Any is good for me, all I need is enough notice so I can request a couple of days vacation. One for the trip and one for the day after to recover.

the options are opening night (Friday 10/7)
Tuesday 11/1, and Saturday 3/3. I can hit all of them, although the latter two are better. I think Cassie will have an easier time with the weekend.

Sat 3/3 sounds good to me. I imagine it would work better for Cassie, but because my “weekends” shift around every 4 weeks, I have no idea what days off I’ll have then. So I’ll just requests vacation at the first of the year. If it turns out I’m already off, no harm done.

although right now, I’m more stoked about opening night. it’ll only be my 2nd NHL game ever, and it just so happens that the first game of the season is my favorite team visiting my (new) hometown team? so awesome.

good player, well priced
contract may be a hair long, but it’s my understanding that hockey players staying strong into their mid-30s is kinda the norm. It finishes around his 36th birthday, so that’s not too bad, is it? overall, I like the move. he was a huge (early) start to upgrading the defense

I understand that I haven't followed hockey too intensely in the past
and don’t know a lot of things, but why does Edmonton want a 35 year old guy (even if he played there before)? Do they really think they’re going to win soon? Shouldn’t they be looking at youth. . . or at least not age?

Nalley’s is a Northwestern thing – they do condiments, chili, chips, pickles, etc. They were out of Tacoma, originally, but I’ve read they’re moving their food plant out to the Midwest. Next stop…WORLD DOMINATION. :o)

The Philly newspapers
are buzzing with this rumored moved for Stamkos. Apparently Holmgren wants to bring in a franchise guy and might be willing to part with Giroux AND JVR for Stammer.
The disconnect between Stamkos’/Yzerman’s rhetoric on contract discussions and apparent progress is troubling. I’m worried we’re at an impasse that neither side wants to acknowledge…

I thought you were being serious in that question. I retract my comment. Major apologies. I was being a douchebag.
As for why no arb, maybe it’s because Stammer and Yzerman are actually close, just like they’ve been telling the media. And even if they aren’t, there is still a week before July 1st. Plenty of time to make a deal or go to arb if necessary. JM said himself that he was busy with things besides Stamkos. And Brewer (same agent as Stammer) said he would be very surprised if Stammer didn’t resign before July 1st.

Yes, he’s been quite confident about the deal for over a month. I think you have to take player media quotes, in contract negotiations, with a grain of salt. I still think he ultimately signs with the Lightning, but I’d like for the team to get a fair price. Things will likely get ugly if nothing is done by July 1st.

That’s an awfully sentimental thought. The Leafs are his childhood team…We can all come up with compelling narratives, but it’ll ultimately come down to dollars and cents. I still think we’ll get him, though I’m surprised at how calm the fan base is right now. Can you imagine if it came down to this for Crosby or Ovechkin?

I have known Chad (who runs the feed) online since 1999. One of the best hockey minds and one of the best guys you can find out there. One of the best Lightning fans.

So I got into a couple of arguments with people earlier today about this, so I thought I’d ask here. Do you think that a team’s legacy (name, banners, trophies, records, etc.) are owned by the city they play in, or by the franchise itself even after they move? Any thoughts?

They are owned by the Franchise unless the franchise elects to change for the city. I mean, the St. Louis Rams taking the LA Rams legacy means they didn’t shed it. The Indianapoilis Colts taking the Baltimore Colts heritage is another example.
But the NHL changes are usually very VERY profound. So, seeing the Avs honor the Nordiques traditions would seem odd. Though I could see Dallas holding fast to the North Stars history because their change in idenity doesn’t seem so profound.

If they went as the Kansas City Islanders, they could. If they became the Kansas City Scouts, then no.
People would mentally take their heritage with them, but in time – their legacy / history would fade.

I don’t think this “Jets” franchise has a right to retire Selanne’s number. He never played for this franchise. Only in the city. Distinct difference, at least to me.

I really think the only exceptions are if it’s understood that the city being abandoned will get a continuation franchise, which—to my knowledge—has only happened in the Browns/Ravens case

I think the franchise not taking the history is a rarity
you’ll note in my link below that Art Modell leaving the Browns history in Cleveland was only the result of a major outcry, and I haven’t really heard of any other “you can keep your history and we’ll link it up to a new team” agreements in any other context

Two: Didn’t say that a team won’t come into the East, jsut that the SE division would no longer exist. It opens things up so that a logistically irrelevant team does not get forced into a regional division.

Canadians generally tend to be of the opinion that religion’s a private matter that shouldn’t be aired in mixed company. So anything overly religious tends to make them uncomfortable, since they consider that to be the rudest form of bad manners. The Northwest tends to be that way as well, despite being fairly religious – you just don’t talk about it outside of family, close friends, and the people you go to church with. You just don’t, unless you want to offend people.

I moved to Tallahassee, and that’s all people talked about. I was completely appalled by that, since it’s the worst form of bad manners where I come from. I completely hated it there because of that. I was totally uncomfortable with it.

there was a USA/Panama rematch a couple days ago that the US actually won.
And USA/Mexico is our biggest rivalry. This is the third time in a row that it’s been the championship match of the Gold Cup (USA won in ’07, Mexico in ’09)

the rematch came in the semifinals
USA won 1-0. Freddy Adu made his first appearance in two years and sent in a nice ball to Donovan, who passed it through the defender’s legs to Dempsey on the back post. ’twas lovely. Panama played admirably though.
Mexico won the other semi against Honduras 2-0 in OT. so it should be a good one tomorrow.
