Game 30: New Jersey Devils at Tampa Bay Lightning

The New Jersey Devils beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4 tonight at the St. Pete Times Forum.

In a season marked so far by consistent inconsistency, the Tampa Bay Lightning have struggled to learn the lesson that anything less than a full 60 minutes of effort is not likely to yield anything but disappointment. Tonight, rather than come out fast and furious before running out of steam late, which has been a recent and ongoing trend, they started out in low gear and found themselves in a deep hole early on. In spite of coming on strong as the game progressed, the end result was a collection of efforts that just didn't quite add up to good enough to win.

"If it's not defense, it's the offense. If it's not the offense, it's the defense. Or it's the special teams. You can't be awful in certain areas and expect to win. You have to be at least average or solid in each and excel in others to give yourselves a chance to win." - Steven Stamkos

Star-divide

Dwayne Roloson made his first start in net since losing to the Ottawa Senators on December 5th. He was opposed by Johan Hedberg in goal for New Jersey. The Devils were on the board at the :28 mark when Petr Sykora scored on the game's first shot with assists from Bryce Salvador and Patrik Elias.

Dainius Zubrus doubled the Devils lead at 5:38 when he scored on assists from Matt Taormina and Adam Henrique on the power play.

The Lightning finally seemed to shake off their jet lag from their recent four-game road trip with about three minutes left in the period and it paid off when Steve Downie got them on the board at 17:34. Matt Gilroy and Steven Stamkos chipped in with assists.

Less than 90 seconds later, recently recalled Blair Jones tied the game at 18:54 with his first NHL goal since January of 2010, thanks to help from Dana Tyrell and Gilroy.

While the overall effort was better, the second period started out looking a lot like the first, at least on the scoreboard. The first shot of the period went in again when Zach Parise scored at :56 on assists from Henrique and Henrik Tallinder. Roloson was pulled immediately afterward, having allowed three goals on the twelve shots he faced, and replaced by Mathieu Garon.

The Devils lead was extended back to two when Parise fed Ilya Kovalchuk on a breakaway created by a flukey bounce of the puck at 5:42.

In what loooked like a carbon copy of Kovalchuk's goal, again created by an odd bounce, Henrique scored New Jersey's sixth shorthanded goal of the season at 13:23. Parise and Mark Fayne contributed assists.

In spite of outshooting New Jersey 17-6 during the period, the Lightning headed to the second intermission down 5-2.

After an extended series of uncalled roughhousing in front of the New Jersey net that eventually led to the Lightning's Downie and the Devils' Alexander Urbom and Tim Sestito in the penalty box, Stamkos gave the Bolts some hope when he scored his 17th goal of the season on the power play at 9:29. Dominic Moore and Vincent Lecavalier offered assists.

With Garon pulled for an extra skater, Stamkos brought the Bolts to within one at 33.5 with help from Pavel Kubina and Lecavalier but there just wasn't enough time to net the equalizer.

"It's important to know where we're going and what the direction is...I asked the players to compete, no mattter what. We all know that it's extremely difficult to play that first game back from a long road trip...we fought. We fought with everything we had. We wanted to give a show to our fans. We care about our fans...They were there, backing us up and we didn't want to quit...we make that one mistake and it costs us right away and it's been like that for a while. It's tough mentally...It's not what happens to you, what matters is how you react to it...I don't think that if we would have quit a while ago because we were'nt winning, we could have given that show to our fans (tonight) and still fight. That's important.'" - head coach Guy Boucher

The Lightning will be in action again Thursday night when they host the Calgary Flames.

Game notes:

  • Prior to the game, the Devils acquired former Lightning defender Kurtis Foster from the Anaheim Ducks. He did not play in tonight's game.
  • Earlier today the Lightning signed free agent forward Antti Miettinen to a two-year, one-way contract. Miettinen appeared in 20 games with Ak-Bars Kazan of Russia's Kontinental Hockey league, with two goals and eight total points. He was originally drafted by the Dallas Stars in the seventh round (224th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
  • In a busy day for transactions, Lightning defenseman Evan Oberg was recalled from Norfolk.
  • Former Bolts assistant coach Adam Oates is now serving in that role with the Devils.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning honored Susan Jacobs as a Lightning Community Hero during the first period of tonight’s game against the New Jersey Devils. Jacobs, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, will contribute the money to her charity of choice, Wheels Of Success. Established in 2003, Wheels Of Success strives to help families obtain or continue work by providing them with reliable transportation through a program of car repairs, vehicle replacement, related licensing services, car payments, down payments and car-care classes in both Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties. Through the support of dedicated partners in the automotive industry, the organization obtains vehicles through purchase or donation and restores them to good running condition. For nearly a decade, Jacobs has worked tirelessly to assist those in need who have fallen on hard times due to a variety of reasons. As a result of Jacobs’ goodwill and hospitality, dozens of individuals and families have been able to commute to and from work, take their children to school and fulfill daily necessities such as grocery shopping and making trips to the doctor’s office.

