Hello all. Long time no speak. SInce you asked for random thoughts here are mine:

Can’t think of anyone better, past or current. He has a good reputation on a sucessful team and it seems to be people believe he will bring this level of sucess to the Bolts.
I think we need to see results before judging. There is still the CEO and coach to sort out (as far as I am aware), the team needs compentent people in these roles to take the great players we have and turn them into a great team.

Also I am wondering what on earth the Lightning management did to get him to come over. He seemed like a fixture in the Red Wings.

Wings owner Illitch wanted to move the current GM Holland into a different job so that Yzerman could GM the Wings, but Holland refused. Yzerman wanted to GM, but he wasn’t going to be able to in Detroit, so he looked elsewhere. How he was dragged into Tampa, tho, I have no idea. Your guess is a good as mine!

I really don’t know what to expect. He did pretty well as an assistant GM with Detroit, and he managed to make the right choices in building a gold medal team (though some choices were obvious there). He’s on his on his own now, but he knows how to build a championship team. He could pretty much turn the Lightning around right away or just continue the rebuild with guys like Stamkos and Hedman (and other prospects).

Yes, I do.

That opens up a wide range of possibilities. Europe. Minors. NHL assistant coaches. As I said in the thread this afternoon, I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with someone like Paul MacLean. I know Steve said he had no intention of raiding the Wings front office, but I also think that if the right guy is there, Yzerman will not hesitate to go after him either.

I am surpised at how good people are here. I checked out the San Jose / Red Wings boards during the playoffs and they seemed a lot more abarasive to other teams fans. And not in the friendly banter kind of way either.

Maybe was just the series but I do like the fact people here are friendly to pretty much anyone who turns up.

Generally I see people try to defend themselves when they come over here and admit they are fans of an opposing team. I think that’s ridiculous. As long as you can post and behave yourself, there is no reason that anyone should feel threatened by an outsider commenting.

If someone comes in and deliberately trolls, that’s one thing, but it’s not like a fan from another team is destroying the sanctity of our lair or something….

Pretty good article. And some fans are thinking that Steve is just “on loan” to us and as soon as Holland does retire he’ll quit here and go back “home”. Hate to disappoint them, but….

Kinda like all those Habs fans thinking that Vinny and Marty were just “on loan” and they would come back “home” to play.

I kinda got that sentiment from the press conference. He said it was long term. I take that to mean him staying too. He seemed genuinely excited for the opportunity.

Well, Boyle did know that he couldn’t shoot on his own goalie during a Lightning game. So I’d say that he should come back. It’d bring his game back to where it was, anyways.

For a team building long term, there is too much talent in this draft to pass on it for a veteran or other player that fills the roster at current.

Yzerman is not talking like Dudley did in 1999 either — about having to get assets, and moving assets.

People treat Downie as untouchable… I’m on the fence. Can he play on a team that is not run by Mr. Puck Mutt?

"Seen Cincuenta" -- 04.10.10 -- Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on May 25, 2010 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I think so. Tocchet did him a huge favor by giving him a chance. And Downie did himself a huge favor by listening to him. He did well enough at World Championships under a different coach.

Downie? Yeah, he had a problem with someone’s goaltender – I don’t remember who it was. But he didn’t do anything that deserved suspension. So that’s a step in the right direction. But even still, I think Vinny & Marty can help keep him in line.

I didn’t like him in the WC’s…he was with Ott, but I wasn’t impressed. And the goaltender thing with Varlamov was not the only tussle he got in

by Dani Toth on May 25, 2010 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Meszaros sort of comes to mind. Although, I think he can be a good defenseman with the right coach. He won’t ever live up to the contract that he has, tho.

The guys who I find with value are UFA’s. The RFA’s — this was why I sort of stressed Kurvers could have handled it — are expendable in that they only nee dto be tendered qualifying offers to hold their rights another year. I’d like to see Lundin and Purcell back for sure…

It’s on defense where guys could be moved. Walker, Mezaros, and more. But that would have to show confidence in some of the Bolts prospects on D.

by John Fontana on May 25, 2010 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Lots of prospects on D. Not many I’d say I have a lot of confidence in. Lundin absolutely. He’s becoming a good shut down type Dman. Tyrell? Mihalek (spelling?) then who? They kinda thin on the blue line in the minors.

Yzerman wants depth – that includes the minor leagues. It wouldn’t do the team much good if he brought up prospects that aren’t ready. Just assessing the talent that they’ve got is going to be huge for him this summer.
