Tuesday night link dump and open thread
Before we begin, major thanks are due to the Raw Charge staff. I'm not the only one contributing links to these stories, it's an accumulation of findings from around the net by Cassie McClellan, Meredith Qualls, Nolan Whyte, Dani Toth, Tina Robinson, and myself.
The byline of this (and other link dump/open thread posts) may read "John Fontana", but there are more people involved in making these things happen than myself.

Don't Trade Vinny's "Day With The Cup" post
I had a few ideas that I threw out at random… Just riffing to get his mind going… But these I I wrote and were rather proud of…
Dave Andreychuk, having finally reached the apex of the mountain after
a 22 year attempt, tried to toss the Stanley Cup into the firey pits
of Mount Doom from whence it was forged, in order to destroy it and
prevent others from suffering the Cup’s elusiveness ever again.
Tim Taylor stopped him — preventing the Cup’s destruction — claimed
it as his own, and then vanished into thin air. He spent HIS day with
the Cup celebrating among the halfings in the Shire (picture of St.
Louis and Perrin appropriate here).

A lot of people seem to think it would give the ‘Nucks some cap relief. Personally, although it doesn’t kick in until the start of the season, I believe it’s already been vetted by the league, so how can they go back and say nonono…? Will they do it to Savard, Hossa, DiPietro, even? They’re opening a big can of worms, imo.
A creep from the cradle, but a hero's what I want to be
I think it’s a can of worms that need to be opened. Lax regulation of contracts in the past is just as detrimental to people deliberately circumventing the cap.
And the League is known for being brian dead when it comes to regulating things — be it on ice officials, or how they hand out suspensions — a lack of consistency.

Would be a welcome addition, but too rich for Stevie’s blood. Especially if somehow Ranger returns. Ranger is essentially from the same school as Kaberle/Boyle.
Ranger?
Might as well forget about him until we hear otherwise. Seriously. I was a huge fan of his (heck, I wear #54 on the ice) and would welcome him back, but there’s NO REASON, at this point, to believe he’ll be back. Ever.

The Lightning seem to have loads of cap space. 4 mil wouldn’t throw everything out of whack that much, would it?
A creep from the cradle, but a hero's what I want to be
Yeah
The ONLY way that moving Malone would make sense is if Yzerman and Boucher like what they saw from Ashton in early July and were convinced he was ready for the big show and were willing to let him battle Purcell all season long for a place alongside Vinny.
by Michael Gallimore on Aug 10, 2010 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Burke will be lucky to walk away with a truculent top-six winger let alone a first-round pick.
Highly doubt Yzerman would have to pay so much, let alone be willing to give that.
by Michael Gallimore on Aug 10, 2010 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Unlike John, I think Kaberle would “fit” in the sense that he would give us the best puck-moving option since Boyle. If healthy, you have to believe he’d put up nice numbers.
That said, he’s not a fit in the sense that he’d be taking away significant minutes from either Hedman or Lundin. Probably Lunding. Without Kaberle, Lundin would appear set to continue logging significant minutes. Thus, Kaberle could hurt his development.

I think Kaberle changes the whole chemistry of the group. Ohlund is a stay-at-home defenseman. He’d have no place in that group. Having Kaberle there would shift the entire balance to puck-moving defensemen.

Hi all! Although we need help moving the puck, we need help in our own end too. Kabs won’t be making many plays in the corner. Plus with Lundin and Clark, you suddenly have 3 undersized defensemen, who handle the puck from decent to well, but none of them is going to throw a scare into the opposition.

Good points, Don
Definitely worth mentioning, but I think acquiring Kaberle would signal totally banking on Boucher’s swarm philosophy in both zones, emphasizing numbers and positioning. Physicality nice but not requisite. Would that work? Well, like John said, that remains to be seen.
by Michael Gallimore on Aug 10, 2010 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with John
There was no system last year, or at least none discernible. What bothered me the most was we consistently gave up the blueline without a fight on even man rushes. Smaby was so good at the end of 09’ in meeting the rush at or above the blueline. They abandoned that totally last year allowing easy access to our zone.
Don in St Pete
Cassie brought up repeatedly the fact the team didn’t stand up at the blue-line during games last season.
The new system is supposed to be Go-go-go, I don’t even know how it will stand up and challenge people. or will it just avoid people?

Ohlund is damaged goods
OK made a huge mistake in not getting Ohlund checked out thoroughly. He has a Forsberg type injury and might never be the same. I loved Ohlund with Vancouver, but when a guy average 9 goals a season then only logs 11 assists and 0 goals, you know you’ve got problems.
Don in St Pete
Not every defenseman is a goal scorer. And, Forsberg’s “injury” is actually a congenital defect – it’s a mild variation of having a club foot – so it’s not the same thing at all. Having said that, while Ohlund may be in on the downside of his career, he’s still a damned good defenseman.