I said this in the game thread

but this is how Downie needs to spark the team. Not getting in fights (he did that late, but I’m pretty sure he didn’t start it), but rather elevating his level of compete when no one else is. He was the only guy playing for 10 minutes. Then the team joined in and actually played pretty well, with the exception of:

*Roloson. I don’t know if he’s just done or whether he’s on an extended cold streak, but please keep his leash short these days.
*Clark. Just too slow. Cost us big at least once, maybe twice.
*Gilroy. Made some nice passes. Had a couple assists. But his turnovers at the point are possibly the biggest reason that we give up so many goals in transition.

Do want to point out that Blair Jones played the best game I’ve seen him play. And that the BoltProspects recap is absolutely spot on.

If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

Downie was getting cross-checked—I counted almost a half-dozen times—by Urbom, but didn’t respond until Urbom cross-checked him into the net like he was trying to score a goal.

Yeah, that was pretty messed up

But at the same time, we were lucky Downie didn’t get an instigator to even out the penalties, cause he was throwing punches way before the other guy could even drop his stick.

So much for the Bucs lowering ticket prices, mine went up AGAIN!!!!

Little things for Lightning wins

Great seats at last nights game, could see all the bad things the team is doing. The good news is they are all easy fixes. 1) PP is predictable, get in the zone everyone becomes a statue, Stamkos sets up for his one timer, Vinny plays catch with the point men and Bugsy stands on the goal line. They need movement down low to create chaos for the opposing teams “D” . 2) When they are in posession of the puck in their own end the “D” Men refuse to skate with the puck and constently send stretch passes to covered forwards losing posession of the puck 3) Hesitation shooting the puck, plenty of open nets, too late shooting, and telegraphing shots 4) (does not apply to 44) Beat the other team to the puck, and if you lose the race hit the opposing player let him know the price for the next chase, bet you will see more turn overs 5) when in front of the other teams net they are too close for all the juicy rebounds, 1 forward back up 3 ft (Shades of Espo) 6) Kabina (Good fight) Clark just too slow, no support from backchecking forwards. all this and still 37 shots (I think) just imagine how many with some puck control.

Little things for Lightning wins part 2

7) Gilroys turnover (see #1) otherwise plays solid game and his coverage and angles on the puck carrier are excelant, even heard him calling coverages to our so called vet “D” men. Great aquisition, A+ to the Lightning. Kabina, Think its time to say syonara, cant keep up with the kids, Good fight though maby consider a role as team goon. 8) Bugsy get off the goal line and get in front of the net (a la’ Detroit) and cause havoc with the “D” 9) Purcell is either injured or completly lost, saw no drive, absolutely no motivation to win puck battles, if he,s not playing injured bench him! 10) Best game for Tyrell and Jones, future looks bright. Now for the sore spot 11) Roli it,s time. It was like the dream where you are trying to run and the monster keeps getting closer. reflexes are night and day from last year. Take a bow though, you earned it. Garon has great reflexes but gets killed on rebounds, Got to work on absorbing the puck and limit rebounds.

In his post-game press conference, Boucher said the team “didn’t have any legs” because of the long road trip.

That may be, but the first 10 minutes of hockey was the worst Lightning hockey I’ve seen in person. Completely disastrous: last to pucks, slow, blind passes easily picked off by the Devils. Horrendous. The Bolts did a great job coming back—but the team was deflated by the third goal, and I had no realistic expectation of the Lightning coming back again.

Our PP is terrible. They’re moving—but not nearly enough—and they seem utterly lost and unsure without #26 on the ice. Hurry back, Marty!

The 5-4 score was a lot closer than the game—the Devils completely out-played and out-hustled us. Hedberg, for his part, made some very good saves—unlike Roli. How can Roli take his pad off the post so quickly—at let Parise get a soft goal? The trouble with Roli is he’s untradeable: old, and a $3.5M contract. Garon’s incapable of being a #1 over the long haul.

Two, two-on-one breakaways with Parise? That’s going to be a goal every time. The SHG by Kovalchuk (very nearly a 2-on-0) was going to be a goal against any team in the league.

I had no idea what the Devils player was doing knocking down Garon, but I’m glad Kubina made him pay for it. I had hoped that would be a rallying point for the Bolts—but no. MAB played a very good game defensively, and I thought the Norfolk connection (Hall, Tyrell, Jones) had a good game.

