BREAKING: Gagne Traded to Tampa Bay Lightning [UPDATED]
Daily News of Philadelphia is reporting via Twitter that Simon Gagne has been traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning from the Philadephia Flyers. We're awaiting confirmation as well as players involved. We'll keep you up to date here as more information becomes available.
[Note by John Fontana, 07/19/10 2:38 PM EDT ] Damian Cristordero is reporting that the Flyers traded LW Gagne for defenseman Matt Walker and a 4th round selection in 2011. That's the second veteran D-man that the Flyers have taken off the Lightning's hands this off-season.
[Note by John Fontana, 07/19/10 2:44 PM EDT ] There had been reports online earlier as the story first broke about players such as forward Dana Tyrell and defenseman Ty Wishart going back to the Flyers for Gagne. That was painful to see but I could understand it. You have to give to get... Then there were unconfirmed online reports that a goaltender would be part of the package -- Mike Smith? Dustin Tokarski? Can't say, I only found out the reports of a goalie through third-parties (without the sources of the rumor being clarified).
But Matt Walker? Old Tex himself and a fourth round pick in 2011? I did not see that coming and it is stunning Lightning fans and hockey foes alike. Walker is solid but not flashy... Yet he's overpaid while the Bolts have a load of defensemen in the system just waiting to prove themselves. For the Flyers to take Walker and his $1.7 Million per-year contract off the Bolts hands is breathtaking... Especially while wanting o clear cap space.
The official press release has been added below the jump
LIGHTNING ACQUIRE LW SIMON GAGNE FROM PHILADELPIA
D Matt Walker, 4th-Round Pick In 2011 Sent to Flyers
TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired two-time 40-goal scorer Simon Gagne (gah-N’YAY, see-MOHN) from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for defenseman Matt Walker and a fourth-round draft pick in 2011 today, Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced.
"In adding Simon to the Lightning today, we acquire a very talented player that will play along side our top forwards," said Yzerman upon making the announcement. "With his combination of speed and skill we are excited to have him with us and grateful he was willing to waive his no movement clause. This trade not only makes us a better team in the short-term, it helps create long-term flexibility for us, which all along has been one of our top priorities."
Gagne, 6-foot, 195 pounds, has played in 664 career NHL games, all with the Flyers, recording 259 goals, 72 power play goals, 11 shorthanded goals, 47 game-winning goals and 524 points with a career plus-143 rating. He has put together two seasons with 40 goals or more, four with 30 goals or more and seven with 20 or more. Gagne ranks ninth on the all-time Philadelphia goals list, 10th for points and 11th for power play goals. He was awarded the Bobby Clarke Trophy, given annually to the Flyers’ most valuable player, following both the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
"I’m very excited right now," Gagne said. "I’m looking at this opportunity as a new challenge and a new start. Tampa Bay was a team I was more than willing to waive my no move clause for. I really like the direction the team is headed in with a solid owner, Steve Yzerman as GM and Coach Boucher. I’m really looking forward to playing with guys like Lecavalier, Stamkos and St. Louis. I’m excited to be a member of the Lightning and I’m looking forward to starting next season in Tampa Bay."
A native of Ste. Foy, Quebec, Gagne was selected to the NHL All-Star Game in 2001 and 2007. He was also named to the 2000 NHL All-Rookie Team. Gagne has missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs just twice during his 11-year NHL career. He has played in 90 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, recording 32 goals and 47 points.
Gagne played in 58 games with the Flyers last season, recording 17 goals, five power-play goals, four game-winning goals and 40 points. He missed much of the first portion of the season due to injury and returned to action December 19. He amassed 16 goals and 35 points in the 49 games after he returned to the line-up. His 18:37 in average ice time ranked third among Flyers forwards.
Gagne shined in Philadelphia’s journey to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, recording nine goals and 12 points in 19 contests. He led the team during the postseason in power play goals with five (tied for the NHL lead), was third in goals and tied for second with two game-winning goals.
Gagne has also excelled in international competition, representing Canada in multiple tournaments. He won the Gold Medal at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City and won the Silver Medal at the 1999 World Junior Championships, where he lefd the tournament with seven goals.
The 30-year-old was drafted by Philadelphia in the first round, 22nd overall, of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft out of Quebec of the QMJHL.

Wow.
Stevie Y. wanted Gagne and he wanted him bad. It would seem he was hoping Kovalchuk would choose LA but when that was clearly not going to happen, upped the ante.
Can’t wait to see the details. I do think we’ll be saying goodbye to a pretty good prospect.

