2011 Eastern Conference Finals: Tampa Bay Lightning (5) vs. Boston Bruins (3)
For so long, it seemed outright inevitable: Boston may have been back in the pack in the early Eastern Conference standings, but that was with thanks to the lack of games-played compared to Philadelphia, Washington, and Pittsburgh. Point-production wise? Boston was a juggernaut, but a juggernaut that started the season in Europe and therefore had a slow October and November.
Oh, and a juggernaut with the tandem of Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask as their goaltenders. Harsh. And formidable.
But as the season progressed, the Bruins caught up games-wise with the rest of the Eastern Conference and didn't keep the same pace with the other conference teams. Heck, the Montreal Canadiens nearly caught them in the Northeast Divisions standings before the Bruins pulled away and finished the season with 103 points.
The same point total as the Tampa Bay Lightning. And the ultimately the same record as well
But this is the second season. I've made it a point time and again to remind readers that seasonal (and series) accomplishments are moot at this point. Past tense. In the books. History.
Still, I'm not quite comfortable knowing the Lightning are shipping up to Boston. Not with the Bolts all time record of 4-22-3 with 6 ties in Beantown. Not with the team's 1-3 record against them in 2010-11, including the Boston Massacre in December, where Mike Smith and former Lightning goaltender Dan Ellis couldn't figure out what a puck was, let alone stop a shot on goal.
But here-in lies proof that this is the second season, and the previous games mean next to nothing: Dan Ellis and Mike Smith are no longer the starting tandem for the Bolts. This is Dwayne Roloson's show now.
And you know how he's played in the postseason sus-far: Like a bitter old man, beating kids off his lawn time and again.
But with the notion Dwayne Roloson has had a better goals-against average and a better save percentage than Tim Thomas during the playoffs, brings us back to statistical truth: We're back at square-one, again. The 41-year-old Roloson and the 37-year-old Thomas come into the series with a 0-0 record, a 0.00 GAA, and a .000 save percentage with 0 shots faced in 0 games.
What we can take into the next round is the fact three concussed players are noteworthy stories of the moment: Lightning LW Simon Gagne is expected to play in Game 1 (which will be either Thursday or Saturday, from what the team is expecting). Defenseman Pavel Kubina? Not so likely a start. The Boston Bruins leading scorer through the playoffs, Patrice Bergeron, is also out of action.
Gagne skated with the Bolts this morning, wearing the no-contact red-jersey. Forward Steve Downie and defenseman Randy Jones are also hurting (both presumably having issues with their ankles) but did skate on Monday. Unless something happens between now and Thursday / Saturday, both will likely be in the lineup for the series start.
The beginning of the Finals may still be in limbo, but news that Lightning fans should be interested in: Single Game playoff tickets for games 3, 4, and 6 begin Friday (tickets are already appearing on various re-sale networks). We'll have the press release from the team later this afternoon If you have the means of getting to Boston, or perhaps you are already up there, tickets for games at TD Garden have already been put on sale by the Bruins.

So is Mike Smith the backup goalie, then?

yes
although we have not seen him thus far in the playoffs, even when we played on back-to-back nights

Sort of an Alex Auld type? Okay then.

Of course we manage to play Boston
the week that I’m home visiting the family in Tennessee. We’ll see if I can get back up there late in the series.
Tim Thomas frightens me, as does our historical record in Boston. But the Caps did too. At this point, nothing will surprise me. Except our team giving up. That ain’t happening.

The Bolts and B’s only played one time after the New Year began, a 2-1 loss at the Garden aided by a fortuitous puck bounce off a ref’s skate that set up the winning goal with a little under four minutes left. There was also no Vinny in that game.
Then again, Mike Smith started, so that limits the significance of using that game as a measuring stick. I picked Boston to win the Eastern Conference heading into the playoffs, and to this point, they’re right on track. The only difference is that they’ll be going through Tampa, not Washington.
It’s amazing to think that the Bolts would have to go through the B’s or the Flyers to win the Eastern Conference, if they managed to pull the upset of Washington. For everyone who posts on this blog, everything always seems to have to go through either Boston or Philly, in any sport. I guess this is only fitting.

