Nick Kypreos of Canada's Rogers Sportsnet reporting Lightning's Ryan Malone will not face league discipline for head shot on Habs Campoli.

No need to eat crow

You posted what you believed, and I assume you still believe that head shots are dangerous and ought to be illegal, regardless of the circumstance. The question of whether this particular hit violated the rules is separate from the issue of what the rules ought to be.

Wow

If this in fact, true… then think this would be a perfect time for Shanny & the league to release a video, explaining why no action will be taken.

This incident looked rather similar to several other ones that did result in suspensions. Only difference was the “aftermath” …guess that shoulder is feeling better, eh Bugsy? Figured this would be the next big case at Sheriff Shanny’s ranch and was reserving my thoughts until after a ruling came down. Again, figuring their would be plenty of discussion on this one, considering who’s involved. Still could be plenty of talk on it, just maybe now for other reasons.

One thing that is for sure..

Josh Gorges will think twice before coming to defend a teammate against Ryan Malone again. Not that he wouldn’t do it again.. just, he’ll think twice, hah.

For one, I am curious why he didn’t get an added penalty—last time I checked Georges wears a visor.

On the note of the visor, I’m betting that’s what cut him above his eyebrow.

The word is that both this and the Edler-Hall hit are seen “as examples of head moving just prior to contact.”—per @RealKyper

I, too, want a video explaining these decisions (not just a statement). I think it would help a lot, and best done before the season starts on Thursday.

You're not alone John

According to WIIM and RawCharge apparently, Even Ryan Malone was expecting a call from Shanny..

•Ryan Malone destroyed Chris Campoli Saturday night with a hit to the head and, per Puck Daddy, he said after the game that he absolutely expects to be suspended by Brendan Shanahan. [Raw Charge]

Although don’t remember seeing that on here, haha.

Legal hit. Campoli needs to keep his noggin up, he saw Malone coming while he was still on the goal line. He had ample time to protect himself and move the puck.

Once again

“Keeping [one’s] noggin up” is not justification for head shots, and it’s not likely the reason Bugsy avoided a suspension.

well, it was a contributing factor according to Shanahan

he committed to the check while the head was up, and the head moved significantly while the check was in progress, resulting in it being the principle point of contact. So you can’t just up and headshot people who are looking down, but if you start while they’re looking up and they move head positions, that’s not suspendable.

I love how it’s not just the hitter who’s being evaluated anymore. The hittee really does have something to do with this, too. It takes two people to make a hit, after all.

Looked really hard for sarcasm but...

…exactly. Shanahan was absolutely right to factor in Campoli’s leaning in after Malone commits to delivering a check.

by Michael Gallimore on Oct 3, 2011 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

No sarcasm – totally being honest. I think people are simplifying things down too much when they say that it’s all the hitter’s responsibility. Tell that to Eric Lindros; he who made a career of going thru the neutral zone with his head down.

I absolutely want this to be part of the evaluation. Otherwise it becomes “smart strategy” to make yourself vulnerable to head shots, and injuries go up.

The simple fact of the matter is that guys need to re-learn how to take a hit to minimize the injury risk just as much as guys need to re-learn how to throw hits and still minimize injury risks. It works both ways. And, it should be evaluated both ways.

OT: Anyone watching the Rags vs. Zug game?

Always find the overseas games interesting, esecially when playing against non-NHL teams. Rags are getting dominated at the moment. No Avery, again.

Not that one but I did try to find video of the Frolunda game, as one of my goalie prospects (the gloriously named Magnus Hellberg) plays for Frolunda. I found about 3 seconds of Hellberg (letting in a goal, obviously) and no stats and it took nearly an hour to get that.

BTW, Lundqvist is scary good.

He's not playing
Martin Biron is starting in net for the Rangers with Scott Stajcer serving as his backup. Rangers goalie coach Benoit Allaire told me that dressing Henrik Lundqvist today would be meaningless, and dressing four out of five nights also is difficult for a goalie, who even as a backup still has to prepare and mentally focus as if he is going to play.

Been an interesting game so far. Zug got an early 3-0 lead, now it’s tied up 3-3 @ 14:00 in 2nd

A friend of mine was just asking last week or the week before how long it’d be before Shanahan ruled on one of his former teammates. This isn’t quite it, of course. But it’s a nice precursor for it.

And like somebody else posted...

…no need to eat crow, John. I may have disagreed with your assessment of there being “no excuse” to not-suspending Malone, but I do think criticism of Malone was warranted in terms of the context with which the situation happened.

By that I mean, given that his roster spot is secure, your team is losing 4-1 with just 10 minutes to go in a “meaningless” preseason game…Malone should have made the decision to let up well before he committed to attempting to deliver a big hit. In a close regular season game, different story.

This is where my frustration with Malone is on that play. Even if he doesn’t connect with Campoli’s head there and instead just sends him ass-first to the ice, what are the odds that there isn’t a similar reaction from Gorges or another Hab? My guess: pretty low.

by Michael Gallimore on Oct 3, 2011 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree

if you’re on the ice, play your game. If you refuse to make hits in a practice game that you’d make in a real game, your playing isn’t serving its purpose.