Apology
I really am surprised at how little it took to get Gagne. Our wonderful GM got him for far less than I thought it would take. I apologize for being a doubter.
This is a great move for the Bolts—and Gullible Move, Part 2 by the Flyers.
No apology needed!
Even I didn’t foresee Gagne coming this cheaply and he does not come without injury concerns. The important thing is the Lightning is a better team today and it has become so without sacrificing the foreseeable future.

Effectively it’s Simon Gagne + 2012 2nd round pick for Andrej Meszaros + Matt Walker + 2011 4th round pick.
Does anybody still want to doubt Yzerman?

See my first apology.
On that note, for the record I’ve never doubted Stevie Y’s ability. I merely was worried about how much we would have to give up in return.
That was for "Gobaby"

Yzerman strikes again
I like this trade…..a lot. We dump an underachieving, over paid #6 d, and a 4th round pick for a former 40+ goal scoring top 6 foward. It still brings the payroll up to about $53mil but makes us a much stronger team. I’m glad Y resisted the wishes for Tyrell or Wishart to be included. This also opens up a possible spot on the d for the young kids to shoot for at training camp.
Don in St Pete
To don,
mez = 4.2 mill
walker = 1.7 mil
4th round pick :/
for Gagne 5.2
2nd round pick :)
yes we have one less player but they took useless cap hits mez is worth only 1.7 and walker isnt even worth 1 mil. we still win. :D and we still got 6-7 1 way contract d men.

This is a good step for making a division that has been pretty lousy more competitive.
While the Caps have been sitting idly by this offseason, the Bolts and Thrashers have been taking steps to better their teams. I think you guys are still another year or two away from challenging for the division, but you could sneak into the playoffs this year (I predicted the Bolts to sneak into the playoffs this past season and was wrong though).

My theory for this offseason is that Yzerman has a stack of embarrassing photos of Holmgren that he’s threatening to release.
Now all he needs to do is trade his knees and a 7th round pick for a younger set of knees and be your third line center and you’ll make the Stanley Cup Finals.

This is highway robbery, to put it in plain terms. Yzerman took advantage of the Flyers desperation to move cap space.
Stamkos, St. Louis, Vinny and Gagne…I don’t think there’s a better group of shooters anywhere in the NHL.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Agreed. But then what would the lines look like? You figure Stamkos/St Louis/Downie will stay together, then Vinny/Malone/Gagne I suppose. Solid 1-2 punch but then you could use a few depth forwards
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Plenty of space to get 1-2 more bottom-6 forwards.
Nate Thompson and Teddy Purcell will be back. Johan Harju, who’s coming from the KHL, is a virtual lock. Niklas Persson could make the club. You also have a couple kids that have seen some or are close to seeing some NHL action (Wright, Ashton, Tyrell). One of the kids might just earn a spot.
Tops, I see one or two more forwards being signed. There’s really not a lot more left for Yzerman to do.

Top 2 are interchangeable but my best guess at present...

I still miss Malone. We haven’t been able to find a decent power forward since he left. We’re hoping Eric Tangradi might be the guy but he’s still very young and very unproven.
We know Steve Downie quite well, actually. Not just because of that incident with Sid last year. But he did have an excellent year last year. How old even is he, 23? I can see Tampa making the playoffs this year if everything falls into place – plus it’ll help you guys a ton that you’ve got 12 games against Florida & Atlanta, who should be 2 of the worst teams in the league next year to pick on

Popular rumor here is that he’s a frontrunner to play on the Crosby line next year. Some people are even calling him the second coming of Kevin Stevens – I won’t go that far until he plays some in the NHL, but he definitely had a solid debut against the Isles last year and showed good chemistry with Sid in camp.
We’ll have to see!

we had trouble verse florida but that might have had something to do with this guy named luongo. And malone disappeared at the end of last season on checking lines but with vinny hopefully he will regain form and downie is currently an RFA and i think he is 24 and if he continues where he left off with st. louis and stammer he could score 25 goals just sitting in the crease puttn away rebounds

I doubt they’ll trouble you much any more. They’ve lost Seidenberg, Bouwmeester, Ballard, and Horton all in a years time and could possibly lose Weiss as well.
I honestly didn’t think Vinny was bad last year – he still put up 70 points.
Agree entirely about Downie picking off rebounds.

I never understood, why were the Flyers so desperate to move him?
I know he’s had injury problems in the past and his cap number wasn’t so friendly, but what gives? You added Walker’s $1.7m and still don’t even have a million in space, so going after a goalie is out of the question unless Homer plans on moving more salary…

Burke is not without his blemishes (see Kessel, Phil) but, yeah, I don’t see the Lightning and Maple Leafs as making good trade partners.
Toronto’s need is down the middle and if Burke sits pat he is going to force Wilson into another season of Bozak or Grabovski masquerading as a first line center. Not that I would mind that, mind you. Interestingly enough, there is a pretty darn good center (Savard) more than likely available but it would take some creative wheeling and dealing for Buke and Chiarelli due to both being in precarious cap positions.

