Why The Lightning Should Draft Nino Niederreiter
With the 2010 NHL Entry Draft coming up on June 25th in Los Angeles, I thought I would express my opinion on who the Bolts should take with their #6 pick in the draft, Nino Neiderreiter.
Who Is Nino Neiderreiter?
Nino Neiderreiter is a 6ft 1in, 205lb left winger from Switzerland. He plays for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. He is a high energy, offensive player who is estimated to go at the #10 position in this year's draft.
What Kind of Experience Does He Have?
Because Neiderreiter plays in the WHL, he is already well adjusted to the North American style of play. Last season with the Winterhawks, he played 65 games, scoring 36 goals and recording 24 assists. In the 13 games he played in the WHL playoffs, he scored 8 goals and 8 assists. In addition to this, he performed surprisingly well at the 2009/2010 World Junior Championship tounament. In his 7 games played, he netted 6 goals and had 4 assists. He also helped team Switzerland shock the hockey world by scoring a goal in the final minute of regulation against the powerhouse Russian team to tie the game at 2-2, then followed that up by scoring the overtime winner, defeating the heavily favored Russians. He was also selected to the tournament all-star team.
These are just a couple of general questions you may have asked yourself when you heard his name. But here is the bigger and most important question:
How Can He Help The Lightning and Why Do They Need Him?
Well my friends, while I understand that the Lightning still need help on the back-end with their defense, they made a huge step in doing that when they drafted Victor Hedman #2 overall last year. The old cliche is that "defense wins championships" but if you watched this past Stanley Cup Finals series between Chicago and Philadelphia, I think you'll agree that the old cliche doesn't always prove to be true. Besides, the Lightning are in desperate need of wingers as it is. I mean lets be honest, Marty St.Louis is not getting any younger, and remember the left winger who was supposed to give a much needed offensive boost to the team last year, Alex Tanguay? Yeah. He did wonders for us (insert sarcastic tone here)
Look, Neiderreiter is an aggressive player with good size and speed. I think that he could be a nice offensive threat for the Lightning in the years to come. Come on people, the "Stamkos to Neiderreiter" line sounds pretty sexy, don't you think?
Anyway, this is exactly why the Lightning need him. He has alot of offensive potential. This is something that a team always needs to have in their organization. And on top of that, he is a scoring WINGER (keyword "winger" if you didn't catch that.) When you really think about it, Marty St.Louis is the only true scoring winger that the Lightning have had. So if you have a better suggestion, please, I'd love to hear it. But I say El Nino for the pick!

They're not big on him at Boltprospects.com
And personally, from going over prospects and draft data, I ended up steering away from him in the SB Nation mock draft (details on that one come out soon.
Regardless, I am bigger on the Lightning taking a wing than selecting another center or defenseman with the top pick.

I don't see Fowler or Gudbranson falling to us
That’s why i’m going to agree with you. Our pipeline is relatively thin, even though Yzerman hasn’t hinted at pushing Ashton, Panik, or Tyrell into the roster. You’re hinting that Niederretier is NHL ready. A crafty left winger with Stamkos sounds oh so sexy, but is he ready to serve on the 2nd line? He forces his passing up front, and the passing issue should take precedence with Boucher.
Correction
You’re not hinting he should see immediate ice time, you’re demanding. Best case scenario, we take Connolly and play him with Tyrell.
OK, lets touch on his readiness of Nino for a second: World Championships this spring: No points in four games. The tournament was largely panned because of dissinterest. Shouldn’t that have proved a big opportunity for guys like Nino to step up and show the world that they will skate circles around you if they give you the opportunity to do so?

BTW — SB Nation’s Mock Draft is ongoing at this time. My selection for the Bolts will be up later today.

Bolts need a wing. They need a puck moving defenseman too but they need to get an established one of those. They actually need a quality goalie too as they are stacked with strictly mediocre ones in the system.
I don’t trust going goalie with such a high pick. Maybe becasue we got burned with Feaster’s selection in 2006.
Jack Campbell, for what it’s worth, is the top rated goaltender…
I don’t expect this guy (whoever they take) to play on the Lightning for at least a year, but I’d srather see a wing selected than see a goalie or Dman. Most of our centers become defacto wings because of lack of talent/depth on wing.

I didn't want to be the first to comment on Campbell.
But I have my reservations on a presumptuous American goalie who tends to overcompensate a reactional style for his lack of optimal size. The risks are just to high to spend a sixth spot on him, when we already have a reaction game goalie who was trained in juniors with upside. Besides, Smith should play out his time in Tampa to substantiate the Richards trade, for the benefit of giving Tokarski some more seasoning.
The guy with bum hips? Missed the season (mostly) because of it? You’d take that risk with an 18 year old who already has hip problems?

Yes
According to Connolly himself the hip issues are over with. If he recovers, which isn’t an improbability, we will have our star winger. Who do you want, Tarasenko?
I think Connolly is a good choice, myself.
There's nothing quite like the sound of a frozen puck hitting the glass. It makes me happy.

Oh how right I was. Can’t wait for this kid to make all the doubters eat words. Every scout and doctor he has ever seen has cleared him to play. In all honesty, this guy look just as good if not better than Hall and Seguin. Furthermore Nino’s goals that I have seen are not impressive at all. On the flip side Johansen does look sick, he reminds me of Spezza.

Draft choice
Connlly gudbranson fowler are my choices in that order…. after that, I do not know…whatever the scouts think is what I think, we have the work of Detroit and tampa scouts combined. This could be good and I trust them.
