Media jump-starts GM Search for Lightning
Erik Erlendsson at the Tampa Tribune has a list of potential general manager candidates for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Of course, if you go elsewhere, you'll hear that it's a done deal that the Minnesota Wild's former brainstrust would be taking over in Tampa.
Some of the facts that need to be taken into thought is that no GM will be hired until their is a CEO in place. It's why I suggested earlier today that the CEO will ultimately guide the direction of the club. It's all moot until we know who the new CEO is.
Of course, that does not stop the speculation of the next GM for the Lightning, or the next head coach for the squad either. And the truth is that the Bolts need to get things in order by late June in time to prepare for the draft and NHL free agency. To go into either event with a makeshift front office could spell disaster for the Lightning off-season.
Names like Dave Nonis, Steve Yzerman, and even former Lightning GM Jay Feaster have their names in the mix. More names will come to light in the coming days and weeks - especially after a CEO is penciled in.
Right now it's just anyone's guess who will be the next steward of Lightning roster.

Knowing nothing about the candidates
I wouldn’t mind seeing Jim Nill come in. He comes from a successful franchise and appears to have a hand in drafting well. That’s something the Lightning have had trouble with (at least in the later rounds).
There will be a lot of noise about bringing feaster back, but I’d rather see the orginzation move forward than try to capture the past.

Yes on Nill
No on Feaster. I’m with you on both accounts. Steve Yzerman is also being named as a candidate but personally I think h isn’t someone with the credentials int eh front office. He had a handy job assembling a Canadian all-star team for the Olympics. That’s not such a tough gige. Erlendsson painted it as if that put him over the top.
That’s not a difficult gig. Doing the draft, building a roster of multinational talent (and not multinational all-stars) is difficult.

now if yzerman had put together a gold medal team for England that would be a different story. I have a feeling (and I think erlendsson mentioned it) that Yzerman is being groomed to take over in detroit.

Ah, 1936.......
Those were the, err, days…… Believe it or not, that always got mentioned on the Olympic coverage over here!
Drifting slowly, lower and lower, until we reach the front row in Los Angeles come June...
