Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Raw Charge

or, as the regulars like to call it, “Here”.

Reports earlier say Steve Downie is a game-time decision, while at least one playe rstated that Downie will play. Keep an eye open on that one.

One small request, please: If you’re bitter about certain attacks that Boston blogs are launching at Tampa, do us all a favor and IGNORE THEM. Don’t vent about them. It amounts to grasping at straws to insult people while riling up their own base of readers “Yeah, well, you’re funny looking and your belly button sticks out! Top that! HAHAHAHA!”

Something you’d expect from a would-be bully. You want to give him your lunch money or beat him?

The risk with Smith

He gets cocky when he gets confident. And when he gets cocky and over-confident, he gets careless and makes mistakes.

I have to trust Boucher’s judgement, but I am a little shocked.

Need to give him a chance, yeah he has those flaws but its the Playoffs and he had 2 periods on Saturday to show them but didn’t.

by coasterg on May 23, 2011 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Me pointing this out isn’t trying to say Smith shouldn’t be in there. It’s more like addressing what his flaw is when he gets the start: Hubris.

8k and Dig Deep might recall the TB / Carolina game that got the Rangers into the playoffs. Smith’s positioning was bad and he was very active around the net. Too active.

He’s been better in relief though.

by John Fontana on May 23, 2011 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Smith has been good

But I still think that he has yet to face sustained offensive pressure from the Bruins like Roloson has. Which isn’t to say that he isn’t capable of it, and I trust Boucher to make the right choice here, but it still a little scary.

A lot of players switch it up in the offseason. Tho, most just stick with the positions they regularly play. There’s usually a guy on any given team that plays as a defenseman or a forward who can also play goalie, tho.

Vinny, by the way, started out as a defenseman.

When the Pens won the Stanley Cup, Crosby had his childhood friends play a game of street hockey for it. I thought that was cool. Anyways, he was a goalie in that game, and I’ve seen some video of it – CBC or something. He was actually pretty good. And I’ve seen him pull some moves during games when there’s been an open net. I’d like to see him suited up in goalie gear and on the ice, tho.

Shots are 14-4 Lightning; four players have two shots each. Hits are 8-6 Bruins; six players have a hit each. Faceoffs are 58%-42% Bruins; Lecavalier is 5-3 (63%). Tampa Bay has three turnovers, two steals, and five blocked shots.

Textbook 1st Period

Boucher prepared the men well and they played a textbook perfect 1st period in a road playoff game. I counted one scoring chance for the B’s and it was of the weaker variety. That being said they need to shoot the puck more often on the PP. Skip the picture perfect goals and get the puck on net, create chances and force the Bruins to commit more penalties. Purcell especially needs to use that shot on the PP. I loved the big hits by Ohlund, Brewer, Clark and Hedman early in the game. They sent the message that the Bolt D-zone is their turf and you’ll need to fight for every inch.

But we were in a bad spot as our PP didn’t convert on numerous chances. Bolts need to carry the play in the 3rd. The Bruins defense is tired and prone to making mistakes if we can generate enough pressure.

Technically, you’re not supposed to hit someone who isn’t playing the puck. Of course, that’s spottily enforced – as are all the NHL rules. But still. That’s what was called in this instance. Downie made the hit after the puck had moved on.

I didn't see it all positive on our end

By the third, they looked winded. The Bruins were throwing bodies where and when they can to damage and further drag down the Lightning.

Here’s a question: When Good Old Cockroach Campbell rules against Downie, who gets inserted into the lineup if Bergenheim is also out?

by John Fontana on May 23, 2011 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

it wasn't all positive

but we dominated early on and really should’ve been ahead by more than one. The play was roughly even or slight edge to Boston in the second, and we had the better of it in the third. Overall, I think we outplayed them slightly, but they got the bounces.

And if we’re missing Downie, Bergenheim, and Kubina on Wednesday, I don’t know what we do, but I don’t have high hopes.

I don't care what anyone says, the bolts were severely screwed by the officials

I’ve never seen such an obvious case of bias in my life. There were three penalties that were not even debating. I mean they were as obvious as the rapture was not. Blair Jones gets trucked in mid ice without the puck? No call. Downie gets tripped by himself behind the net? No call. The Bergeron hooks our guy so severely that he does a 360? No call. What the fuck? How can anyone watch this and even remotely think there wasn’t something fishy going on?

I don’t think it is “rigged”, but rather the officials wanted to swallow their whistle. But to call Downie was just too juicey of an opportunity, so they did it. And the swallow the whistle strategy is fine as long as the penalty isn’t debatable. They weren’t even remotely debatable.

Not to be “that guy” but the Bolts got away with a few non-calls late also. Seems like both teams were having a tripping free-for-all in the final 10 minutes. Thought that Boston got away with a couple, definitely, but it’s not like Tampa was getting whistled for the tiniest things, either.
The Downie call, on replay, I felt was wrong. He hit shoulder, and Boychuk’s head hit awkwardly, but he followed through with his elbow high, which is what probably did it.
Anyway, I really don’t expect the Bruins to win game 6. They can. They might. They probably won’t. Three of the 5 games have had the team that scored first go on to lose, which just shows how resilient both teams are.

Tampa was called for a penalty that was less obvious than a few things Boston did

Sure, if the refs were calling ‘all penalties’ than the Bolts would have been called for a couple more. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that Boston got away with three extremely clear penalties while the refs calling something lesser on the Bolts.

And Boston’s PP sucks. It’s sucked all postseason. I think they have 5 goals for the entirety of it. They’re not winning any games up or down a man. They’ll win if they play 5-on-5.

Boston fans watching live had to be tearing their hair out after the first period. Bolts outshot them 14-4 and had three power plays. it’s hard as a Lightning fan to look back at what could’ve been there in the first. 2-0 or 3-0 would not have been unreasonable