That’s awesome.
"They are uncanny. When they want to get a goal, it's like they just snap their fingers or hit a button. They just dial it up. You can see it. It's like they flip a switch. When they are down, it's just like they think, 'we know we are going to score.' I don't know what it is, it leaves you flabbergasted." - Mike Knuble, 3 May 2011
Boston fans seem a bit cocky (as per their fan blogs)
And that’s a good sign. The hubris on Pens and Caps blogs heading into their series with the Bolts were equally arrogant. The playoffs tend to hinge on special teams, goaltending, and coaching. We have the clear advantage in two of those areas (special teams and coaching – yeah, julien is a complete mental midget in pressure situations) and Roloson is playing on Timmy “Jesus” Thomas’ level these days, so who knows what happens on the ice…The Bs’ home ice advantage makes things tough, but I think we can still win in 6 or 7.
I wouldn’t say cocky, if last year taught a Bruins fan anything, it was that anything can happen in the playoffs before you get that 4th win!
Confident maybe, after a dominating second round, but not cocky!
I certainly expect it to be a hard fought and intense series and I to could see it going 6 or seven games!

we both had a dominant second round against a good team
so neither of us should underestimate the opponent.

I agree. Its the Conference Finals! Guy can try to play the nobody expects us to win line but I don’t think the Bruins will buy it! You don’t sneak into the final four!

I think vlac and I
were both just taken a little aback by the article on SCOC saying that the Lightning are a fringe playoff team that is vastly worse than their record indicates. Y’all have reason to be confident in that we don’t have a good historical road record in Boston, but we’ve both dominated some good clubs to get here.

I’ll be willing to bet that won’t be the last thing written over there that grabs you by your short hairs! And the regular season doesn’t matter anymore, The Canadiens had thier way with the Bruins most of the year and the first two games of round 1, yet they golf now or burn cars or whatever it is they do in the summer!
by SkateHitShoot on May 9, 2011 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions
given that Boston has had our number in the regular season
I’m glad it doesn’t matter anymore. I’m expecting a hell of a series though.

it’s the conference finals. It damn well better be.

true, but we did expect more from the conference semis
still, I think both of these teams have more mental fortitude than Washington, and Philly was in a massive slump. I expect to finally win one in Boston and probably drop one at home. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t go to at least six, but my tentative projection is Boston in 7.

I rather enjoyed the conference semifinals, actually.

Both teams have had to endure scheduling debacles in the playoffs so far (although you could argue that Tampa’s been worse off). Yet both teams were able to close out a series on the tail ends of back-to-back situations. As atrocious as the scheduling has been this year, I don’t think it will phase either team at this point.

Oh I know the teams will be fine, its those extra days off that make me crazy once the series starts!

Disney is Thursday, 5/19 – Sunday, 5/22. If they’d get started this Thursday, the Tampa games could be on Sunday – Wednesday. So it could go Thursday and Saturday in Boston, Monday and Wednesday in Tampa. Then a Game 5 in Boston on Friday and a Game 6 on Monday (both if necessary).

On the “glass is half full” side of things, Tampa is due.
When you look at the statistics that John posted it may mean that this is the opportunity where Tampa breaks out of that prior mold and establishes themselves. Things are different now and I’m hoping to see a great series.
I’m a bit disappointed with the scheduling. Waiting on the Western Conference to wrap up is boring. Wish we got started tomorrow instead of later in the week, don’t like long breaks in the playoffs.

I don’t mind it so much. It reminds me of the playoffs 2008-2010, when we had to watch without the benefit of our favorite team, and had to garner entertainment as pure hockey fans.
Both the Detroit/SJ and Nashville/Vancouver series have been great. And it’s not like the “rust” factor will sway the Eastern Final in another teams favor – both the Bolts and B’s swept and will have been waiting for almost a week now.