I agree. It wasn’t his best season, but it also wasn’t an awful one for him, either. You also have to remember that he came to a brand new team that was in the middle of some turmoil. He was in Vancouver for 11 years, and he moved out of his comfort zone completely. So that affected his play as well, I’m sure.

by Michael Gallimore on Aug 10, 2010 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Possible, but careful:
It didn’t help that Ohlund a) missed games due to injury and b) saw almost no power play time all season. His shot total (71), aside from a 42 game 99-00 season, was the lowest in his career and about half of the average of his previous five seasons.
by Michael Gallimore on Aug 10, 2010 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions
The system could work
Or it could get ugly. Think 2008-09’ Bolts. If they employ Boucher system it requires a quicker d-man to assist the 3 forwards in forechecking leaving the stay at home guy to play free-safety essentially. The 3 quicker guys currently would be Clark, Lundin and Lashoff, though Hedman has reasonable speed for his size. The problem is when they do break the full court press you have an odd man break and may have to count heavily on the goalie to bail you out.
Don in St Pete
I would compare that to 2005-06 thru 2007-08. After the Cup win, I thought that was a constant flaw that was exploited under Torts system — the odd man rush and the one-on-one with goaltending

He hurt his ankle blocking a shot in the 6th game of the 08-09’ semifinals. Still he was the Nucks go to guy and despite having Mitchell and Salo, lead them in Ice time during the playoffs. If Ohlund is healthy our d will be fine this year.

I think our D is going to need more than a healthy Ohlund (i.e. growth from Hedman, no regression by Lundin, Clark and Kubina to do their magic in the shot-blocking department, etc.), but…yeah.

Under Torts
That is what lead to Torts downfall. Despite lacking the talent to play that attacking style, he rammed it down the players throats, much like Tocc tried to make everyone a mucker and grinder. I think Boucher is smart enough to find a happy medium and employ the talent where it’s most effective.
Don in St Pete
I agree here. Boucher is supposed to cater to players, and tailor the system to the talent. No tailor the talent to the system.

Torts coached hockey like a football coach – his way or the highway. Which goes over fairly well with most players, except for Canadians, for some reason. But it’s a style that wears down on a lot of people fast.
What I like about Boucher is that masters in sports psychology that he has. :o)

Fat Tony isn't far off
I expect the Bolts to be in the playoff mix. How long will it take Flyer fans to pine for Krajicek and Parent after they get an eyeful of Mez? I like Mez and Walker but they both performed like 6-7 d as did almost everyone else last season. They may be better without Tocc’s “system” or lack thereof.
Don in St Pete
Maybe it’ll work out for them. Stranger things have happened. They could play better because of the Fear of Pronger being instilled in them.

This is his second pro contract? They need to properly work him into a price structure — sorta like Feaster did when he re-signed Craig and Ranger in 2006… The numbers have GOT to work and not come off outlandish. He’s a one-hit-wonder right now with something to prove (that it was not a fluke season)

Haven’t his numbers diminished over the last couple of seasons? Or is that symptomatic of the general play of the team? Or maybe he should just get rid of Beliveau’s number.
A creep from the cradle, but a hero's what I want to be
He wears #4 for his dad – who’s a big Bobby Orr fan – not for Beliveau. But, living in Montreal, one must appease the Montreallers. He lives there in the offseason, after all.
He was injured a couple of years ago – major shoulder surgery. Then wrist surgery last summer. So He’s had injuries to overcome. And he didn’t have regular linemates during games since Tocchet would switch things up ever other shift – which is almost no exaggeration. I think he’ll do a lot better this coming season.

I suspect based upon comparables, that if Downie signs for 1 year it will be $1.8 mil, 2 years @ $2mil and 3 years @ $2.25 mil for giving up a year of UFA eligibility.

Downs will be okay
He’s obviously come back to the mainstream. He’s working out with Stamkos at Gary Robert’s house. Now that has to be a scary proposition for the eastern conference foes. If everyone else has average years and Downs and Buggsy can net 30 each, Bolt fans will be in hog heaven.

Because look how well the last fantasy general management of the Lightning worked out (2008-09).
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Bringing in just anyone and everyone to make a big splash does not guarantee the team becomes a winner.
Besides, Kovy doesn’t know what the defensive zone is, and how playing defense is a part of the game — even for forwards. That’s worth 7 million? Offense contributor, otherwise liability? No thank you.