I don’t want to see the Bolts play this poorly again. It was depressing.

On another note, I mentioned in another thread I was interested to see the size of the crowd in the SPTF given the team’s recent struggles. My hunch was correct: the team’s lack of resounding success is making a difference in the attendance. The official attendance was over 17,000—but I would be surprised if there were more than 14,000 actually in the seats.

I'd imagine the players would want an overhaul to

this discourages NHL clubs from signing Euro players, as it encourages them to wait for someone else to sign them first and snipe them off waivers

EXACTLY.

And not always for the right reasons either. How many times has a team, near the bottom, with some extra cap space, signed a player… just so another team (usually a division rival) won’t get him.

Not only does that hurt the whole league… but it sure sucks for the player(s).

I think we need to make a move for a goalie.

The team IMO is playing like they did with Graham back there, with no confidence. Just seems like the team fears that if they give up a break-away or an odd-man rush, the other team will score, and last night.

Problem with this course of action is what do you do with two goalies—one apparently past his prime and overpaid for his play thus far, the other incapable of shouldering #1 duties?

Your underlying point is germane nevertheless: the JM will have his greatest test yet of his Jedi powers yet.

As far as I'm concerned, Roli can go.

After the first goal, I told the guy sitting next to me that it looks like Roli is gonna work on that 5 goals against average, and he did the best he could before being pulled.

The “JM” needs to make a move, either making a trade or pulling up a kid from the minors. But what’s going on now can’t continue, something has to be done.

Garon has possibly been our best signing of the offseason. He’s great for the 1B or heavily worked 2 role. But it doesn’t help to have a good #2 if your #1 decided to show his age all of a sudden

I don’t know whether its age or something else, and in the end it doesn’t really matter. Things can’t go on the way they have. But you’re right. Garon’s not going to be able to do what needs to be done for the next 3 months, either, especially with no one behind him that the team can count on.

I’m still very hesitant to call for Tick to get the call up. It’s within the realm of possibility that he could get thrown into the deep end and still swim, but I haven’t heard a single report saying they think he’s ready for the big time. If he stays where he is, he could get there in a season or two, but right now, a call up could ruin him and with that all the time and $$ the team has invested in him. That could be crippling the team long term for little to no short term benefit.

Which leaves a trade. God help us all.

I personally believe the Gilroy

signing was our best off season move. Although he has made some mistakes, they are at least born out of aggresive actions. I think an argument can be made that he is our best performing Dman at this juncture.
I think the Garon move is tempered by the loss of Mike Smith. Who really would not have cost that much more for a young goalie who over the last half of the season really looked like he was coming into his own. This year he has made further strides. As well, I think that Smitty was a real locker room presence and I think that is sorely missed. I was watching the Coyotes the other night against the Blackhawks and the post game antics between Smitty and his teammates were quite amusing. I think his potential and contribution toward team chemistry were not fully appreciated. This team is sullen and disponsive and could real use some personalities on the bench.

How many times a game

are our forwards getting clobbered in front of the net. Even after the whistle has blown every one of our guys gets a glove stuffed in his mug or a stick in the back.
When was the last time our D did the same. It’s more like Callahan stuffing his glove in Hedmans face after the whistle. It’s a safe haven green zone around our net for opposing players. On the O side, the earlier poster was right, Malone needs to get in front of the goalie, not off to the side.
Our team is the softest in the league bar none. I’m sick of watching our D and forwards merely take backhanded swipes at the puck rather than crash the boards and move it along.
Purcell, get your head out of your A** and start working. I miss Bergenheim.
Roli is toast. Even when he has stopped the puck it looks more like he is just in the way rather than actually making a save.I really miss Mike Smith.
Boucher, enough of the excuses. Your team flys on their own private jet and if they don’t have legs from a road trip it’s either they have no desire or they are up too late partying. Or in the case of at least 3 or 4 guys, they are just too old. Pavel Kubina for example
Stamkos, Tyrell and Jones had legs last night and Jones had an even rougher road trip.
This team looks very old to me right now. I personally would rather see us bring up the Johnson, Conacher, Ashton line from Norfolk and turn those kids loose than watch half hearted veterans swipe at the puck and play soft. Bring up Barberio and his +13. He at least brings a physical element to a very soft D. There’s no way he could be worse than Kubina.
I’ll keep going and watching but I’m getting fed up doing so. I’ll be the first to admit that I think we overachieved last year but I hope that doesn’t cloud managements present vision. This is not a team with the present ability to contend for the cup. Even the playoffs are looking more remote.

