Practice

Stamkos is on ice for Practice, Erik Erlendsson says he looks OK to play but looks can certainly be deceiving.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

And just because he’s skating warmups doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll play in the game, either.

Bugsy out, Ohlie out, Stammer banged up, Marty banged up…Not much left besides Vinny…. Could make for some interesting line combinations.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

You know

…Ashton and Panik were assigned to Norfolk. Wouldn’t it be odd if they got called up to Tampa (are they even able to?)

Don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to. No rule that I know prohibits it. Carter has already signed his rookie contract. Maybe Panik can’t unless he signs, but that would be a formality, wouldn’t it?

That might be a question best asked of Erik Erlendsson or somebody with a bit more inside information. I honestly don’t know the answer to that one. It would be interesting anyway.

I used to do that too. Well, we received e-mail from one of the deputy chiefs the other day that the First 48 will begin filming in Charlotte this spring. Apparently they’ve already met with production staff. They will have 2 videographers that will be embedded with the homicide unit for 1 yr and will follow all homicides that happen in Charlotte. Now I gotta be sure and stay the heck out of the way of the cameras so my ugly mug don’t wind up on TV….

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 16, 2010 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Well of all of that list, I’d make Fozzie and Lundin a priority. Veilleux is a good checking line player. The rest…meh..

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 16, 2010 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Beilleux hasn't really impressed me

Lundin is a priority, Fozzie as well. Niittymaki is a potential tank trap. Sign him long term and stunt development OR risk yourself to having to deal with his previous hip injuries resurfacing.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 16, 2010 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t have a problem with the Lightning resigning him, but not long term. I actually expect Smitty to be traded.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 16, 2010 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

But who would want him?

It’s like talking Tanguay — the fans crap on him left and right and expect him traded. Want him traded. NEED him traded and keep shit-talking about him.

Same thing with Smith. How does he have value in trade if no one on his own team wants him? He’ll be here until his contract expires after next season.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 16, 2010 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Then he's going to be an expensive backup. He'd have a heck of a time regaining #1

So does the team resign Frank and go with the same tandem as this year? Or let Niitty go and take chances with Tic or…who? make a trade? What if Tokarski blows up next year and Smitty is all there is? Then what? Lots of questions…. scary answers…

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 16, 2010 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

There are four netminders in the Bolts system

Five if you count another prospect in the KHL who was never signed. Forget his name but he has been a stats leader in Russia for years.

Ramo (in KHL now, but Lightning property), Tokarski, Janus and Zador (the other guy has never played in North America so I don’t list him as a legit candidate). It’s not just a qustion of Tokarski or re-signing Niitty.

And every young goalie needs to breka into the NHL at some point.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 16, 2010 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I know about the other ones, but I’m going on the assumption that Tokarski is the closest to “NHL ready” of any of the minor league guys. Bringing back Ramo is an option. He has had a good year in Russia and he wants to return to the States. I’m just not sure any of the other minor league kids is anywhere near ready to take over the Lightning net.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 16, 2010 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

That will depend entirely upon who the new CEO hires as GM, I think.

by Cassie McClellan on Mar 16, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Will there be a new GM? And if there is, will Tocchet survive as head coach, since he does have 1 more year on his contract?

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 16, 2010 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Tocchet's Walz tantrum and the team's mediocrity has sealed his fate

New leadership will want to be sold on Lawton… And Lawton will have to sell himself to new leadership… So anyone’s guess there.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 16, 2010 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Lawton doesn’t have a great reputation among the GMs in the league – they find him difficult. So I would think that he’s gone. It would expect it to be almost entirely new leadership from top to bottom.

Raw Charge, an SBN Tampa Bay Lightning community.

by Cassie McClellan on Mar 16, 2010 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

That whole Wes Walz mess was a total cluster...

Lawton handled it badly and Tocchet acted like an angry 8 yr old that had his favorite toy taken away from him after the fact. Neither one impressed me on that one.

by John Fontana on Mar 16, 2010 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean...

You don’t want a yes-man coach but temper tantrums from a head coach like this just won’t do it. Sends a bad message to the players.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 16, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

That one still has me scratching my head… I wonder if he’s being blocked not because he was Walz’ replacement, but Wilson’s… just my opinion

I got a good deal on those boys. The scouts said they showed a lot of promise. - Joe McGrath

by Coldrice on Mar 16, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think so.

I think it’s just a feud between Tocchet and Lawton. Lawton fired a very good friend of Tocchet’s (Walz) and put one of HIS good friends (Johnson) in place. Tocchet is pissed because Lawton undercut him, so he’s just not going to give the new guy a chance. That is a mistake.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 16, 2010 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

No… I meant now. Agree with you up to Walz’s situation but I think the greater goal was Wilson. Johnson’s a youth guy, but he’s worked primarily with the D in Norfolk.

