Welcome to Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals! Grab a cookie, get a drink, and take a seat. This is going to be a fun ride.

On a more somber note, in recognition of Derek Boogaard’s very unexpected passing, feel free to leave your condolences and memories of him here at Hockey Wilderness: Derek Boogaard Memorial

Win or lose, I'm proud of these guys.

but I’m not ready to predict anything. just happy to watch at this point.

I do recall when I was at the TIA Marriot for game & of the Pens series, I watched half the game with a fellow Bolt fan on his way out of town. He thought that if the Bolts could win that series, they had as good a chance as anyone to go all the way…honestly I feel the same way. I knew we could hang with the Caps, I feel the same way about Boston.

I was surprised to find out that prior to this season, 3 out of 5 teams that forced a game 7 after going in an 0-3 hole won game 7…so this season’s outcomes buck historical trends. But of course it’s a “small sample”…

Vancouver is the favorite at those numbers

Bolts are the long shot. I actually think the Sharks are by far the best bet at those numbers. I’d take them over the Bruins

by Incipient_Senescence on May 14, 2011 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

OKay. I’ll take your word for it. I have NO idea how to read that line or who is the favorite. I just figured that the Lightning were the long shot, based on what was being said so far in the playoffs.

Trouble on the ice? Wait! Andre Roy could fix it!!

by Tina Robinson on May 14, 2011 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Vancouver is 1.7 to 1

Boston is 2.5 to 1, Sharks 3 to 1, Bolts 3.5 to 1 when you reduce everything down

by Incipient_Senescence on May 14, 2011 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh. Thank you. From that then, it looks like the Lightning are not much more of a long shot than SJ.

no one giving any love to the Bolts

But last I looked Vegas had the money line for the series +120 Boston, -140 Tampa Bay

Considering that Boston has home ice advantage, seems that Vegas is not entirely on the “Lighting have no chance” bandwagon…

I’d have them attacking hard to open the second. Force them to make mistakes and get the 3 goal cushion back. Nice job of shot blocking and staying out of the sin bin by the Bolts in the first. Keep it up and we’ll erase Boston’s 5 on 5 advantage in the first couple games.

Lionel Messi is the best soccer player in the world

and has been for several years. has won at least one champions league with Barcelona (and will play for another chmapionship this year) and led Argentina in the world cup last summer.

there is only one primarily English-speaking country that calls the game “football”

I do watch World Cup matches. Other than that, I just cannot seem to get into soccer. I do promise I’ve tried. Not sure what’s I’m doing wrong… :)

by Tina Robinson on May 14, 2011 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

ah, would've figured you'd know Messi from the Cup

as with all sports, the key is being emotionally invested in one team. I am emotionally invested with the USA, so I watch a lot more international matches than club. excited about the Gold Cup this June (hosted by the US, it’s the championship for North/Central America and the Carribean)

the second key is understanding the game. being a hockey fan should make for an easier transition than some other sports, but having played soccer for years, I had that already

by Incipient_Senescence on May 14, 2011 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

What nation? Like I said, I’m afraid I don’t follow soccer a lot.

And yes, I (sort of) translate soccer to hockey, so I get the game that way, but for some reason, I just can’t get excited about it. I to watch occasionally though.

the Gold Cup? this summer, it’s a tournament hosted in the US (host cities: Dallas, LA, Detroit, Charlotte, Miami, Tampa, Chicago, New York, Kansas City, DC, and Houston) for the championship of our region. the winner plays in the Confederations Cup two years ago.

teams in the competition: Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Cuba, Honduras, Jamaica, Grenada, Guatemala, USA, Canada, Panama, Guadeloupe

Listening to the Versus coverage

You’d think the Bruins Power Play was all the rage. Not once did they mention the Bolts killing off all three penalties, including the last 2 with a couple of their primary PK guys in the box. Thomas has kept the Bruins in it to this point but the Bolts have dominated at times.

Nice to know that it isn’t too hard to get the Bruins off their game and get them swinging. The Caps & the Pens had much better discipline.

you know, I think the Bruins were trying to send a message

but it really got lost in translation. They are supposed to be so big, and give the Lightning “fits”, and they were thoroughly beaten tonight.

And then they goon it up at the end. That crap is not going to put any fear in the Bolts, and Boucher will not let the team lose any respect for it. Some old-timers rue this “new age” approach, but I think it might end up un-nerving the Bruins more.

They wanted to instill some fear. They are going to get no reaction. I think that’s going to bother them, and if they start taking more bad penalties it’ll hurt them.

It is late, I am going to officially close this off

The Bolts roll into Boston and overcome Tim Thomas, winning 5-2 to take Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final. Goals by Sean Bergenheim, Brett Clark, Teddy Purcell, Marc-Andre Bergeron, and Simon Gagne for the Lightning. Tyler Seguin and Johnny Boychuk scored for Boston.

You already endured a long layoff before game 1. We get another layoff — until Tuesday — for Game 2.
