Evening all

Here’s to hope the lads can cap off a perfect sporting Saturday and make me 4 for 4!

Drifting slowly, lower and lower, until we reach the front row in Los Angeles come June...

It’s on you, then, Thierry! No pressure, man. ;o)

Survey

(repeated from the preview comments):

I need to start bugging every Raw Charge reader (reader – not member – so if you read the site and don’t participate, this implies you too) about a survey that SB Nation has launched:

http://www.rawcharge.com/2010/3/19/1381765/sb-nation-survey-+-chance-to

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 20, 2010 7:09 PM EDT reply actions

Survey completed.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by TB_hockey_fan on Mar 20, 2010 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I hate surveys that force me to answer race, income, etc.

Yeah, sorry, I really don’t like being told YOU MUST ANSWER that. My salary is my business.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 20, 2010 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

At least it’s common for you to convert between currencies….. so how much is (either) dollar raking out of the pound these days!?

Drifting slowly, lower and lower, until we reach the front row in Los Angeles come June...

I live in the UK

It asked for annual salary in dollars, I get paid in pounds sterling

I’m not really fond of those questions either, but who’s to say the participants actually tell the truth? Not sure what relevance those questions have. Demographics are meaningless with a survey like that and no way to verify answers.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by TB_hockey_fan on Mar 20, 2010 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Salary got really invasive / annoying. This is the first time they have done this and… well, it’s a lot of FAIL but I still gotta ask people to participate

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 20, 2010 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I got part way through and said, no, this is none of their business

Sorry, but there’s a line that gets crossed there. And just because I’m white/unmarried/no kids doesn’t mean I particularly want to share all of that.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 20, 2010 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

As someone who’s used demographics data for mapping purposes, that stuff comes in pretty handy. Tho I don’t like answering that kind of stuff myself, either. But I understand the usefulness of it.

McGinn’s ready for the NHL. He plays on the third line when he’s there.

by TB_hockey_fan on Mar 20, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

McGinn's all heart

He’s exactly the type of player you want on your team. He also had the same junior coach as Zeke, and while Zeke was captain, McGinn wore an A. Incidentally, his linemate in the AHL (and last week in the NHL) wore the C when playing junior with McGinn.

67’s pride, yo.

I have a bobblehead of the coach :D

Doesn’t seem to be a tactic Tocchet likes to employ. Not sure why, there’s nothing like lighting a firecracker under a players arse to get him going, but hey ho, it’s the enigma called Rick Tocchet, so it’s not surprising

He looked lost out there

The difference between NHL and AHL linemates is crazy. He couldn’t get smooth passes and nobody could make use of the plays he’d make. I swear he got over 25:00 ice time, though. For all the talk of him playing defence, he was the top centre. Won an insane amount of faceoffs.

Clearly a stride above everyone else. Definitely their best player, even if he got no points.

Also, I think Brandon Segal’s brother is the goalie in Vancouver now.

I seriously hope to see him full time in Tampa next season.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by TB_hockey_fan on Mar 20, 2010 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Pretty much, yep

He couldn’t do a quick stop and turn around as well as most others, but he was definitely their best and fastest skater. I was trying to not be biased, but he really was better. The Giants’ font has 18 and 19 looking almost the same, even up close, but you could tell when Killer (19) was on the ice just by watching him skate.

He had quite a few takeaways. Also far better at keeping the puck in the zone than anyone else.

Not that Kamloops put up much of a fight, despite the 4-3 OT score. I swear they had zero shots on goal from the 10:00 mark of the second period onward. They had 0 shots in the 3rd period and 0 in the 33 seconds of overtime.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 20, 2010 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Ouch! Sounds like a couple of the Bolts games this season...

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

by TB_hockey_fan on Mar 20, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

This was something else. I've never seen anything like it.

Officiating was also terrible.

I’m not kidding about the last 30 minutes. I cannot remember when they got their 14th shot on goal, but it wasn’t even close to being a competitive game. The Blazers capitalized on a few misplays in the first period and the Giants goalie was, uh, awful. Hopefully he’ll be better tonight. The rest of the game the Blazers just collapsed in front of their goalie and hung on. Shot count was 39-14 (I think). Attempted shots were probably more like 95-25.

by Ryan Classic on Mar 20, 2010 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Saw Alix bring that up. It’s cool. Keith’s been covering / watching / attending stuff too… Hitmen are in the playoffs too, of course, and MJ got the best of them (or was that the refs?) the other night.

