Fashion changes ahead for Lightning?
Years ago, before the Lightning were going to be sold to Absolute Hockey or OK Hockey, the Lightning were looking into updating the Lightning jersey with something fresh. With the introduction of Reebok Edge, the Bolts went with the smock-like designs for the home and road jerseys (as well as updating the logo).
Of course, after 15 years of an only lightly tweaked road and home jersey design, this was met with a mix of acceptance and disdain.
Whatever your opinion, Icethetics is reporting (by way of Reebok, that the Lightning's home and road uniforms are to be tweaked (if not revamped) for 2011-12:
NEW HOME & ROAD JERSEYS
This is my favorite part. According to Reebok, the Lightning will sport brand new home and road uniforms next fall!
This is news to me and while I never thought Tampa Bay's jerseys were perfect, I am surprised to hear they're changing them again after just four seasons. My guess is it has to do with the new management team. So, changes all around in the Sunshine State.
Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment -- Owner Jeff Vinik, CEO Tod Leiweke, even Steve Yzerman -- is building a brand with the Lightning. The "World Class Organization" concept and all that. Changes being made to the jersey's aren't a shock. If the crest is modified, that is not a shock either -- though I don't expect it.
With the news that there are changes in store, I must say that I'd really look forward to something that better compliments the 3rd jersey design at current: the piping, the stripes... Not the "BOLTS" text though, thank you. I find the lack of contrast in the home dark uniforms to hurt things too much. And while the white road uniforms work with the limited blue contrasting the white... Well, where's the black? And the grey?
That's just me, though. What are you, the fan, thinking with this news?

well now i look smart after just posting a story and having the bolts top choice for change being a new jersey…..
this logo needs to be changed… lightning bolt is too big. need to bring back the whole tampa bay lightning wording or at least lightning.
Why does it need “LLightning”? Why does it need wording, period?
The whole reason “Lightning” was taken out was because wording in crests do not work. Do the Red Wings have “Detroit Red Wings” on their sweater? Does “Boston” appear on that B on their sweater? Does the flaming C in Calgary’s sweater need “Flames” taked on because you don’t get who or what the team is that’s wearing the sweater?
The team logo should represent the brand — for marketing purposes. Sure, you can have a version of a logo with wording around it — but it’s not necessary. The Lightning bolt would have worked fine. We’re just used to the text around it. It’s not a necessity.

well thats why in my post i said make a jersey with the shoulder patch.
problem is we arent the florida lightning and its the state and lightning bolt across.
personally i would love “Lightning” on our third jersey not BOLTS.
You realize why the Lightning olt is across Florida right? Tampa was Florida’s first franchise and the thought was we’d be the only franchise for a while. But Billionaires wanted in with the NHL (Disney and H. Wayne Huizinga) and the Panthers and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were born.
But the same patch — the crest without words and without the state on it — works. You don’t need to label the thing. You just need to make it look good.

It doesn’t have to be as simplistic as a lightning bolt in a circle. It can be done without any wording on it, if it’s done right.
Trouble on the ice? Wait! Andre Roy could fix it!!

Looking forward to it
I’ve said for a while the black home jerseys are a bit dated—black is no longer “in.”
I personally hope they use the blue alternate jersey as the home jersey, using the logo (or some derivative thereof) from the existing home jerseys.
Knowing Vinik and his team are backing up their insistence on “world class” by their actions, I’m looking forward to what their designers have in store.
However: remember that Todd Lieweke presided over the Seahawks when they came up with this monstrosity.
Don't expect the Alts to become the standard
The Icethetics article states that the 3rd won’t be touched.

That's almost as bad as the orange Dolphins jersey
I’m with John on losing the wording and creating a logo that projects mystique, yet making a solid statement. I would like to see a design with an array of patterns in place of the dated crest.
Change the home jersey to blue with the current logo and the alt to throwback black
My hope is that they change their home to the blue uniform and add the currently Lightning logo on that jersey and change the white one to the same template using the current logo, then the could change the alt. to the black jersey but use the original logo as a sort of throwback for the alt., just a though I think people would really like especially with the 20th anniversary coming up next season.
