Hi Jon, been keeping up with most of the news. Should be an interesting year.

A little worried about the lack of anything regarding Downie though.

by Sidicus on Aug 24, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

There has been a lack of coverage on that. I wouldn’t be too worried as it took a while to get guys (RFA’s ) signed last season too.

"Seen Cincuenta" -- 04.10.10 -- Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Aug 24, 2010 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Leads to an interesting question

If Steve Downie were tendered an offer sheet by another club — would you let him walk or would you match the offer?

"Seen Cincuenta" -- 04.10.10 -- Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Aug 24, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Over 2 mil/yr. walk.
Under, match.

Love the Lightning? Hate the Lightning? Me too! http://donttradevinny.blogspot.com

by Matt Amos on Aug 24, 2010 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s important to retain some financial sensibility and a structure for future contracts… so anything elaborate — or long… yeah, let him walk. I don’;t know if the Lightning would get draft picks back in that case or not.

"Seen Cincuenta" -- 04.10.10 -- Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Aug 24, 2010 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Is an interesting question.

Personally it would depend on what the offer was. If its more than the Bolts are willing to pay to part with him, then walk otherwise match.

Downie has had a great season, but it is only one season and with new owners, a new system and new coach. I don’t think his ‘issues’ have gone away.

by Sidicus on Aug 24, 2010 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I need a constructive idea for a new poll

That and maybe more input on Mount Suckmore… Something that goes beyond the last 3 years.

I found the nicknames fun last year; could kick off something like that.

For a player (say Gagne, as I know he is ‘new’), a list of nick-names and the choice ‘other’.

IE:

Best Nickname for new Bolt, Simon Gagne

G-Dawg
S-Mon
Gag

Could run for several days / a week and then move on to another player who is likely to be in the organisation next year.
Other

by Sidicus on Aug 24, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, somehow I managed to stuff up my formatting other was supposed to be in the list (which can easily be improved upon).

by Sidicus on Aug 24, 2010 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Nicknames for Simon Gagne

No need coming up with anything new, seriously. There are enough nicknames for him, already used by many Simon’s fans.

Gags - most used, OMGagne and Sim… In juniors they called him Kid (cause he looked much younger than he really was). And here are some nicknames I personaly use for him, definitely don’t need to see them used by broad public but here they are: American Cheese, Cheese, Mon Fromage, Simmy, Baby, Hubby, Puppy, Mon Chiot, Twelve, Pure Awesomeness and many many others…

I love the Lightning AND the Flyers... go ahead, preach me!
Dare to follow my childish, biased, petty and cheesy alter ego.

Not really. I actually avoided the entire R and D camp. It was novelty. Some of this stuff was ridiculous. WHY do they keep changing the rules when they can’t even get the rules enforced during a game with some shred of consistency?

by John Fontana on Aug 24, 2010 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Because they seem to think that it’s easier to tweak the rules than to apply what they’ve got? They seem to think that if they fix it enough, it’ll magically work. Or something like that.

The 2 on 2 hockey bit seems full of fail. Just imagine a defensive team getting stuck with having no one who can generate offense.

They don’t need 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 or even 4-on-4 overtime. What they need is to stop awarding a point for Overtime / overtime losses. It’s the only thing that is goign to force effort. Shootout losses? 1 point. But a win is 2 points. Stop giving points just for extending the game.

yeah, because I don’t see anyone reporting he is listening to offers. I think every other team is pretty much locked in with the rosters they want for camp — sans a few who will pick up some players here and there.

I’m thinking he’s staying. If he was willing to stay in NJ for 17 years, then I think that he’s willing to re-negotiate a deal that’s more CBA friendly. Plus the lack of news might mean Lou’s working on a deal.

I don’t think the principles go to the NHL offices to discuss “conceptual” issues with the league about a contract unless there’s something being developed.

"Seen Cincuenta" -- 04.10.10 -- Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Aug 24, 2010 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

What’s obvious to you and me might not be obvious to the people who can do something about things like that. Of course, rinks are typically municipally run, and city parks/recreation people aren’t invited to things like this, so that’s a dead end all on its own.

Actually, this was stuff that they were saying last night.

I never thought about the Parks and Recreation people. Every rink in Florida is privately owned and operated. No city government (in Florida — and most of the US at this time) would be willing to invest in a building and the costs to maintain it.

"Seen Cincuenta" -- 04.10.10 -- Raw Charge.

by John Fontana on Aug 24, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

In many places, that’s not the case. It’s often the city or county who operates public rinks.
