2011 NHL free agency open thread

The free agent season for the National Hockey League begins at Noon EDT today. Everything and nothing will happen within the first several hours of free agency. There will be so much of so little going on that we, the fans, will salivate (or laugh derisively) over every rumor and every free agent signing by all 30 NHL clubs.
It compares to Christmas in that not only will there be gifts for teams fans, but there will be let downs ("That's not what I wanted!") and this last saturation of hockey will have to last you for months on end (until training camps open, to be more precise).
Of course, this is Raw Charge and the focus for Tampa Bay Lightning fans is on Steven Stamkos, and seeing what Steve Yzerman, the Jedi Master and General Manager, cooks up for an encore to his well received first season as GM of the Bolts.
With whatever happens, and whatever is forthcoming, this is your open thread for discussion of the days events from across the NHL. Chat as you please about the future of Brad Richards, Tomas Vokoun, and the rest of the 2011 NHL free agency class.

Anyone would “suck” for that price. When you pay what they paid for Kessel you expect 50 goal seasons and a guy who is literally unstoppable. No one can live up to all of that pressure.

This year’s FA crop is so thin it’s going to be like that. Especially with a number of teams that are going to have to add a lot of salary to get to the cap floor.

Justin Goldman on Garon for those interested
One of the more talented and effective “backups” available, Garon should fetch some decent offers. I think he makes a great fit in Colorado. Since he only made around $1.2 million last season, he fits the mold of cost-efficient goalie with experience and upside.

To all who doubt Stamkos’ return, please remember last season Yzerman deliberately offered contracts to provide the most cap space possible to re-sign Stamkos. All teams with a few exceptions do not have the cap space required for anoffer sheet. Worry not, people of Bolts Nation.
Personally I’m more concerned/nervous about Lundin not returning and who will back up Roli.

A few people are, but most of us aren’t. The owner’s willing to spend up to the cap ceiling, and Yzerman’s said he’s going to match any offer sheets – tho, it looks like he’s scared teams away from writing any up. So, it’s really just a wait & see sort of deal. At least it is for me.

I’m awfully ambivalent about Vokoun. On the one hand, he was my first goalie, so that counts for something (Vokouuuun!) but on the other hand I’ve always gotten the impression that he’s pretty much a me-first kind of guy, sooo…that’s sorta sucky.

Versteeg and Upshall are 3rd line players, not worth what they will be making. Same with Kopecky.

Expanding on Rob’s Entry Level contracts are CBA controlled, so noone is going to have a huge cap hit for their first 3 years., esp considering the kittenhawks are catching up to the floor, still have all that cap space above the floor too :)
(expanding a bit further, Tallon is the draft Junior and keep in Junior type, see Gudrbandson and Connely from our side) so thats 4 years of no or low caps space for those guys.
Gudbransons contract is in the works and its looking to be a max ELC.. 3+mil cap hit
