Loved Ryan Miller at the Olympics on Team USA, but now that we’re back in the NHL, let’s hope that he’s not playing so well, ’kay? :o)

I never would've guessed

Penguins/Bruins tonight, and at the 1:58 mark of the first, Matt Cooke got into it with Shawn Thornton.

1-0 Pittsburgh in that game.

It was neat

Especially since I hadn’t posted in about a month. But I decided it was probably a good move career-wise. I mean, if James O’Brien can turn CLTS into a paying gig at NBC, why can’t I potentially parlay this in the future?

Looking forward to seeing your contribution, though.

Yeah, I need to start thinking up things to write about now….

So you’re doing the game recaps, huh? Good luck! I’m of the opinion that if people want to read an official recap, they can do that elsewhere. I’m going to just give them my impressions of the game. That’s how I do things.

You should contact the Sens PR guy about getting on the media email list, by the way.

The Lightning will send us post game notes and stuff, so that’s why I mention getting on their media email list. And then we link to the TSN game recap at the end of our recap, so I don’t really want to repeat what’s there, you know? I just give people my take and call it good. :o)

Yeah, it helps me set the tone for the recap… I do more technical writing instead of feelings but I mean… I find something to latch on to much like the beat writers do. Something I see. Some overall theme… Without the fluff or the dry “joke” references that you can’t see in the context of the quote that the beat guys supply.

Yeah, playoffs are starting tomorrow and apparently he’s playing a full time defence shift. The coach likes how he can skate the puck out of the zone better than almost anyone. Slash coach is a dick and won’t give him the first line minutes.

Vinny can play defense and has covered for the defense when they’ve been out of position. And then Fedorov transitioned into doing playing defense as he got older, tho he was also able to help out the defense before that as well. I think it’s a great skill for a center to have, actually. So good for him that he can do that. Most forwards can’t skate backwards for more than three seconds.

After one period – yes, only one – the Sabres are up 3-0 over the Lightning.

Tampa Bay is being out-shot 14-4; four different players have a shot each. Faceoffs are a dismal 36%; both Lecavalier & Stamkos are 1-4 (20%). The Lightning are being out-hit 6-4; four different players have a hit each. St. Louis & Hedman have a turnover each, Downie has the lone steal, and Hedman has two blocked shots.

Lots of energy, and not a lot else. Gotta shoot to score, you know.

by Cassie McClellan on Mar 18, 2010 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

This FAIL started in January

When the Lightning couldn’t win either of the back-to-back games against the Florida Panthers, you knew this team lacked the killer mentality to raise their game when they needed to the most. They have some strength in this category but they only show it when they face certain opponents.

In general they are just weak with it…. They could have nailed down a playoff spot before the Olympics but instead crashed and burned playing like-tiered opponents in Boston, and both New York teams.

Is this a reflection on coaching or Vinny and Marty’s leadership? To lack the mentality that it’s vital to win specific games because of their importance in the standings… That’s just really a factor that has done them in this season.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 18, 2010 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

you're right on.

those losses showed that this team just doesn’t have the extra gear needed for playoff hockey. The same thing with the loss to the Penguins last weekend. As big of a fan of Lecavalier as I am, he should never have been named the captain.

Marty seems to be the leader of this team and should be wearing the “c”, but how do you take it from Vinny without damaging his confidence?

You would think Tocchet would be the perfect coach to instill the hard nosed attitude that teams need, but for some reason it’s just not translating. Maybe they need to bring in a veteran leader a la Andreychuck in the off-season?

by Lightningfan7609 on Mar 18, 2010 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Cassie saw it like this: Tocchet is still seen as a player in some of the guys eyes… And he comes off as such. He’s likeable. He’s not the boss, he’s a peer. That’s not going to cut it with a squad this mixed with young and older players.

To change the captaincy, you would need to chantge coaches first – give a reason. You could do it with a Totorella type attitude of “I could give a shit” and just chang eit OR you could take the two players into a conference and discuss things.

They don’t need an Andreychuck. They need to realize they are the Andreychuk on this squad now. It’s their team.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 18, 2010 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

After I posted my comment I was thinking that tocchet still has the “player” mindset. It’s one of the drawbacks of going straight to a NHL bench after retiring. Maybe if he had spent more time as an assistant or in the minors coaching he would relize that he’s the boss now.

I hate comparing sports to the corporate world, but I remember when I went from being a sales rep to being a sales manager. I thought I was still one of the “boys” and I wasn’t. Needless to say I was a horrible manager….

by Lightningfan7609 on Mar 18, 2010 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

The other thing to consider is who they apprentice under. Gretzky was a bad coach – there’s no getting around that. Tocchet did not learn much from him and it shows. If he’d worked under Lemaire or another established coach, then it might’ve been an entirely different story.

There's nothing quite like the sound of a frozen puck hitting the glass. It makes me happy.

by Cassie McClellan on Mar 18, 2010 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

don’t forget he also had melrose as a boss.

by Lightningfan7609 on Mar 18, 2010 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point. Melrose who was not even aware of the need to prepare his players for the season or adjust his own coaching style for the new NHL…

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 18, 2010 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

The Bolts are missing Malone

I know he hasn’t scored in what seems like a season, but having him out of the lineup is showing on the powerplay. Hopefully, his mysterious upper body injury heals along with his knee in the next two weeks.

by Lightningfan7609 on Mar 18, 2010 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

New!

