Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Tuesdays with Dani: Steve Downie fined $2,500

A couple days later, but the NHL has made public that Steve Downie was fined the maximum $2,500 allowed under the CBA for leaving the bench on a legal line change to become involved in an altercation in the game against the Rangers. Is it just me or the maximum of $2,500 seem like a drop in the bucket when fining an NHL player?

$2500 is the max for that?

Hell, next time he does it (under the right circumstances, of course) we’ll just pass a hat around the arena.

$2500 is the max fine the league can assess on any player for any infraction. Only if a player is suspended does he lose any more than $2500.

No, I think Erin Andrews will get more than $2500.

Oh, you were talking about Downie’s fine. My bad.

Hmm.
for leaving the bench on a legal line change to become involved in an altercation

…Didn’t even know you could still get fined for that? Kind of like still getting a ticket, even though you weren’t speeding.

As far as, $2,500 being “drop in the bucket” fine for an NHL player… key word(acronym) being NHL player. Not NFL, NBA, MLB or some other crazy over payed sport. NHL players and hockey players in general, make squat compared to other “sports” …especially considering all the work they put in, year round. But that’s a whole other story all together.

Per the CBA, the league minimum salary for the 2011-2012 season is $525,000. Yep; $2500 is a drop in the bucket.

Not compared to other sports/leagues. And (as you know) $525,000 is what you get on a one way contract, which is rare for young players on the way up. Even though a 2-way contract usually requires much more work and travel. Point being: you truly have to love the game, in order to “make it” in hockey. No players out there “just for the money” …that’s for sure. Unlike some other sports.
