Ilitch attempts a staff shuffling in order to keep Yzerman
Interesting bits of information about Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch trying to shuffle staff in Detroit in order to keep Steve Yzerman with the franchise. Yzerman, of course, is thought to be the leading candidate for the Lightning general manger role:
"Stevie Y wants to become a GM; we'd love to have him as a GM,'' Ilitch said. "I keep telling Kenny, 'Hey, I want to move you up to president.' He goes, 'I don't want to be a president, I want to be a GM.' So he's going to stay there as GM.''
Holland made it clear he is happy at his current post, which he has held since 1997.
"I'm the general manager, I don't have any interest in becoming president,'' Holland said. "I'm a general manager, that's what I was hired to do.''
Former Wings coach Scotty Bowman had told the St. Pete Times Damian Cristodero that Ilitch looks at Yzerman like a son... You can see evidence of that here, and the fact Ilitch doesn't want him leaving the nest.

This tells me that Yzerman’s seriously thinking about leaving. Whether it’s for Tampa or not, that’s another story. Still, why bother shuffling people around if Yzerman wasn’t seriously tempted to go?
There's nothing quite like the sound of a frozen puck hitting the glass. It makes me happy.

All well and good to name Steve a GM and Holland as President, but who really would have the power and final say?
Dallas faced the same thing quite a while ago when Guy Carboneau wanted a better position with the Stars management or coaching wise, but the team didn’t have the room (so it seemed) to accommodate him so Guy moved on to Montreal… Stung a little to lose him but Guy had to do what was best for himself. I’m not convinced that even if Ilitch was able to shuffle the chairs, it would be the best move available to Yzerman.