I got a good deal on those boys. The scouts said they showed a lot of promise. - Joe McGrath

by Coldrice on Mar 16, 2010 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know...maybe

Wilson was supposed to be the end all of defensive coaches, if talk this past summer was to be believed, but I have not been impressed at all. There are a lot of times when it doesn’t appear the D has any kind of system. Sometimes they look kinda lost…

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 16, 2010 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

The defense has consistently been the worst part of the team all season.

by Cassie McClellan on Mar 16, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

And that is part of the problem with the goaltending too… There have been any number of games this season where Smitty and Frank both have been left to fend for themselves. Hung out to dry is a mild way of describing it…

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 16, 2010 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly… just to clarify what I mean… IMO Lawton saw how hot the Ad’s were and of course Johnson being his guy… wanted to bring him up. We had to have something of equal value from a coaching standpoint going back and I’d bet my Lemieux rookie card Lawton thought Wes would go to Norfolk. Once done, then Wilson gets the boot and Johnson takes over the D.

Now that Wes told him to shove it, and thus given the boot, Tocc wants no intrusion from a spy and so Johnson rots. To be honest, if they had to move a coaching body to Norfolk, Lawton should have sold the proposition in February instead of just doing it. Just one of those weird conspiracy theories I’ve pondered because one thing is certain… both squads will suffer for his decision (Lawton)

I got a good deal on those boys. The scouts said they showed a lot of promise. - Joe McGrath

by Coldrice on Mar 16, 2010 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

At this point, it doesn’t even matter what Lawton or Tocchet does. Typically with new ownership comes housecleaning, and I’m sure this time won’t be any exception. They’re both gone and they know it – and they’ve known it since February. So they’re really not hurting anyone but themselves when it comes to future job opportunities.

There's nothing quite like the sound of a frozen puck hitting the glass. It makes me happy.

Lame duck coach and GM.

My sincere hope at this point is that Vinik puts a really good CEO in place quickly and they get the GM and coach issues worked out in time for the NEW GM to do something in the FA market this summer.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by Tina Robinson on Mar 16, 2010 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Sounds like a likely scenario. Wes saying no thanks to Norfolk threw a monkey wrench into Lawton’s plans. At this point both teams have already suffered.

After one, Phoenix leads 2-0.

The Lightning are being out-shot 13-8; eight different players have a shot each. They are rocking the faceoff circle, tho, winning 77% of them; three players have won all of their faceoffs so far. Hits are even at five each; five different Lightning players have a hit each. Four different players have a turnover each, three different players have a steal, and five different players have a blocked shot each.

It’s very balanced, but it’s not getting them very far. Someone needs to step up and lead the way.

After two, Phoenix leads 2-1. The lone Lightning goal was scored by Fedoruk.

Tampa Bay now leads in shots 21-19; Lecavalier & Foster have three shots each. Faceoffs are still going strong with them having won 67% of them; Thompson is 7-2 (78%). They’re being out-hit 11-10; Foster & Thompson each have two hits. Parrish has two turnovers, Szczechura has two steals, and eight different players have a blocked shot each.

I noticed that she had a following of the Seattle clubs (Seahawks, Sounders, etc) and thought maybe she could offer her thoughts on Tod Leiweke

by Coldrice on Mar 16, 2010 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Leiweke is brilliant

but also in charge of both the Seahawks, and the business arm of the Sounders. This is no small feat, and he did it so well that he was the Puget Sound sports executive of the year.

On the Sounders side of thing he’s taken advantage of the perfect storm and taken an expansion team and turned it into gold. His treating this “minor league” sport as the real deal means that they have good TV/radio ratings, are the 50th most attended club in the world and will exceed their inaugural season by at least 5,000 (moving them to about 40th in the world).

For the Seahawks he is currently overseeing the post-Holmgren era as they transition to Pete Carroll. I don’t follow them as much, but he is the senior exec for an NFL side and the best launch of an expansion team of all time. I wouldn’t expect him to leave Vulcan, even though his first sport is hockey.

by Dani Toth on Mar 16, 2010 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

And here is a prime example of why I hate the NHL point system

so Phoenix won their 43rd game of the season tonight. Overall, they’re 43-27, 43-22-5 in NHL terms (91 points).

The Sharks are getting crushed in Dallas tonight. 4-0 late in the 2nd period. Odds are they’re going to lose that game. Assuming they do, they’ll be 43-26, but in NHL terms, they’re 43-16-10, giving them 96 points.

In essence, the Sharks are being rewarded in the Pacific Division because they’ve been more adept at losing games in OT/Shootouts.

Stuff like this annoys me.

by FloridaownsFSU on Mar 16, 2010 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

Right

The Bolts mediocrity was hidden by the points system. And Dallas is still breathing (are tehy) with contention because of the point system and being good with OT/Shootout losses.

If an Eastern Conference example is desired

it is all but a guarantee that the 8 seed will lose more than 41 games this year.

Bruins: 31-38
Rangers: 31-39
Lightning: 28-41
Thrashers: 29-40

Unless, of course, the Lightning have a 13-0 finish to the season in them…

by FloridaownsFSU on Mar 16, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Colorado/St. Louis

intriguing game. 4-3 Colorado mid-way through the 3rd.

The Blues have one of the best road records in the league, yet have had an incredible inability to win home games this year. On the bright side, they’ve won 3 straight at home, so that might be changing.
