down and hurled him into the boards with some velocity. It wasn't anywhere close enough to the boards to be considered boarding, thankfully.
But Steve Downie took exception to Stamkos being hit that way, and decided to hit Sidney Crosby. I've seen cleaner hits, but I don't think that Downie was trying to injure Crosby. He just wanted to send a message. Had the game turned into a route, then that likely would've come back up again.
As it was, there was a little messiness with Victor Hedman and Ruslan Fedotenko in the third. There was some all out fighting going on, but the officials decided to call it "roughing" despite punches being thrown. They also managed to give Hedman the high sticking penalty when he got Fedotenko's stick in the face. Pretty tricky of Hedman to have had that happen, huh?
Yes, the officiating was questionable once again.
However, despite the unequal penalty calls, you can't blame this loss entirely on the on-ice officials. The Lightning had had control of this game thru two periods. Yes, they had four penalties called on them in a row, but they've overcome penalty trouble before to win games.
The fact of the matter is, they let control of this game slip away to the Pens in the third when they had opportunities to win it. No shots for the first seven minutes of the third is unacceptable - even if they were killing off penalties. They still had 4-on-4 time to work with during that stretch, and they did nothing with it. Usually, the third period is their best period of the game, but not this time.
Vincent Lecavalier had flashes of brilliance, but he wasn't consistent. Martin St. Louis had a bit of an off night as well. And Stamkos was struggling to keep up with things at times. The defense did look pretty good again this game, however.
Perhaps they'll do better with the Phoenix Coyotes, who will be in town on Tuesday, 15 March. Game time is 7:30 pm Eastern. Let's hope they can pull themselves together by then.

Yeah. Sorry, I love you guys. I really do. But in no way can I condone that cheap shot by Downie.

I wasn’t condoning it; I just didn’t think he was out to injure Crosby.
There's nothing quite like the sound of a frozen puck hitting the glass. It makes me happy.

I really like the Lightning. In fact, they’re the main reason I even like the NHL. I was mostly just following the local minor league team, but the bolts SCF in 2004 really made me an NHL fan.
Now, about the cheap shot today. It’s good that you don’t condone it, but how was Downie not out to injure Crosby? He could’ve just hit him like Orpik did to Stamkos (which wasn’t late at all); instead, way after Crosby had passed the puck, he stuck his knee behind Crosby’s knee and pulled him underneath him. If that’s not intent to injure, I don’t know what is. Here’s the replay, watch Downie’s leg and what he does with it at about the 50 second mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E95gD79dWjA

What's getting not attention
is the hit that was laid on Stamkos that led to Downie’s “Cheap shot”.
9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

I know. I've read that from more than a few people. But just because someone goes after your star player doesn't mean you need to go after theirs.
Downie’s a big boy. He can go after the guy who hit Stamkos. There’s no need to go after Crosby. That’s schoolyard BS.

unfortunately in the NHL there is often retaliation on the other team’s stars. I agree with Cassie that I don’t think Downie was trying to hurt Crosby, he hit him late and then fell awkwardly on his leg.
It was nice to see Stamkos lay out Cooke at the end of the game…..

Very dissapointed in the crowd
I was at the game and would say it was 60/40 Pens fans and the Lightning fans that were there were not very into the game. For a team that (despite it’s recent poor play) is still in the playoff hunt you would think there would be more local fan support.

That was clearly an effort to hurt Crosby.
Period.
Which B's team is this?
Does anyone know if Lecavalier called out Downie just like he called out Cooke? Or is he too much of a coward to do that?
maybe you can take that crap back to the Pens blogs. It ain't welcome here.
I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...