That's free agency

See, I’m looking long term here. The Bolts have soem itneresting prospects in Ashton, in Panik, in Hutchings… Wing, wing, center. They need skilled depth. They coudl use a two-way forward that is above scrappy…

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

I would have no problem with them shopping the pick

unless there’s just someone available that knocks everyone’s socks off, and I don’t think there are many of those… package with a goalie prospect or someone else and get a good 2 way forward for the third line to go along with Thompson (if he’s resigned, and I hope he is).

Then why have the draft at all

Lets trade away every pick for guys to help the roster now!

The problem with THAT is you have to have people at all levels and all positions…. And the Lightning are thin, everywhere.

9:12. Lights out. Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Mar 20, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Except at goalie.

They’ve got like what, 6 in the pipeline? Can’t play all of them. Something has to give. May as well see if a decent player can be had for one of them.

The Lightning are out-shooting the Caps 13-4; Lecavalier has three shots. Faceoffs are 50-50; Thompson is 4-0 (100%). They’re being out-hit 8-4; four different players have a hit each. Bochenski has two turnovers, Downie has the lone steal, and Lecavalier & Meszaros each have a blocked shot.

Niitty’s let in two goals on four shots…?

Cal also made it out of the first round

and I’m intrigued by their matchup with Duke. The rest of the Pac-10 sucks, but Washington has gotten things going lately (although I had Marquette beating them, and Marquette beating New Mexico today), and Cal was the consensus “top team” in that conference all year.

I don’t think they beat Duke, but that won’t be an easy matchup at all for Duke. Duke can burn themselves out with Cal before losing to A&M in a few days.

I don’t know whether the fact that they both have been calling Caps games for some time and that Laughlin played for DC pretty recently (well, mid to late 90s) plays into that.

After two, the score stays the same – but the feistiness has jumped up.

The Lightning are still out-shooting the Caps 26-13 now; Lecavalier has seven shots. The faceoffs have flipped strong into the Bolts favor, now winning 63% of them; Thompson is 8-0 (100%). Tampa is now also out-hitting the Caps 14-11; three different players have two hits each. Three players have two turnovers each, three players have one steal each, and five different players have a blocked shot each.

Across the league

Well, this is surprising. The Blues are on the road, and they are doing well for themselves. Up 1-0 on New Jersey late in the third period. As I noted the other night, the Blues have 21 wins on the road after beating the Rangers. A half-decent home record would have them as a virtual shoe-in for the playoffs. Alas, that home record holds them back. But hey, if they make the playoffs, at least they know they’ll be on the road more than they’ll be at home.

Sens are free-falling ever since their long win streak (can’t remember how long it was, 11 games?). Spezza had a hat trick today, and they still lost in Dallas. With Buffalo leading the Panthers in Sunrise, it looks pretty likely that Buffalo will hold onto win the Northeast Division.

Thrashers up 4-2 vs. Philly. Not like either team will do anything if they make the playoffs anyway.

Oh, and the puck has dropped in Phoenix for the Blackhawks/Coyotes game. Those two meet twice in the next 4 days, and will be a great opportunity for Phoenix to show whether they are truly among the league’s best or not. With the Sharks struggling, could be an excellent chance for Phoenix to steal that division. 3 points difference after the Sharks lost in Calgary last night.

Oh, and the pesky Canes beat the Penguins in OT today. Back to back OT wins over Washington and Pittsburgh. That isn’t easy to do, and they just had a back-to-back of Pittsburgh/Washington a week or so ago.

by FloridaownsFSU on Mar 20, 2010 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

Alas

they probably blew their wad when they lost to Boston earlier this week.

Blues win 1-0.

22-11-4 on the road.

4 points behind Detroit, and Detroit has a game in hand.

Thrashers win 5-2

those gritty, gutty, “We-don’t-need-Ilya” Thrashers are 1 point out of the playoffs.

This is also what happens when you face a team that is down to it’s third string goaltender for the rest of the season. Not that Philly stood a chance with Michael Leighton as it’s starter anyway.

Boucher is back in the fold. Why not just bring in someone like Cechmanek or Esche and finish the flashback to early 2000’s Flyers goalies?

by FloridaownsFSU on Mar 20, 2010 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Sabres win 3-1 over Florida

so they really should have that division on auto-drive now. Closest anyone can be after tonight is 6 points, and that’s if Montreal wins their shootout vs. Toronto.

Scrub that, actually

Thanks to tie-breakers, we’re now 28th (Carolina and the Isles have same points but more wins, we had a game in hand which we’ve since lost)

And I am going to have to bow out early tonight folks.

I got a couple of things to do then it’s bed time for me! Good night all! See y’all tomorrow evening.

I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

There's nothing quite like the sound of a frozen puck hitting the glass. It makes me happy.
