Tod Leiweke Press Conference and Open Thread

WHERE: Icons Restaurant, St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa, Florida
WHEN: 11 AM EDT
MEDIA: BHSN (Bright House Cable subscribers only), FSN Florida (stream), Tampa Bay Lightning.com (stream)

Four months after purchasing the Tampa Bay Lightning , Jeffrey Vinik introduces the man that will run the business aspects of the team this morning.  Tod Leiweke, former CEO of Vulcan Sports (overseeing the Seattle's Seahawks, Sounder FC and the Portland Trail Blazers) and beer-league left wing, will make his Times Palace debut.

Lets recap Mr. Vinik’s ownership for a moment:

Bought the team in an all-cash transaction from OK Hockey. Cleaned house…

Hired one of the highest profile names as GM in the league , who in turn hired one of the highest profile promising head coaches available this off-season.
And now Vinik has persisted and endured long enough to secure one of the marquee Sports Entertainment executives in North America as CEO.

And here the mainstream media expected him just to hire as many former Minnesota Wild people as possible because of the Jac Sperling connection.

I’m not making any predictions like that. I just want the franchise healthy again and thriving. Not atrophying like it had under OK (Not Really) Hockey

Even more baby steps… I’ll be pleased with organization on the ice. Some semblance of a game plan, not players skating around clueless… They do that and the playoffs (and SC) will come…

What? You mean it's not October yet???

by TB_hockey_fan on Jul 28, 2010 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I know we tend to conflict, it’s not a deliberate attempt at contradicting you or disagreeing with you. I think the point is many of us are more cautious and do not want to go bold into anything. This reflects the tepid reaction toward the FA stuff and not going gung-ho and backing the prediciton.

The Leiweke hire is also outside the hockey operations. It’ll make the organization better as a whole, but it doesn’t stand as a trump-all with the on-ice product.

Three things to stand for:

  1. Fans. Season Ticket holders are top of the Fans. Leiweke bought six season tickets for himself.
  1. Hockey. Following Yzerman’s lead.
  1. Community.

Vinik & Leiweke asked if Leiweke was asked twice to take the position of CEO.

Leiweke was asked twice. First time at the Olympics. Second time after Yzerman was hired. Yzerman being hired was the key to Leiweke taking the job.

Leiweke will split time between Seattle & Tampa until a CEO for VSE is found – expects it to take months.

by John Fontana on Jul 28, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

It may be, but they’re going to take their time with it. Leiweke essentially said that he spent 7 years building something and he wants to be sure it keeps going. So he’s going to be very particular about his replacement, I think.

by TB_hockey_fan on Jul 28, 2010 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

The thought of Yzerman leading the team and having Leiweke having his name on the Stanley Cup played into that, I think. So it still comes back to Yzerman. Tho, perhaps it’s really Vinik and not Yzerman.

Hmmm. Think on this some more I will. Hmmm…. ;o)
