Report: Lightning to request permission to speak with Dineen about Head Coaching job
Well, if secrecy was Jeff Vinik's thing during his GM search, Steve Yzerman's track while searching for a new head coach appears to be somewhat different:
The Columbus Dispatch reports today:
Three independent NHL sources have told The Dispatch that Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman will request permission from Buffalo to interview Dineen within the next few days, that he has a keen interest in the former Blue Jackets player and development coach. Dineen, who has declined comment throughout the month-long search, has not returned phone messages left from The Dispatch in recent days.
This comes through Columbus because it's another market trying to fill a vacant head coaching role and Dineen has interviewed there for the job.
This is likely only the beginning. Yzerman has said hiring a coach by July 1st and Unrestricted Free Agency is the target.

Perhaps this is more smokescreen (like I believe the rumors of Pierre McGuire being the “front runner” for the GM position were intended to be) than actual fact. However, I’ve also read Dineen has a good reputation as an “up-and-comer.”
The McGuire rumors were not smokescreen. That would imply deliberate use of the media to fake out the media. Vinik does not care for the media, period.
It was people making stuff up, or just a game of telephone. “McGuire interviewed.” “McGuire interviewed and vinik liked him.” “McGuire interviewed becasue Yzerman is out…” etc.
I’ve seen the game of Telephone too often with stories so far this offseason. Very lazy reporting in getting facts right the first time.
Dineen is only going to be one of several candidates to be talked to. This is jsut the first step of a process.

In Columbus
This story broke in Columbus not in Tampa. So Yzerman may be trying on his end to keep a Vinik like lid on things. But someone in Columbus or Buffalo leaked it. Hard to control both ends of that situation.
Happines Is a Night at a Hockey Game
Somehow I doubt they’ll have the same success in concealing the coaching candidates/search as they did with the GM search. I’m sure they’d like to try, but looks like the cat’s out of the bag…
I have come to a conclusion... Martin St Louis = waterbug on meth...

They concealed the GM search? Yzerman’s name was out there for weeks, not days or hours. And John F., you hit the nail on the head with the McGuire situation.
His name was out there (Yzerman), and that seemed to come from the fact Vinik asked permission (and was leaked out through Detroit), Besides that, how much of the GM search played out in the media compared to, say, the Melrose hiring? The polar opposite of a search — where everything leaked out entirely weeks before hand.
I mean, you are right — his name was out there weeks before hand… But everything else about the entire GM search (and there were others interviewed) was conducted in the dark (which drove people crazy and, thus the game of Telephone )
