Tuesdays with Dani: GM meeting topics include the 1-3-1
The GM's will have their first meeting of the season in Toronto today. Dan Rosen of NHL.com writes that the 1-3-1 system will be a hot button topic being discussed at the meetings.
In response to all the questions about Guy Boucher's system, GM Steve Yzerman had some great quotes in Elliotte Friedman's 30 thoughts this week. After saying he prefers a re-alignment system where teams play home-and-home every season, he said "Every fan should get a chance to watch Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos. And with all of you guys talking about the 1-3-1, every fan will be dying to see it."
Your Lightning links:
- Jacques Lemaire defended Boucher's coaching system. Great quote on former NHL coaches criticizing Boucher: ""They have the mike, and some guys with the mike try to coach. They couldn’t coach, so they go behind the mike because they couldn’t find a way to win. So they’re no big deal." (Montreal Gazette)
- An article on assistant coach Martin Raymond who was inducted last month to the McGill University Sports Hall of Fame (Montreal Gazette)
- Carter Ashton is looking to follow in his father, Brent Ashton's footsteps (NHL)
- Not often a guy readers agree with, Ryan Lambert seems to be the voice of reason in that Flyers-Tampa 1-3-1 story from last week

Some veeeerry interesting quotes from Paul Holmgren on the whole 1-3-1 thing...
from that NHL.com article you linked to, Dani.
Puck Daddy’s review of the meeting has:
“There’s no real way to mandate how a team plays,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said. “Speaking from the Philadelphia Flyers’ standpoint, I’d like to see us attack the situation a little bit differently than we did last game. But we’ll continue to monitor and see if it becomes an issue.”

So that didn’t sit well with Holmgren, huh? Interesting. I wonder if he spoke to Laviolette about it after the fact.

Hard to believe. I’m sure it was planned well in advance, probably while watching footage in the tape room. Or hell, maybe early as last season? Who knows? Doesn’t help that the quote was taken from the GM meeting, instead of say, Flyer land.

I was all cynical and thought, “I wonder what that quote would have been if they’d won the game?”

Exactly
Or if it wouldn’t have been a national broadcasted game? Would it even be an issue at all… at the meeting or around the league? One can’t help but wonder if their was more chess being played other than just on the ice?

Gotta love JM the mighty
“Every fan should get a chance to watch Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos. And with all of you guys talking about the 1-3-1, every fan will be dying to see it.”
Just as every fan should get a chance to see Nick Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk play. Although the key words he should have included are: Every season Hopefully Lidstrom blesses us with another season and I get to see him at least one more time. And why not? He’s having one of his best seasons so far. Like the lil’ shot at the end there too, haha.

agree with you about Datsyuk. I knew he was good, but since I’ve moved to Chicago I’ve seen him a lot more. What a set of hands….
Can we get an all star line of Datsyuk/St Louis/ Stamkos this winter?

Always a possibility
Depending on how they do things this year. I’m guessing it will be the same format. Which have it say… was loving all the Red Wing/Bolts love. Team Lidstrom with Marty, Stammer & Richards… awesome!! Team Class aka Team Perfect Human!

Anyone else notice
what Ed Belfour was wearing during the HOF announcements, in Toronto before the Leafs/Sens game? Saw some footage of the ceremony on NHL.com. Everyone else was wearing very nice suits (of course) …Then ol’ Eddie comes out in jeans, blue plaid button down and a bomber jacket, haha, wtf? Stuck out like a sore thumb.
Then I saw some pics, from what I thought was the same event and Belfour was in a suit. Weirrrrrd. Especially in front of so much hockey royalty, mostly in their members jackets.
However, was glad to see close family friend of mine, former Red Wing, HOF member.. Bill Gadsby in the line-up, welcoming the new inductees. Also good to see was looking healthy, as last I heard, he had been ill.
