The way forward: Tocchet, Lawton relieved of duties in Tampa

Jeffrey Vinik

Let me take the glut of remarks from Jeffrey Vinik's letter:

Effective immediately, I have decided to replace both Brian Lawton as General Manager and Rick Tocchet as Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning.....

As you know, our search for a new CEO is well underway. I'm happy to announce that we have received quite a few resumes. We are in the process of interviewing a number of very highly qualified candidates.

Starting today, we will begin our search for a new GM. The new CEO will hire the new GM. It will then be the responsibility of the new GM to hire the new Head Coach. We plan to have this exciting hiring process all wrapped up prior to the NHL Draft.

No matter what you thought Jeff Vinik should do with Rick Tocchet and Brian Lawton, the ultimate decree has been passed down and go from there.

The writing had been on the wall that Lawton may not be back for a while, so that should not be surprising.  Neither should Tocchet's dismissal.  You see, while everyone can mention the great work he's had done with Steve Downie and Steven Stamkos, there are 21 other roster spots with players.  Can we honestly say anyone improved under Tocchet?  That the defense improved after a revamp from last season?  That  he effectively used what he had at his disposal in a consistent fashion?

As Vinik himself said in the quoted text from his letter, the search is now on for a new GM and head coach.  We move forward.  Who is available in each of these empty slots and what they bring to the team will ultimately guide the direction of the franchise - on ice and off - for the foreseeable future.

We're not going to speculate (yet) about coaching...  And while nostalgia might suggest Jay Feaster is the ideal candidate for General Manager, the oft-mentioned "decade of poor drafting" by the team is partly under his watch.

This will be a process.  It may not play out for media spectacle like it would in other markets, but it will be a deliberate process.

And so we move forward...

Does this mean Lawton goes back to being an agent? He gave up a pretty successful group at Octagon to take on a position with Bolts and OK Hockey.

Actually Lawton had done some time in Vancouver in the front office before taking over the GM capacity in Tampa Bay. He had wanted to become a GM.

Great question if he goes back or not. I think his agent connections are what helped him out a ton during free-agency in 2009.

Lawton just did an interview on Sportsnet where he pretty much blamed everybody else for the team’s problems. He said he has really only had control over the team for 9 months because of Barrie and Koules and he implied that Tocchet was a bad coach. He also didn’t deny trying to fire Tocchet earlier in the year, he just said he didn’t have the authority to that and he wished that he would have been able to choose his own coach.

Also, according to Nick Kypreos, Doug MacLean is being considered for GM or some other management job. There is also some talk in Toronto that Tampa may look at Dave Nonis.

Go BRUINS!!!

Doug MacLean! That would be absolutely horrible. The guy turned one Stanley Cup Final run into a 15 year career. Did you see what he accomplished in Columbus with a blank checkbook? Absolutely nothing. Funny and insightful commentator on Sportsnet, but it ends there imo.

Tocchet as coach

I, having never played the game (but plenty of other team sports), have had a hard time deciding how much an NHL coach really has to do with the Wins and Losses of a team. I’ve decided that there are a few, exceptional coaches that DO have a ton to do with their team’s successes (Ruff, Pat Burns, Bowman, maybe Crawford) but beyond that, NHL coaches instill a “system” and the players he has either are able to run it or not. They either buy into or not. My best guess is that an NHL coach can be successful if he can motivate his players day in, and day out. Plain and simple. Of course, then I ask myself, why would an NHLer need to be motivated in the first place? Are they not “professionals.” So then I’m back to square one with regards to whether a coach really matters that much any way.

I’m thinking that the GM and his scouts and assistants are the reason why a team succeeds or doesn’t. How many times has Lamoriello fired a coach down the stretch and the Devs go on to success?

Stock a team with players who work hard, play solid D, opportunistically score a goal and hire a coach to ride herd over it, that’s it.

Which B's team is this?

Meant to add,

From the games that I saw the Bolts play (against the Bruins, the team I watch) they looked pretty motivated and played with a bit of passion, so, I’m not sure Tocchet was to blame.

From what I understand, Tocchet didn’t really have much in way of a system. And that was the problem.

If you’re a Bruins fan, you should be well aware of a very recent and great example of how much coaching and systems matter. Just compare the Bruins under Lewis and Julien. Should be visible both in style of play and win/loss.

There are plenty of other examples. Phoenix with Gretzky vs. Phoenix with Tippett is something from this year. Or to go with a Bolts-related example, the complete turnaround in the Rangers’ style of play under Torts compared to Renney despite mostly the same lineup.

Welcome Mr. Vinik!

I agree with both moves. I can’t say Feaster was a perfect GM, but our drafts were horrible under his watch.

Brad, any way I can view the interview on the web?

Drafts were horrible under Feaster

While Lawton ultimately oversaw one.

Hope this ends well for you guys

You guys deserve better stewards, top-down. Gotta like how Vinik has handled Step 1, at least. (A disciplined, systematic owner who doesn’t see himself as god’s gift to hockey? That just might work!)

And how many copies of their resumes do you bet Feaster and Button have been sending in each day?

If we only...

Could find a defensive minded, puck-possesion coach!
Damn, would i like to see the Bolts play a Wild-mixed-with-Red Wings- kind of game..

Ah hell.. Who am i kidding.

And let's not go with the Feaster-idea.

I really didn’t like some of the moves he made late in his tenure. I’d prefer the idea of moving forward, not looking back.

Right

I saw Feater as scrambling to cover his ass after John Grahame didn’t pan out… and nothign worked out quite right. Every time he thought he had it corrected, he made things worse.

But that’s that. Past. Happened. Lets move forward and find the right guy for the gig… After we find his boss (the CEO)…

Anyone REALLy not sure Tocchet was to blame and considers themselves hockey fans? A 36% coach, admitted felon, clueless as to Xs and Os. Did not have the rerspect of amost all the players. If you think he was a good coach, try holding your breath until he’s offered another NHL coaching job. Hope you left DNR instructions.

I totally called Tocchet as being the problem a year ago. I’d wanted to write up a really scathing post last April, but everyone told me to give him another year and see how things went for him after a full training camp. So I kept quiet publicly. I never really had any faith in him as a coach. I have nothing against him as a person, but I knew he wasn’t a good fit with the Lightning.

Does This Mean...

Lawton’s wife is looking for a new job as well?

by Lightningfan7609 on Apr 12, 2010 6:46 PM EDT reply actions

I saw nothing abotu Angelina leavign the team. This was just the team front office / management. If they make executive changes, that is still forthcoming.

Relevant, good question though.
