ECF Game 1 recap: Tampa Bay Lightning (5) at Boston Bruins (3)

Photo

2011_ecf_header_medium

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals by a score of 5-2.

Both teams had significant time off between series, but that didn't seem to make a difference. Both were on their game. At least, they were at first.

Then the Lightning scored three goals in 85 seconds in the first period. Sean Bergenheim continued his playoff goal scoring dominance by getting the first goal at 11:15 of the first (assists from Dominic Moore and Victor Hedman). Then Brett Clark scored 19 seconds later (unassisted), making it 2-0 Lightning. And finally, Teddy Purcell scored (also unassisted) to make it 3-0 at 12:40.

After that, the Bruins didn't have a chance. They appeared to be rattled, and never managed to regain their composure for long. Rookie Tyler Seguin scored 3:19 after Purcell did in the first, and that gave the Bruins some life, but in the end they weren't able to follow that up with much of anything.

Star-divide

When it became apparent that the Bruins weren't going to win the game, they became undisciplined and took penalties. That's definitely a good to know. Because if you can get a team to take penalties, then you get more chances to score, and it looks like getting the Bruins off balance might not be such a difficult thing to do.

Let me put it another way. Both the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals were pretty disciplined teams. That is, they didn't resort to taking unnecessary penalties when they were seriously losing. And since the Lightning were able to get past them, it might not be as difficult to get past the Bruins. ("Might" being the key word there.)

With this win, the Lightning have now won eight playoff games in a row. Dwayne Roloson also becomes the oldest goaltender since Hockey Hall of Famer Jacques Plante to do that. Plante won eight playoff games in 1969 at the age of 40.

Game 2 against Boston is on Tuesday, 17 May. Game time is at 8 pm Eastern on Versus. However, you might want to check out Game 1 between the Vancouver Canucks and the San Jose Sharks, which is tomorrow night, 15 May, also at 8 pm Eastern on Versus. Whoever wins that series may be the Lightning's next opponent, after all.

To the casual fan

Don’t think this series will as easy as the boys made it look in the first period. The Bruins—and especially Tim Thomas—were not on their game.

Their PK was good, not great, last night, holding the Bolts’ PP to 1-for-4.

I was encouraged to see the zebras keep their whistles out of their mouths for once.

"[The Lightning] are uncanny. When they want to get a goal, it's like they just snap their fingers or hit a button. They just dial it up. You can see it. It's like they flip a switch. When they are down, it's just like they think, 'we know we are going to score.' I don't know what it is, it leaves [the opposition] flabbergasted." - Mike Knuble, 3 May 2011

by MTBoltFan on May 15, 2011 9:02 AM EDT reply actions

I'll take 1-4 on PP every game

and see what that does. bigger was the 4-4 on the kill.

Yeah, the 3 goals in the first were a bit of luck – but isn’t a lot of any sport luck? And it’s not like the mistakes the Bruins made scored the goals themselves; the Lightning had to finish the job.

I’ve read some comments from Bruins fans and writers about how the layoff made them rusty, but the Bolts had 2 more days off. At this point of the season I can expect that a little timing will be off at the beginning of a game after a week off, but the time to rest/heal is more important. So the “rust from the layoff” just doesn’t fly. One team was ready, the other was not.

And I think there were some other psychological issues at play. To some extent I think the Bruins were surprised not to see the 1-3-1 in the 1st period, and the goon plays at the end did not elicit the emotional reaction they wanted. Dominick Moore’s comment of “stuff happens” is right out Guy Boucher’s textbook – react the way you need to react, not the way the other guy wants you to react.

Lucic now has 3 misconducts in the playoffs, so we can be pretty sure he is not above playing dirty. I would hope the league give serious consideration to suspending him for game 2.

But we all know – winning game 1 is relatively easy compared to winning 4 of 7. Nothing has been achieved in this series yet.

He’s a punk, and deserves every bit of discipline—supplementary or not—he receives.

It was getting too far ahead to take seriously

but a Wings/Bolts final had storybook written all over it. Student vs Teacher, the old ties the Lightning had to D-town in the Bill Davidson years…

Very poor showing.

Tampa took it to Boston.

I fortunetly missed most of the game due to a prior commitment, and I’m glad as from my perspective there wasn’t much worth watching after that 85 second melt down.

At least Seguin seems to respond when given a chance.

Back at it on Tuesday. Hoping for better performances.

by 13_Legion on May 15, 2011 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, from Lecavalier, St. Louis and Stamkos

not that they played poorly…but would be nice for them to put a few biscuits in the basket.

I think, after reading a lot of comments, that the Bruins, and especially their coach, don’t think the Lightning can hang with them.

