Stanley Cup champions, six years later

Finally_medium

Things change in sports, that's just how it goes.  From the rafters to the cellar in a matter of years...  It's not like that hadn't happened before.  Yes, things change, but the memories we take from the events that we see and experience...  Those last forever.

Revel in it.  It happened.  That was us.  And it can happen again.

taken from five year anniversary post

Happy Anniversary.

What are some of your memories from the 2004 NHL playoffs and the Stanley Cup final versus the Flames?

I’m not a hardcore Lightning fan, but I enjoyed their run that year. I’ve liked the team ever since then, especially the BFFs, Vinny Lecavalier, Marty St.Louis, and Brad Richards. That’s why I was thrilled when B-Rad got traded to the Stars.

Here's to all us girls who love hockey...and the men who play it.

Six years ago, I was waiting for my friend from Calgary to arrive. We ended up going to Times Palace and sitting up in the nose bleed section (paid 150 each for tickets through ticketnmaster) near the press box.

I remember that afternoon a lot. It had been so dry that spring, and yet that afternoon there were downpours around. You could see single instances of rain. There was thunder, there was lightning…

It was like an omen.

And I remember being int he arena and how slick the concourse was. I mean that quite literally — you slipped and slid everywhere because of the condensation from the humid air meeting the cool dry air inside the building.

Just a few years previous, I had been told on ESPN’s old message board by some nut “I could lifve for another 75 years and see your team will never a Stanley Cup.” That was the perception taken from most casual fans from other parts of the world, for so long; the fact the Lightning were in a non traditional market and stunk…

So when Dave was told to get his Stanley Cup, I still couldn’t believe it. It happened. It was ours.

On top of that, I felt terrible for my friend who just made a 3000 mile trek to Tampa to see 24000 fans going nuts as his team lost.

Felt Like Clark B

I had been in Toronto for 15 years but only enjoyed two baseball parades in the early 90’s but never a Leaf parade. Moving to Jacksonville Florida on Mar 1, 2004 after a detour to Puerto RIco for two years (ill fated marriage); I noticed I had less hockey on TV in JAX than on the base BUT a local team was going to the playoffs. I have ALWAYS pulled for the home team after making a vow as a kid to do so because I was quite annoyed with the town newspaper editor who loved our local football team’s hated rival.

It was a pleasure to pull for a hockey team making a bit of a playoff run and I hopped on that bandwagon when the next gentleman fell off (the wagon). I was stunned and euphoric. I could not believe my new team in TAMPA , FLORIDA were Stanley Cup Champs. Thank you Sun Sports for getting me involved early on. I relegated the Leafs and Senators (where my family is) to second class status for evermore. I have a friend who comes up twice a year from Toronto to golf and avoid the snow. He says our fans are louder than those in Toronto by a lot. He witnessed Victor Hedman’s 1st NHL goal this year (what a beauty – I call him Thor and keep posting that on CBS boards) and Stamkos’ big goals in our final home game when we fed him the puck constantly. I felt like I had gone from the OUTHOUSE of FANDOM to the PENTHOUSE with that Championship. Yea, I was just sitting on my living room couch, but it was still an awesome memory not to be forgotten.

And if I can just get some things in order in the next year , I hope I can somehow contribute to the Lightning’s important vision for the team and community. Maybe a significant cross promotion or something. Mr Vinik is the man I have been hoping would come to save and build our franchise since I knew the Davidson’s wanted out. I believe in this franchise with my whole heart. We have geat days and years ahead of us.

We are pulling for a team that will be Penthouse dwellers, so let’s not be shy cause we will never make it to the GM’s box seat for a Stanley Cup victory at home in game 7 if we are (shy). LOL

Clark, that was an awesome story. Glad no harm was done!

We call Hedman “Big Vik”. We have a whole list of nicknames somewhere that we’ll polish off for training camp. Our favorites are James “Killer” Wright and Zenon “Zeke” Konopka – who hopefully sticks around.
