An open letter to the Tampa Bay Lightning players

Dear Tampa Bay Lightning players:

We all have something to discuss, so you might want to sit down and get comfortable.

You guys aren't fooling anyone. We all know that last season - while it exceeded expectations in many ways - was an example of how you guys can play. When you want to play, that is. I'm not saying that you don't, but the games you've played thus far haven't been very encouraging.

I've been telling fellow fans that they shouldn't start panicking until Game 10. Well, people are starting to panic, anyway, and Game 10 is fast approaching. While losing early might not affect where you end up at the end of the season in the standings, it sure isn't going to help.

So I'm throwing down the gauntlet. I'm going to name names and take numbers. You guys are all on notice by the fans as of right now.

Star-divide

Vincent Lecavalier - Vinny, you've been one of the better players on the ice for most of the games so far. But, seriously, start appointing guys (other than Marty - see next point) to pick up the leadership slack. You can't do it all on your own. I suggest having a little chat with Eric Brewer, who is a former NHL team captain, about that, and maybe you two can figure things out in regards to the rest of the team.

Martin St. Louis - Consistency has been a trademark of yours over the years, and you've been very inconsistent lately, which isn't like you at all. Time to evaluate your distractions and get your focus back. Passion is good, but having a direction to focus that passion is better.

Steven Stamkos - You wanted more of a leadership role on this team, so take more of a leadership role. This isn't something that's handed to you or something you ease into; it's something where you assert yourself and just take it. And I'm not talking about goal scoring, either; although that certainly wouldn't hurt.

Ryan Malone - Playing feisty is good; getting into fights is bad. Re-evaluate what you want to accomplish, and set some personal accomplishments to work towards. Because right now you're not anywhere near where you were last season.

Steve Downie - Downie, Downie, Downie.... Center and ground yourself. You play well with an edge, yes, but you don't need to go over the edge at any given moment. Think about playing smart, setting up guys, and getting goals. Stop thinking about what you can do to spark the team. Scoring goals is all they need right now. And always keep in mind that if you so much as breathe on someone wrong, you'll get thrown in the box for it.

Victor Hedman - Okay, we need to talk about your neutral zone passing. It was barely forgivable for a second-year guy last season, and now it really needs to be dealt with. You're a smart guy, so you should be making smarter passes. Those neutral zone turnovers are just not good at all.

Teddy Purcell, Nate Thompson, Dominic Moore, Tom Pyatt, & Adam Hall - Guys, start thinking about hockey. You're all very scattered right now. Moore, I know you've been sick and had back issues, so I'll cut you a little slack. But for the rest of you, you really need to calm down and just keep things simple.

Ryan Shannon, Mattias Ritola, Blair Jones, & Brett Connolly - You guys are doing alright. There's room for improvement, but you're going in the right direction. Keep up the good work.

Matt Gilroy & Bruno Gervais - You two are improving. Just keep asking questions about where you should go and what you should be doing. It'll all make sense. Eventually.

Pavel Kubina & Brett Clark - You're about where you were last season. Still, try to not get injured with all of the shot blocking. And also try to keep playing clean. Unnecessary penalties have been killing the team. And, yeah, I'm looking at you, Kubina.

Eric Brewer & Marc-Andre Bergeron - You two are the only ones who seem to consistently know what you're doing out there. Thank you for that. It gives the fans some hope that the rest of the team will figure it all out sooner rather than later.

Mathieu Garon - Most of the fans realize that it's really the team in front of you that's struggling, and not you. Don't be afraid to scream at the guys on the ice. A lot. The guys in front of you need all the direction they can get.

Dwayne Roloson - Age is just a number, as you well know. Still, pace yourself. If the rest of the team can't figure this out soon, it's going to end up being a very long season.

And finally, Guy Boucher & the coaching staff - You can only fix the team if they want you to first. Don't kill yourself trying to talk them off the ledge if they just want to jump. Still, my presumptuous suggestion is go back to basics: passing drills, hitting drills, shooting drills. I'm talking pee wee or bantam level drills. Hey, it can't hurt, right?

Sincerely,

The fans.

Focus on the playoffs. You have a good team, and a great, but crazy coach. His style seems to work better with the urgency of the playoffs.

Trust me….as a Caps fan, this means nothing. If your sitting in the 8 spot or below after the all star break, then you can worry.

his even strength scoring rate was 3rd on the team last year (behind Stamkos and St. Louis). In the playoffs, it was first by a fairly large margin

Yep

Last year—especially during the playoffs—he was a skilled agitator, and was out-Cookeing Matt Cooke.

