For the past two years, under Cowboy rule, the Lightning have made a big splash at the opening of free agency.
Steve Yzerman has played down the notion that the Lightning will make a splash, or any big moves for that matter. The moves that will be made will likely come in the aftermath of the big-shebang moves at the onset o Free Agency.
Never the less, this is an open thread and live blog devloted to the opening of 2010 NHL free agency.

Previous ownership, previous coaches were at fault. But if he’s blaming the fans, then he’s pointing fingers at the wrong people. If he expected them to welcome him with open arms simply because he is who he is, and not because of how he played, then it was time for him to go, anyways.

I got two clarinets and an oboe. Oh, and an African thumb piano. I used to play clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, and baritone sax back in the day. My brother-in-law is a drummer (just a hobby, and he plays at his church), and a couple of nephews and a niece play guitar. We’re a musical kind of family.

My dad’s musical, and my oldest sister was – not so much anymore. She met her husband, the drummer, in high school band class. And two of my sisters played sports, too. So it was sort of hit and miss since I have four older sisters.
I’d write music, but I’d need to get myself a keyboard for that. Still trying to decide if I just want to teach myself piano or actually take lessons. I keep going back and forth with that. Oh, and I sing, too. :o)

Happy with it. He’s friends with Smitty. Maybe that can be used for an advantage for both. They’ll push each other. Ellis has got a lot to prove after losing the starter tag in Nashville. We’ll see. Also depends on the system that Boucher installs.

2 yrs. So this year it’ll be (at least to start) Ellis/Smitty and next year Ellis/Tokarski (or whoever) before Tokarski or one of the other young goalies are ready to go. Clearing the Mezzy contract allows them to resign Marty. Pretty much a wash and I’ll take that any day.

My boss (Oilers fan) recons he has a better +/- than the rest of the team so is a great player to pickup.
I hope he doesn’t end up following the same path as the player he is touted to replace.
I think the 3.6M over 2 year paycheck probably had a bit of influence over the decision.

Don’t know if the new deal has a NTC or not. Didn’t hear all the specifics. But his NTC is still in effect for the upcoming year; the extension doesn’t kick in until NEXT July 1.

Something funny (at least to me) in Nitty going to San Jose:
Got Married in April. Best Man (San Jose fan) arranged some celebrations which included a bunch of guys dressing up as SJS players and firing street hockey pucks at me while I was dressed up as Nitty, protected only by bubble wrap and a fencing mask. (No Ice Hockey gear or ice skating rinks where I live).
I say that is when he passed his trial for the team.

Oh, I’m sure it’ll be a “that day” decision. I’ll be sitting at my desk at work, looking at the clock, and then decide to just go – just because I can. Or, I’ll shrug my shoulders and not. Hard to say, really.
I try not to commit to anything unless I’m 100% certain. And with the roads and weather here in February, I could never really be certain about going to a game until that day, anyways. Hence the “that day” decision bit of things. ;o)

The Penguins committed $45 million for Martin and Michalek
The Penguins committed $45 million on Thursday to sign defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek to five-year contracts after failing to reach terms with Sergei Gonchar and Dan Hamhuis.
Martin, who made $4.5 million with Atlantic Division-rival New Jersey last season, will make $25 million over five seasons with Pittsburgh—the kind of money the Penguins normally pay only to premier offensive players. Michalek will make $20 million over five seasons, a major upgrade from the $1.5 million he made with Phoenix last season.
