Lightning training camp rosters set
The Lightning announced yesterday the makeup of it's roster for training camp. Camp gets underway on Friday at the St. Pete Times Forum before public events on Saturday and Sunday at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon.
Between September 17th and the close of camp the Bolts will have to whittle down the roster of 54 players to 23 or under. Key battles loom not between one or two single players but entire groupings of talent -- while we wonder who will be the #6-#8 defensemen (as is the stated plan by the team), the real question mark on everyone's mind (and it has been for a good portion of the off-season) is the makeup of the lower lines. This is where GM Steve Yzerman created the most competition.
Indeed, depth of players who will make up the bottom two pairs is at it's deepest in recent memory. Sean Bergenheim, Dominic Moore, Nate Thompson, Chris Durno, Teddy Purcell, Paul Szczechura, Blair Jones, Dana Tyrell, Marc-Antoine Pouliot, Johan Harju, Eric Perrin, Niklas Persson, James Wright, Adam Hall... These are just some of players who will be trying to cement roles on the bottom two lines.
While it's perceived that Nate Thompson and Dominic Moore are locks for the bottom-6 center roles, anything can happen in camp that changes this.
Below the jump you'll find the complete roster for the Lightning's camp. I aplogize before hand for formatting issues, as you will see the forwards are not as neatly aligned as the defense/goaltenders are.

Should be interesting as to who makes it out of training camp… The way James Wright is playing for the Prospect Tourny id like him to make the team again with his gained experience
i dont think so
bolts need more experience on the bottom two lines and i just don’t think hes there yet. he played alright last year but lets be honest the bolts weren’t very good. what’s the deal with mike smith? can they put him in the minors? i think we should give desjardins or tokarski a shot as a backup first before we throw them right into the starting roll. I hope Gudas makes the team, he looked really good at the prospects camp.
You dismiss James Wright, who has dominated the Traverse City tournament this week for the Bolts, and play up Radko Gudas who has been kept out with an injury

Zahn and Beukeboom will NOT attend camp
Both are to be returned to their junior teams.

Agree with John here
James Wright, you gotta love him! He’ll do whatever it takes, never takes a shift off and plays with heart, passion and reckless abandon. Although he was originally drafted as a projected checking line center, he seems to have grown in his offensive capabilities. It might be better for his development ( and the fortunes of Norfolk and the Lightning ) for him to get top 2 line minutes at Norfolk and play in all situations than as the 4th line center or a 3rd line winger in Tampa. I wouldn’t count him out though, he skates like the wind, is physical and will take on any situation with remarkable versatility.

6-8 d should be interesting
Even with the addition of Kubina, our d corps has gotten smaller, though also quicker. I can’t see Gudas making the team this year although I love his physical game. He takes chances and gets beat too often to be an NHL d-man this season. A year or 2 at Norfolk will do wonders for Radko and allow him the knowledge to know when to gamble and when to play safe. I see Lundin, Smaby and Wishart in the 6-8 slots to start though that could change. The system Boucher decides to employ could dictate the implementation of the defense.

IDK Wright just looked like a kid to me last year. obviously because he was but he seemed like a younger kid playing in an adult league pickup.. like he knew what he was doing but just played a little different. hard to explain, it was like he was expecting to get sent back down. I would love to see kubina and clark play together. the opponent wouldn’t get any shots on net when they were on the ice they block so many shots. but an ohlund/hedman, kubina/clark, lundin/jones, and then either smaby or wishart as the 7th or if they carry 8 then them two as a 4th line pair.
RE: Wright
I think “Starstruck” might be one word you could use with Wright. Wide eyed and green. When he got into scraps, he did look like a kid picking fights (or getting picked on) by older guys.
James has been workign out all summer in a fashion similar to what Stamkos does with Gary Roberts. I don’t think Wright has been in Roberts camp, though, but he has been busting his ass. It’s unfair to judge him by last season before we’ve seen him this season.

Of course that judgement thing goes far and wide
…which means Wishart does have a shot and shouldn’t be dismissed. Same with any of the young guys (which Don and I have done at times).