This year, as John mentioned last night, he’s a liability thus far.

I got to witness both TB/FLA games (the first in person), and I can say that although Florida played well, the Bolts definitely look disjointed and out of sync. I expected them to bounce back well at home and smoke the Cats, but too many bad penalties really cost them.

Too early to panic though. They’re going to find a groove and the Caps will falter eventually. I still think the Bolts can win the division.

by Ryan Meier on Oct 18, 2011 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

What makes you think the Caps will falter? They are a regular season machine, and I dont think Tampa can come within 10 points of them come playoff time. I would be surprised to see the Caps less then a #2 seed going into the playoffs. That being said, they have the ability to get bumped in round one…so we’ll just have to wait and see….

No fans in Washington are eager or excited to see this team as a #1 seed..

by SA-Town on Oct 18, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Just a hunch. I think Boudreau is overrated and the team will hit a slump at some point in the season that they can’t recover from.

I’m sure I’ll be wrong though.

I agree with this, and have thought this since I saw them at training camp.

perfect

Great post. A very accurate assessment of each and every player .I am disappointed in our record so far, I thought we would a least be at .500 at this point .Something you didn’t mention was discipline, 8 minor penalties last night that yielded 4 goals against? And to top it all off was Sean Bergenheim burning us with an unassisted short handed goal. We have a LOT of work to do ! I havn’t pushed the panic button yet but my hand is positioned directly over it.

by tazz55 on Oct 18, 2011 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

Discipline....Oh my yes. Tazz is right about that.

Cassie did call out a bunch of guys for taking stupid penalties, but it needs to be repeated and often. All of you boys need to stay out of the d*mn box. Or, if you insist on pulling that crap, at least be sure you can kill off the penalty.

BTW, you should all know that I REFUSE to panic about a season because of ANY two weeks, at least until mid-March. I am putting you all on notice that I will be optimistic and enthusiastic, even when I am talking about areas that need work.

They’re an easily panicked herd, these Tampa Bay Lightning fans. I think it has to do with two brutal years of Koules, Barrie, and Tocchet. It got pretty ugly, so this could be PTSD from that episode.

To be honest, the volume is turned way up for me right now as I travel between Preds nation (lost 3 in a row) and Bolts nation (lost 4 in a row). So I’m sort of staking out my emotional ground ahead of the next several games.

Pretty Good

I liked a lot of your opinions, but I think Thompson, Ritola and Connolly (even though he hasn’t scored yet) have been absolute studs so far. If they didn’t run into penalty trouble, then they probably would’ve beaten Florida, and all the others have been on the road. I’m not excusing them, but I think they should be given some extra slack.

by AndrewM on Oct 18, 2011 4:52 PM EDT reply actions

While Thompson, Ritola and Connolly do deserve props… I don’t think the team was that close to beating Florida. On Saturday? Yeah. On Monday? No way. even if the team stayed out of the box, they would have faltered and failed. Why? Roloson was not playing at the top of his game, adn the defense has been inconsistent for a while.

They haven’t earned slack to be given this season. Games on the road mean just as much as games at home. They know this, and they haven’t performed on par with what is expected of them.

10-Game Rule

According to this recent article by Elliott Friedman, the panickers might be justified:

Twenty teams who were not in the top eight on Nov. 1 recovered to make the playoffs. That’s an average of almost 3.5 per season. Doesn’t seem so bad, right? Depends. The safety net shreds for anyone falling too far behind. Of those 20 teams, guess how many of them were more than three points out?

Two. That’s it.

by MikeColligan on Oct 19, 2011 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I read that. But…shhh! You’re not helping with the panickers, Mike. :o\

The Silver Lining

Panickers, step away from the ledge.

As of right now (as I type this post), the Lightning are fourth in the league in goals scored and third in the league in SOG. Our problems are limited, it seems, to our DZ and NZ play.

I think their biggest problem is a transition game issue – which leads to those neutral zone & defensive zone collapses.

Expectations

Right now the entire Lightning team is suffering mostly from the pressure and expectations from the fans regarding the Bolts great season last year. The fans are very quick to enjoy one great season and tend to expect the same the next season. The players are feeling it too equally and are squeezing their sticks too tight and getting away from the game plan, the goals for is very good but the goals against is what needs to be addressed. Losing Mathias Ohlund hurts and Eric Brewers day to day status addes fuel to the fire. I hope our scouts are looking closely at our minor league team for a big mobile defenceman that can retrieve a loose puck and make that real good first pass out of our zone. I know our GM is very savvy and he will make whatever adjustment needs to be made,in the short term,a regulation win would help a whole lot…
