Pouliot on waivers
As an update on the battles for roster spots here in Tampa Bay, center Marc-Antoine Pouliot was placed on waivers with the intention of sending him to the Norfolk Admirals. This comes on the heels of the extensive cuts and waiving of players on Sunday.
We didn't report it but forward Chris Durno was also waived. No word if he's been demoted or not but, by clearing waivers, he is eligible to be demoted to Norfolk.
If Pouliot and Durno are both sent to Norfolk, that brings the roster down to 26. It's assumed Cedrick Desjardins will be demoted to the AHL before the start of the season and that one of Mathieu Roy, Michael Vernace or Matt Smaby will be cut (as the Bolts plan on keeping 8 defenseman)... That brings the roster down to 24.
The final roster battle (seemingly) becomes between tryout Eric Perrin versus prospect Dana Tyrell... Both centers, both with their strengths, and Perrin with 34 years of age compared to Tyrell's 21.

You're killing me
I see “Pouliot on waivers” come across the ol’ Twitter feed, and I thought for sure I was going to get the chance to make fun of Benny boy up in Montreal. No such luck, huh? Damn. Well… let me know if the Habs come to their senses.

Perrin/Tyrell
I was actually rooting for Tyrell to make the roster, I want the young guns to make a move onto the roster. Get them some experience, but seeing the way Perrin was playing, he’s showing a lot of determination and grit. I think a one-year deal wouldn’t be a bad idea. But at the same time, you gotta let the rookies have their chance.
Torn on Tyrell
While I think Tyrell deserves to make the team, it almost seems like a waste to put him into a 4th line role with his speed and talent. It night be better for him to get top 2 line minutes in Norfolk.

Agreed there.

Seconded.
Perrin is maxed out in potentially but he’s a seasoned veteran at the professional level. No reason for DT to serve as a spare part with the big club when he can continue to develop and prove himself as a professional.

Simple thought we neglected here
One that may dictate the outcome of things: Dana Tyrell is under contract, while Eric Perrin isn’t. And Perrin has been a thorn in the side regarding getting signed (or at least John Tortorella used to complain about it)

Is it his speed?
Perhaps that’s why Tyrell/Perrin are getting the nod over Durno/Pouliot? Just a thought.
Speed is 1 factor
MT, I think penalty killing ability and the talent to step into a greater role if someone is injured may also be a factor. I’m beginning to see now why Tyrell was played on the lower lines in the preseason games, as the coaches knew he wouldn’t be cracking our top 6 this year. One advantage to having Tyrell or Perrin on the squad is they won’t be satisfied playing 4th line minutes and will push the envelope to move up the depth chart.
