A Downie / Kaberle Connection?
Does anyone else find it a little suspicious that Steve Downie is unsigned, and Tomas Kaberle ( a puck moving defenseman on the Maple Leafs) is being shopped until Sunday? I saw some rumors that Brian Burke was interested in Downie, and I know Steve Yzerman must be well aware of Kaberle's availability. The thing is Yzerman isn't going to be able to pull off any jedi mind tricks on Burke. Burke won't trade unless he's getting some value back whether it be Ryan Malone or Downie. We need a puck mover and Downie fits the Burke mold. I was just surprised that no one has really pointed this out .....
Sure, Stevie "Y" has said he wants Downie in a uniform as soon as possible, but the situation seems eerily similar to the situation Foster was in. Steve said he would give Foster an offer, and we kept hearing from Foster's agent that there seemed to be no interest on the side of the GM. I feel like there is a lack of urgency, and Steve is holding out until he knows Kaberle is unavailable for sure. I'm so use to the cowboy era, and everything being out in the open for better or worse. I guess the lack of obnoxious noise that we are all so use to is what makes Steve such a good GM so soon. The less you speak the the more intelligent you seem to be sometimes....

In a word...
No.
Not suspicious at all. As you hinted, perhaps it is a testament to the workings of the previous regime that led you to wonder this.

HIS camp was treating it like a cold-shoulder treatment while negotiations were going on. Yzerman was in contact with his camp and was active in trying to re-sign him. But at the end of the day, it was playing minutes and money that led Foster to Edmonton.

Kaberle
The Kaberle story is getting way more press than it deserves in my opinion. I’ll be glad when sunday has passed and it can be put to bed. I honestly would hate to see Downs or Malone traded. Both brings some intangibles and skills that are in short supply on the Bolts. That being said Kaberle moves the puck much better than anyone on our squad now. He’s also a great setup man on the powerplay. I think it’s more likely to be Malone because of the cap flexibility it would provide. I think it’s more likely Kaberle goes to Washington though.