Seems pretty much what the Caps thought.

Also, please look at the caliber of teams each swept in the 2nd round. Flyers had disarray in goal, and had been fading for a month. Caps were coming into round 2 strong, having dispatched the Rags with ease. And the layoff/rust talk – please stop it. The Lightning had a longer layoff.

by tampa_edski on May 15, 2011 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, you trying to give me lessons on how to watch the game?

Don’t believe I took anything away from Tampa’s performance.

They came ready, and Boston obviously didn’t. I never take it as a lesser effort by the winning team when the other team plays poorly. Good teams take every opportunity they grab, and the Bolts sure did it. Some of the local talk radio up here, you could tell who just started following the Bruins because they based a quick series win on the fact that the Bruins beat Tampa 3 -1 this season, but ignored the fact that Boston was attrocious against Montreal during the regular season. I do not see another 85 second melt down, though.

On to the second round discussion, I could also say that you pretty much had Washington’s playoff history going for you. They’ve been “strong in the first round” for years now. Philly had it’s issues, so I agree there. That was a sweet, sweet series win though. And this year, we did drop the first two at home to the Habs and came out on top.

I figured a split in the first two games in Boston, and I’d always prefer to take Game 2 in that situation when the team is about to go on the road.

Still saying 6 game series right now.

by Cornelius Hardenbergh on May 16, 2011 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with the 6 games left

But this was supposed to be the Caps year. We couldn’t hang with them. Too much skill…blah blah. Caps had no heart for the 2 games I saw – don’t know what they looked like for games 1 and 2…

Comparing 1st rounds, there’s a similarity. Your guys went down 0-2, the Bolts fell to 1-3. I don’t see any reason why this shouldn’t be a hard fought, long series, but I also felt that way against the Caps. They never showed up. Not sure it was a flaw in their team chenistry, or they just didn’t take Tampa Bay seriously.

I think a part of the Bruins problems last night was the bought the hype that their big D-Men would give the Lightning “fits” and did not take their oponent seriously. That’s how you meltdown giving up 3 goals in 90 seconds…

by tampa_edski on May 15, 2011 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I said before the playoffs Boston would win in 6. I still believe that.

That said, I thought the Caps would win in 7.

I must say I don’t get these comments I hear “dispatched the rags with ease” yeah to the casual fan u look at 5 game series u may think it was easy but if you with strong interest watched every game you would know that any of 3 losses the “rags” took could have one blown whistle or one bounce easily gone the other way and it was a hard fought series…so I don’t think its really accurate to say the rangers were dispatched of with ease despite it being a 5 game series…

I wouldn't say it was a close series. You guys were living off Lundqvist playing out of his mind.

Close series go 6/7 games. Not 5. Yeah, there were some good battles, but if Lundqvist didn’t stand on his head for the 1st 4gms you guys would have been blown out on the scoreboard. You were dominated on puck possession and no offensive support killed you guys. You just can’t call a 5gm series close either, finding ways to win games is what separates the great teams from the rest.

in the end

4/5 game series are “easy”. 6/7 games series are “clowse”

heck, the sweep of the Caps were all cllose games, but the body of work says the Caps were swept.

and in reality they were. they didn’t capitalize (no pun) when they could have to alter the path of the series.

Good points and I do agree better teams find ways to win games and no question we were offensively challenged..I guess I’ve just always thought of gettin by with ease or looking at it in that way as just completely dominating a team…to me an overtime and double overtime that could’ve easily went the other way or never got to overtime just felt like we were much more in that series than a 5 game exit would show if you just looked at it from the outside..but I suppose its neither here nor there now anyways…just a little tingle of my pride I guess lol

Crowd was good, though because of the longer daylight hours, you really couldn’t see the game projected onto the parking garage until a few minutes into the 1st.

All told, I think I prefer to watch road games at home, personally. The writer may have a better summary and a better experience, so your mileage may vary.

Bergie will probably enter the low – mid 2 million dollar range with his playoff performance. He still needs to put up higher regular season numbers to crack the 3 million dollar area. What are the Lightning’s cap space predictions for the offseason?

Right now they’re about $9.5 under the cap, but figure most of that will be taken up by re-signing Stamkos.

I did some rough calculations a week ago or so, and Teddy and Bergie’s play this year will make it a difficult task to sign both and all the FAs we’d like to keep (Hall, for one).

They’ll lose a few players, tho. Mike Smith, for instance, likely won’t be back. So there’s more available than just that $9.5M. Particularly when younger (and cheaper) guys like Blair Jones and Mattias Ritola are stepping up into roles.