I’m new here but i’ve been a huge fan of the Lightning for many years and have been reading this blog basically since it started. All I can say after watching this abysmal period of hockey is that the Lightning really, really, really (yes really) need to get rid of Meszaros. Sincerely. He is terrible for us; I would trade him for just about anyone at this point. Also, a little bit of passion wouldn’t hurt these players. Then again, a lot of that falls on the coach, and our head coach clearly would rather be best friends with the players than be the coach that molds them into competitors (re: John Tortorella). They need to pick it up fast and soon. If not this franchise will be losing it’s fan base, it’s players, and it’s team. Optimism only gets you so far… this is reality.

Tampa Bay Lightning: Pick it up. That’s all for now…

by Cassie McClellan on Mar 18, 2010 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I couldn’t agree more on Meszaros, but with that contract he’s too expensive to buy out or convince another team to take on.

Despite the abysmal stretch (you picked the right word to describe it) I am still optimisitc about the team. Compare this years team to last year’s and they’re 100% better. The maturation of Stamkos, Lundin, Smaby and even Downie has been great to watch.

The big question for next season will be goaltending (I think it will be Smith and Tokarski), but if they continue to improve they will be a playoff team.

by Lightningfan7609 on Mar 18, 2010 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm writing about Meszaros tonight.

Do you feel like he’s regressed this year?

by Ryan Classic on Mar 18, 2010 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

He has regressed. When he was brought over he was supposed to be what Kurtis Foster is – not Mike McBain.

by Lightningfan7609 on Mar 18, 2010 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Just as I thought. Now I don't have to change wording.

Meszaros has regressed every season since his rookie year.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 18, 2010 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

no they’re not. I’m just saying Meszaros was supposed to have the big shot on the power play and provide some offense.

by Lightningfan7609 on Mar 18, 2010 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

too much money, too soon? At this point I would take Sergei Gusev over him. Man there was a stretch of great defensemen in tampa weren’t there?

by Lightningfan7609 on Mar 18, 2010 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Too much money too soon is why Ottawa traded him

Safe to say that Kuba/Picard were just as bad in the end. Kuba had an amazing stretch to start last season and has been mediocre-to-bad ever since.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 18, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Remember when we all thought the 5-4 loss against Boston

where the Lightning nearly overcame the whole 5 goal deficit could’ve been a big lesson for this team, and help them further their playoff push?

I always remember the lines being

Marty-Vinny-Feds and Modin-Richards-Stillman.

Can’t really gauge how much changing of the lines there may have been back then, seeing as how it was a long time before Tocchet came along.

by FloridaownsFSU on Mar 18, 2010 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Stillman replaced Prospal as a LW on the squad, Fedotenko is a RW.

Modin – Richards – Marty was one of the best lines in this teams history… They have an odd nickname for it over at Boltprospects.com — Torts Binky. It was his safeety line because they could do anything.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 18, 2010 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

it’s my recollection that torts shifted lines, but only to double shift marty or vinny. Or to punish a player who wasn’t performing.

by Lightningfan7609 on Mar 18, 2010 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

It was Affy and Dingman who did more shifting than anyone. Tim Taylr and Andreychuck were paired together and Affy spent time on the 3rd and fourth lines…

Modin/Richards/Marty was locked in, and so was Corey/Vinny/Feds

Michael Leighton suffered a severe ankle sprain that will keep him out the next 8-10 weeks. Seeing as how Emery is already done and Leighton was doing as admirable job as he could…is it fair to say Philly’s pretty much dead as far as being a legitimate threat in the playoffs?

I can’t anticipate Brian Boucher having another ridiculous playoff tear in him…

One nice thing about this year

is that they were able to fill the roster from within the organization when injuries hit. They didn’t have to trade or sign subpar players like Malik or Kraijek. It shows that they are building depth. Now if only they could develop a scorer from within….

Blues/Rangers

3-2 Blues in the 3rd. The Rangers are 3 points out of the playoffs in the East (plus Boston has a game in hand), and one of the biggest reasons for that is because of their abysmal home record (15-22, or, to put it in NHL-correct terms, 15-16-6). Their road record is fine and would be more than good enough to get them into the playoffs if their home record was remotely good.

Curiously, the team visiting MSG tonight can attest to that. The Blues have 20 road wins this year, yet their record at home this year is 12-22.

Mind-boggling.

Tampa Bay is still being out-shot, now 23-16; Lecavalier has six shots on goal (five of those came in the second). Faceoffs are still miserable with the Lightning winning only 35%; Stamkos is 2-9 (18%). They’re still being out-hit 10-7; Meszaros has two hits. Hedman has two turnovers, Veilleux two steals, and Walker three blocked shots.

Also to re-iterate my expectations of the Bolts.

I do not expec them to win the cup this year, and making the playoffs would be nice. All I ask is they finish the season ahead of the Islanders…

As a follow-up on the scores tonight

I’d like to further my point about abysmal teams being in the playoff race.

In the East:

8) Boston: 31-27-12 (31-39)
9) NY Rangers: 31-31-9 (31-40)
10) Atlanta: 30-29-11 (31-40)
11) Tampa Bay: 28-30-12 (28-42) (Yes, I’m operating under the presumption they lose)
12) Florida: 28-30-10 (28-40)
13) Carolina: 29-33-8 (29-41)

Whichever of these teams makes the playoffs (probably Boston) is going to get white-washed by Washington in round 1.

To add a useless recollection

that goal reminds me of when the Thrashers piled it on late against Lightning in the season finale of 2007-08.

Thrashers had gotten an empty-netter to make it 3-1, and Mark Recchi tacked on another goal in the final 30 seconds after Smitty had already gone back in net.

They can head to Toronto

face a hapless Leafs team and lose in OT, and go to Washington the next night and beat the league’s best team.

In all seriousness though, the last 4 games against Washington, the Bolts are 2-2, with both losses being one goal losses in Washington, games that were decided in the latter half of the 3rd period. They haven’t been the Capitals favorite punching bag this year.