Can’t ask a guy to be what he isn’t. And he isn’t the only leader on the team. Malone’s been hit & miss in the leadership department, and Stamkos – who professes to want more of a leadership role – has been pretty much invisible. Kubina’s sort of faded into the woodwork himself. More guys need to step up in the leadership department.

I wouldn’t have minded seeing someone leading the cheers, I know in Carolina they have a guy with a blow horn thing that leads cheers throughout the game along with the cheerleaders, it is pretty loud and does a good job keeping the crowd involved especially in big spots. Cheerleaders can’t really compete. And neither can piped in music from professional sports

If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

yea the live pipe organ was pretty awesome though

but as far as pumping up the crowd it was pretty pointless too.

I love having a live pep band during games. I think that’s awesome. But then, I would – I was a band nerd in high school. ;o)

College cheerleaders will teach and lead cheers still. But for professional sports, they are pretty pointless – except as eye candy. And I don’t have a problem with the eye candy part, since the men like it and those particular women are willing to be it. Except in hockey, there’s just no real opportunity to ogle them – so there’s genuinely no point.

Those really are great shots!

If you’re going to a game again any time soon, let us know and if you want, we’ll use one of your pictures for the game recap. With full credit, of course.

thanks hopefully I will get a chance to catch some more games

I work at night so it is hard to me to match nights off with the games but if I do I will let you know.

Great pics indeed.

Still don’t understand why they didn’t switch to clear posts between the glass during the renovation. Pretty sure we updated to the wider panes of glass for better viewing, so why not have clear posts, instead of Bolt blue?

Why don't we give our 2006 #1

pick a shot. Riku Helenius. After all, we passed on Claude Giroux to take him that year. He seems to be tearing it up in goal this year over in Finland or Sweden or wherever. Less than a 1.5 GAA with 95-96%saves average.
How long does it take to groom a goalie. Ehnroth and Nuevirth are both playing in NHL and they were taken in the 2nd round that year. Mason in the 3rd.

There’s some sort of issue with Helenius’ contract that I haven’t been able to get the straight skinny on. To my understanding, although the Lightning still control his rights within the NHL, he is actually unsigned at this point. I don’t believe he ever signed his qualifying offer this summer. Then there’s the problem with the adjustment from European hockey to North American hockey. Rink size plays a huge factor in the speed of the game and in puck tracking around the net.

As far as how long it takes, it takes a loooooooong time. Neither Tokarski nor Janus are in any way behind where they were expected to be. For most guys it’s going to be about 3 to 4 years in North American minors, coming up to the NHL around age 25 or 26. Goalies also tend to have a wider range of ages when drafted. For every young bloomer you have several draftees and free agent goalie prospects who don’t make it until much later. Let’s just say there’s a reason so few goalies go in the first or second round.

My big fear with Tokarski is that if he’s pulled up too early he’ll be another Steve Mason.

Thanks for the info

I just also read he had some military obligations and a shoulder injury that set him back a year. I just can’t see us continuing down the goalie path we are on. At this point I’m axious for a change.

You heard it here first.

Rinne to the Bolts for Garon, Kubina, and a bag of Gilroy-signed pucks. Eklund gives it a +5.

Thinking about this a little more...

In the past couple of days I’ve tried to do a quantitative comparison between the team’s composition of last year (where they admittedly over-performed) and this year.

The biggest differences to the roster are mainly Lundin and Bergenheim landing with Minnesota and Florida, respectively. I’m not willing to say that either of them played well enough last year to have their absence missed as much as it seems.

If not the roster, what other differences are there? I can think of only one: Wayne Fleming. It is readily apparent his coaching is missed on the PP, and no one outside of the team knows what other mentoring/coaching role(s) he held to the players and the other coaches.

Get well, Wayne—we miss you, and the team does, too.

Very true.

I should know this, but… has their been anyone “filling in” for Wayne Fleming? (Tried wording that the most respectable way possible.) Like a interim coach of sorts. We all know he can’t be replaced and hopefully doesn’t need to be. But at the same time, don’t think he’d want it to hurt the team, any more than it already does.

And yes indeed, please get well soon, Wayne.

Did TBO.com CHANGE the article linked above???

Read the same article yesterday and swear it said something about Yzerman saying “this is something that needs to be looked at” or something like that. In regards to the CBA/waiver situation.

Was looking for the article again today and finally thought I found it when I saw this..

You’re not alone The JM thinks the system needs work, too (link to tampabay.com article).

Now when you read it, I don’t see anything about it. Same link. Is it just me?

Nevermind. I’m an idiot. The link posted above was different, than the TBO.com one I was looking at. BUT.. I do remember that TBO article having something about Yzerman saying “it needs to be looked at” also. Now it’s not there. Who knows
