Lightning send qualifying offers to players

The Tampa Bay Lightning have issued qualifying offers to some of their upcoming restricted free agents.  Some surprising names are on the list of those that did not receive offers from the team too.

The following players have received qualifying offers from the team: Forwards Steven Stamkos, Teddy Purcell, Johan Harju, Riku Helenius, and Marc-Antoine Pouliot and Scott Jackson.  Yes, Pouliot was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes, but he had to be qualified before.

There were some surprising names on the list of those that did not receive qualifying offers as well, including Mike Lundin, Matt Smaby (maybe not so surprising there) and Vladmir Mihalik.  Also not receiving a qualifying offer were Alex Berry, Stefano Giliati, Levi Nelson, Kevin Quick and Paul Szczechura (aka "Chewy").

According to Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune, the Lightning can still sign Mike Lundin to a contract before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on Friday, July 1.

Qualifying offers must be 10 percent more than the player's previous season salary if he made less than $660,000.  The offer has to be five percent above the previous season salary if he made over $660,000. The offer has to be equal to the previous year's salary if the player made over $1 million.

More details to come, but this is what we have for now.  Are there any surprises on the list for you, dear readers?  Feel free to discuss it amongst yourselves.

Somewhat surprised

I wondered if Yzerman didn’t want to necessarily give a raise to Lundin or Smaby. With the lack of NHL ready defensive prospects in our system, you’d think he want to at least sign them to a 2 way deal. I’m guessing we’ll see Bergeron, Gervais and Jones as the Bolts 6-8 d then.

I’m not surprised Smaby didn’t get one. He’s not a puck-moving defenseman, and he doesn’t really fit into the style of play that Boucher’s devised. He was a healthy scratch an awful lot, which tells me that he’s not coming back. Lundin probably will, tho.

Win or lose, I'm proud of these guys.

Also remember that Matt proved brittle too often. He’d be sent downt o the AHL and get hurt, he’d play at the NHL level and get hurt. It was a repeat thing since 2009…

Mihalik not getting qualified surprised me a bit. He doesn’t fit the system, but they do still need warm bodies in the AHL. He becomes another failure of Jay Feaster’s high draft picks. Smaby too.

Typing is an adventure, and reading should be, too!

I missed one also...

on the list of players sent qualifying offers, add the name of the newest addition to the Lightning blue line, Bruno Gervais.

I'm stunned.

Stunned. No other words for it.

I did not see Lundin not getting a qualifying offer. He was quietly solid during the season, and played well enough in the playoffs (though was the victim of a couple bad bounces and one spectacular deke by Tyler Seguin.) I’ll still wear my road Lundin jersey with pride, though.

The other non-offers aren’t really surprises—especially Mihalik. After seeing Mihalik in person in Norfolk, I wonder why the man was drafted in the first round. Size only, apparently. I hope the best for him—maybe he’ll be a late bloomer like Chara.

"[The Lightning] are uncanny. When they want to get a goal, it's like they just snap their fingers or hit a button. They just dial it up. You can see it. It's like they flip a switch. No so sure I'd worry about Lundin

From what I’ve read, it’s still likely that he’ll resign with the Lightning before the free agent period starts.

Still a huge gamble

With no qualifying offer, there wouldn’t be any compensation coming back to the Bolts—or any right to match.

I wasn’t impressed with any of the defensemen in Norfolk, to be honest. Mihalik blended into the background whenever I was there. But I’m sure that Lundin will be re-signed. Hope so, anyways.

Gudas? Milam?

I thought both of them were quite good, considering it was their first year.

Gudas is a bit young still, I think. He did alright, but he wasn’t outstanding. Milam…I don’t remember noticing at all.

There’s no doubt Gudas is young—but he was drafted only last year, so I think he deserves some credit. :-)

Milam is an OFD, right point on the PP, if I remember correctly.

I didn’t mean to imply that, either. He’s a couple of years away from full-time duty, though he could be ready for call-ups next year.

Honestly, I don’t even know that I’d go that far. I like Gudas; I think he shows a lot of promise. But I don’t know that he’d do well at the NHL level for more than a game.

Qualifying offers aren't deadlined yet

5pm today is the deadline, according to Section 10.2(ii) of the CBA. In other words, there may be more coming. Maybe.

Stamkos got a qualifier?

Yeah, in all seriousness the only shocker is Lundin, but he could still be qualified later in the hour/signed later in the week.

Erik Erlendsson
Steve Yzerman said Lundin was not QO’s because arbitration award could potentially be too large; still has interest in bringing him back

I for one expect to see Lundin in a Tampa uni next season.

I want to personally apologize for the comments I made in the thread the other day. I felt really bad bashing a fellow Bolts fan like that. So, I’m sorry. Won’t happen again. Maybe it’s just because I’m as paranoid as you are.

Though seriously, try not to lose sleep over it. Just go over the facts in your mind; it adds up to Stammer probably staying here.

I’m worried that he cares more about money than we’d like to believe. The powers that be will have to take him to arbitration before July 1st as they can’t/shouldn’t risk some team coming out of nowhere with a 10 year 100 million offer sheet….Stevie Y would be forced to match (as he’s publicly said he would) and that kind of contract would be absolutely crippling.

BE REASONABLE, STEVEN!

by vlac4 on Jun 28, 2011 7:33 AM EDT up reply actions

God, I just realized he’s not even eligible for arb since he’s only played 3 years. This isn’t good. We’re likely either overpaying or losing him if this goes past July 1st.

by vlac4 on Jun 28, 2011 9:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Seriously, step away from the ledge. It’s going to be alright. It’s just a game, and he’s only one player on the team. A good player, certainly, but just one player. And he’s almost certainly going to stay. So take some deep breaths since it might still be a while. Geez. :o)

LOL.. But it would be kinda interesting at that, to see where the “average” hockey fan is from and what they are like. Always wondered about that….

Not sure if I’m going to post them or not just yet. John seems to think that 40-50 quesions is an awful lot – and it is. Kinda.

Interesting tact

I guess Julien Brisebois and Steve Yzerman will be busy trying to get some experienced defensemen for Norfolk, otherwise our injury callups would be Vernace, Jackson, Barberio or Gudas. Troy Milam and Kevin Quick are on AHL contracts.

BTW, one could argue if Mihalik actually played defense. I would best describe his play as simply “taking up room on the ice 3 square feet at a time.”

the moves that arent being made are as noticeable as the ones that are. its about the big picture and the future, smaby was as helpful as ellis, after he was traded. its not about today or tomorrow but years, one has to retrain their thinking to one of beyond this season. its the forward thinking of this administration that we are not accustomed. everything is done deliberately and thoughtfully

True

But it’s also a natural reaction by fans to despise the departure of players they like and to whose presence on the roster they’ve grown accustomed. Your underlying point is very poignant, though—the leadership team of this hockey club has a firm grasp on what needs to be done to help them get better as a team.

It’s quite possible a lot of these Norfolk-based players could end up signing contracts with the Admirals, because I don’t think many have the overall skill to get other NHL contracts (Nelson, Mihalik).

Because they’re a team of their own right, the Ads can sign players to contracts not affiliated with the Lightning. Still wouldn’t make them available as Lightning call-ups, but would help out the Ads nevertheless.