Excellent Addition
Love this trade for Gagne! I believe we got Simon so cheaply since the Flyers were looking at having to waive him if a deal couldn’t be made. Our top 2 lines are now set and few teams can match them. Vincent Lecavelier is going to have a great season with Simon on his wing. Plenty of cap space left to pickup some more 3rd and 4th line players. I would like to see Kaberle join us on defence if the price was right but must be a bargain. I am really looking forward to the season starting. Thank you Stevie Y.
Flyer Fan Here..
We were two and a half million OVER the cap and had to make a move. I was hearing we were thinking of WAIVING him, so I guess Homer jumped on the first thing he could. This is an amazing deal for you guys, and a necessary one for us. You will love Gaggy just like we do very shortly. Rough day for me.

Knew the necessity of it… But to be honest? I almost think Waiving him would have been a better option for you. Gagne on the open market instead of saddled with another pricey contract for an unnecessary player on the roster.
Honestly, I said it above in the story and I will say it again, I knew we’d have to pay a price. Give to get. I was ready to lose prospects… But this just floored me.

Waiving was an option but it really wasn't....
…if that makes sense. Yes, the cap savings would have been much greater if Gagne is picked up on the waiver wire, but you don’t do a good soldier like Gagne dirty without suffering repercussions. The short-term gain isn’t worth the possible alienation in the fan base and the
Remember Boyle-gate? The mere threat of placing Boyle on waivers in order to circumvent his no-trade clause cost the previous regime a lot of goodwill, both locally and nationally. Of course, OK Hockey followed that incident with a string of other shenanigans, but you get the point.
Then again, I guess you could argue that Paul Holmgren is already the most hated GM, by his own team’s fanbase, in the league (judging by the nearly universal condemnation I read concerning him by purported Flyers fans) and thus what does the extra stigma matter…

Good news
Now Katchis can put that nasty, orange sweater away and convert solely commit herself to the Bolts.
Forget Kaberle
Solid move by Yzerman. I was against this initially because I thought there was no way we could send salary back. The Walker contract was a problem with a solid group of d prospects knocking on the door, who are more mobile, more talented and cheaper. Kaberle, while he would be a nice addition would cost us a top 6 forward after just filling out our top 6. Wait until the deadline to make that move unless another team is as desperate as the Flyers were with Gagne. I think we see one more trade for a 4th line guy who can chuck the nucks but is not a defensive liability. Pencil in Tyrell as the 3rd line center with Purcell and Harju on the wings.

This will only be a small part of it, but here’s a name for you: Ian White.
Fun facts:
a) unsigned RFA of the cap-strapped Calgary Flames
b) right-side shot
c) 26 years old
d) has posted 5 straight 20 point seasons (and totaled 38 last season)
e) has fought Ilya Kovalchuk
f) part of the package that was shipped from Toronto for Dion Phaneuf last season
g) has been known to sport the increasingly rarer mustache on occasion
h) made $800,000 last season

I can’t see Stevie Y giving White and offer sheet. That just doesn’t seem to me an Yzerman-esque thing to do. So it’ll have to be a real trade. Sutter is about as dumb as Holmgren, so maybe it’ll work out! I would expect White to command around $3.5 or so, though. Do you want to pay that?
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 20, 2010 2:38 AM EDT up reply actions
He won't...
…he can’t. White elected for arbitration; he cannot receive offer sheets from opposing clubs.
I never said how I thought he should be acquired but I would never have suggested using an offer sheet. I didn’t even consider that White might have filed for arbitration (didn’t do my homework!).
I guess there’s a remote possibility that Calgary will balk at his award IF he is not signed before his scheduled hearing (which is at the end of this month), but a poster at BoltProspects questioned why Calgary not find a way to retain the centerpiece of the trade for Dion Phaneuf? I really can’t see why Sutter wouldn’t try to unload Sarich or Staios before parting ways with White, but it would not be the first time Sutter has pulled a head-scratcher if he does just that.
Also, I’m not sure if a player who has filed for arbitration can be traded prior to his hearing. I’m guessing no, but I’m too lazy to look it up at the moment.

Halak was traded by Montreal after he filed for Arbitration. In fact a lot of guys get traded because of that. Calgary desperately wants to hold onto White, but I think he would be a good fit here. Word is that Calgary is trying hard to trade Regehr or Sarich. Any trade that adds salary who have to see some going back the other way. Vancouver is trying to move Kevin Bieksa, any thoughts on him?
